Michael Brennan did it in ‘ 9294 on AER you know I did it on Nick Davis and sco did it on deoy and jeez we were pumping ourselves up like it was fighting it wasn’t it wasn’t a mallet he had the team on his shoulders in 20201 what was
The chat like after in the CH rooms I assume everyone’s like what the [ __ ] just happened I remember this clearly you never lose two in a row it’s an interesting spot to be in the middle of the EMP said J 100,000 people this is what you trained your entire life for
You know this is the moment this is what you enjoy y giving me a little [ __ ] probably would never see that again these [Applause] days ladies and gentlemen welcome to back chap here by P wise for season 2024 uh the man sitting with us today one of the alltime Legends in West Coast
History I believe and you’re about to find out why Drew Banfield joins us hello mate how are you drew yeah thanks to be being here thanks [ __ ] thanks Dan good to see you fresh out of the port to Pub I’m swimming with sharks you you survived that okay mate mate that was a
Good stitch up by you boys you threw me in the water no one gave me the heads up there was a nice little potential Hammerhead down there but um I don’t know if we would have done anything different would we just a little just a
Little context for this one I know I ask the same question every time so uh we did the port to Pub in the weekend I’ve come out of the water boow up next to said you see the three men Hammerhead swimming around below us circling I said
No get me out of the water meanwhile Drew is in the Water Swimming it was one of those ones where everyone looked around with you know that you could see the whites of the eyes people were like [ __ ] what do we do no no one really told
Drew and then when Drew got out of the water we didn’t speak about it again it wasn’t until we were sitting there at the at the um I think we were on the boat in Thompson Bay aers all of a sudden the shark got brought up had no
Idea what they were talking about well you here are you that’s right right so there’s no chance you would have been swimming though if they told you there was a shark in there right I for I reckon he might have I think we would have been right swim with fist now
Banners we ask the same question to every guest that comes in here um we know you’re number one draft pick we know you’re a two-time Premiership player uh best and fairest winner your list goes on at the West Coast we know we know you can play footy
Congratulations but uh I do want to ask your greatest sporting achievement not on the football field right so we know you can do all those footy things you’re you’re Trojan warhorse Dan here for instance yep uh five for 16 in a grand final under 12’s Cricket Bing some
Tweakers some off Spinners I was under n hoodles state champion um jumping over some a couple of 30 cm rulers won the state champs doing that beach Flags champ so it wasn’t when you beat Aon Sunland we can talk about that if you’d lie 50 m race I had a 10-second Head
Start now greatest sporting achievement not in the football field can you take us somewhere you can go back to school you can you can be in the pool you can you can be um you can take us wherever you like um mate you’ve um thrown me on
The spot I don’t know if I played many other sports other than football I I did swim um I do vaguely remember going to the York pool and uh taking on the uh country all stars in a 50m swimming event really and um I got the chocolates
By a touch and um the York pool and what’s the next body of water from your your pool oh it’s not too far from the quering pool mate but uh that’s very good so you’re you’re a swimmer I I well used to be I used to be
Yeah very good I like that and you swam SW the port PB that’s no that’s no you know you did it too it’s pretty good feature I just swam aotto with five other people yes that’s fine yeah that