J.C. Deacon explains the two ‘very distinct sides’ of Alejandro Tosti | Golf Central | Golf Channel
https://www.youtube.com/golfchannel?sub_confirmation=1

Golf Central on YouTube is brought to you by the Paradigm AI smoke woods and irons from Callaway Alejandro toasty proving today that he packs a punch long putt here at the 12th on his way to 68 and he is one of five tied for the lead at the Texas Children’s Houston

Open arve with a rep as a passionate player at times a bit of a powder keg by his own Mission impatient had some run-ins last year in the corn Ferry tour 32 putts today we’ll see how he holds up in just his 12th start on the PGA tour Alejandro grew up in Argentina

Watching the Masters at the age of six he grabbed the stick they used to move the charcoal under the grill that was his club and he’d hit an underarm deodorant ball said he broke a lot of glasses but everything smelled good with that deodorant ball as he got older he

Would walk seven blocks through the city of Rosario Northwest of Buenos SAR he’s hop on a bus ride an hour to the golf course just to practice I first saw him at the Latin ant infectious personality obvious natural Talent uh he missed a short putt late in the inaugural

Allowing Matias Dominguez you saw him there at teeth of the dog to win it cost Alejandro Master’s invitation he went on to play at the University of Florida First Team all America 2017 Southeast Conference individual champion under coach JC Deacon this guy has a world of

Ability and joining us now is the man who coached Alejandro at the University of Florida JC Deacon JC thanks for being with us so when you saw that Alejandra was going to be paired with big Tony feno for this third round what’ you think um well I know he’s ready for the

Stage for sure um his game can can hang with anyone but uh you know you just never know with Ally it’s it’s always going to be entertaining with it with his golf and um and his emotions but uh I’m excited for him he’s been dreaming of this forever and um there’s just no

Doubt in the world he’s he’s ready to play with the best so JC you you were not surprised uh that he kind of stood up to Tony on the putting greet at number four and and why yeah I I didn’t see the incident we’re we’re actually down at kaloa Pines

And Naples on little team practice trip but uh I told the guys at the table they were they were asking me before the round you know how’s he going to do how’s he going to hang in there and I said I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s leading after the round and and In

Contention on Sunday because um Alejandro is not scared of anyone he’s just not when you get in between the ropes and everyone hits their first shot um he wants to beat you and he probably wants to beat you more than anyone’s ever wanted to beat you before and it’s

A war out there for him and I think that rubs rub rub some people the wrong way and um you know maybe that came out a little bit today but he’s a he’s a fierce competitor and he’s not going to give you anything and he’s going to try

And you know do whatever he can to win chip on his shoulder uh you and I have spoken before in part because of where he came from in Argentina what can you tell us about his background growing up in Rosario yeah I I don’t Alli didn’t come

For much and I think his family and and him had to fight for for everything they had and Alli was surrounded by a lot of poverty at times and um it’s been amazing watching him every time he he’d fly back to Argentina he’d asked me for

Uh anything we could come up with old golf balls old clubs shirts and you know shoes and I’d always ask him like man No One’s Gonna want those those are old theyve you know someone’s worn those shoes 50 times and he said coach you have no idea someone’s gonna think this

Is the greatest thing they’ve ever had so um he he grew up differently um I don’t think maybe learned um some of the some of the more finer points in in the etiquette side of the game that he’s had to pick up while he’s gotten over here

And um Alli just he knows how to fight he knows how to compete and he believes in his game and himself and uh you know I think the world’s going to start to to learn that pretty quickly here how do you explain coach some of those disciplinary issues that he had on the

Corn fery tour last year yeah he you know allly gets into his own world on the the golf course and uh I think you know he’s he’s focused on himself and and maybe doesn’t think about those around him as as much as we would have liked or or some other people

Would have liked and um I think you know that in time you know he’s going to grow up and GNA be forced to mature and uh you know we have such a great game and I think what what we all love about the game so much is is the respect we have

For its past and its history and and for our playing partners and everyone having an equal opportunity to win um I think he’s learning it the hard way and uh learning it slowly I I remember I’ve looked back at some pictures of myself I had some very dark hair when

Ally got to got to college and it’s very gray now and he’s responsible for a few of those you had coffee with Ally just before he went out to Hawaii earlier this year for the tournament out there what’ you tell him yeah we sat down at at mppa his favorite favorite restaurant

In in Gainesville and and I just reminded him um you know that the PGA Tour and and the corn fairy tour is about the players in my opinion and um you know he’s going to have to find a way to get along with the guys and to

For them to be able to you know maybe not enjoy a round but be able to play their own game and be able to compete uh while he’s there and he can’t be a distraction U that’s just not fair to um the other guys and the tour in general

And uh he he understood that but at the same time um he said coach I’m I’m not out here to make friends and I’m out here to win and and to be the best I can be and um he meant it when he said that how big is his

Talent uh he’s the best player i’ I’ve ever seen it’s uh it’s video game like when he’s on he can control his ball that well um he moves at Miles and he’s only 5′ six coach how how does he generate that power uh wonderful technique uh he’s he’s just phenomenal he’s actually

Really really strong too and um it’s funny I remember one of the first stories with toasty we’re we were hitting a a lob wedge of all clubs and you know I said uh toasty how far you know would would your max be with that lob wedge and he turned around and

Looked at me and said coach I can hit this as far as I want and uh so he’s he’s got a lot of power a lot of uh a lot of skill and and I’m we’re all super excited to see how it uh how it unfolds tomorrow on the big stage I’ve known

Ally uh since the inaugural Latin America amateur championship we just showed that highlight he finished second there uh there’s a sweetness to Alejandro tosy you he has that as I said before the sevy energy I think a little combative and and I actually think you know people are thirsting for a little

Bit of that in this this era of of so many good guys uh but again there is a sweetness to Alejandro beneath that is that how you’ve gotten to to know him through the years coach yeah he’s a fascinating young man because if if you don’t threaten what he’s trying to do

Which is Win golf tournaments whether you know whether that’s kids or older people he is i’ I’ve had a lot of people in Gainesville tell me he’s the nicest player that they’ve ever met on any of our teams ever and uh he will he will charm young people and old people but if

If you’re a competitor of his and and threaten what he’s trying to do he has an ability to shut that off and uh he he’s not going to be very friendly um between the lines and he’s made that very clear he’s not out there to make any friends he’s he’s out there

To take care of business and uh um there’s there’s two very distinct sides to him and and I guess you know not a lot of people get to see that sweet side you’re talking to coach you have this reporter suitably fired up for the final round uh to watch the uh the Argentine

Out of the University of Florida Coach JC Deacon such a good Pro prog thanks coach for jumping on with us we appreciate it thanks Rich best of luck to toasty tomorrow yeah the toaster as we like to call him he was popping today that’s for sure and he’s nine under one

Of five players tied at the Texas Children’s Houston open fascinating character he’s right in the thick of it in Texas

  1. I know a thing or two about fiery Argentinians. And I know Even Mr Bobby jones himself had to learn a hard lesson or two through golf.

Like Mr Jones Argentinians can be charmers and like Mr jones can lose some of that charm during competition.

Life in Argentina is tough, which makes guys like this fighters. Argentina is also half of arguably the greatest rivalry in sports: of course that’s Argentina/Brazil in futbol (soccer).

Both play beautiful soccer. Both have amazing passion. But Argentina especially breeds kids that breathe fire thanks to this rivalry.

I do hope he can tone it down just enough as rahm and Bryson and others have been able to do; so more people can appreciate his
    Talent and success.

The overly fiery ones eventually realize it’s not fun when their behavior leads to a bunch of people not happy they won —mind you in a sport we root for everyone. So they tone it down and it often helps their game as well as their brand.

Fire is necessary imo, but too much of anything is never a good thing.

  2. Probably cost me 22K. There was a temporary bad line for end of round leader at a sportsbook….Finau was paying 4-1 when he should have been even money. Finau imploded and now I read about this goon who was arguing with him from the start of the round. Unreal.

  3. I think Tosti was not contesting who was in or out, where the second putter has an advantage of seeing the first putt's line. I think he was correctly pointing out he'd have to step on (or at least near) Finau's intended line when taking his stance if he, Tosti, putted first. Tosti is great fun to watch, has a great story–and is considerate.
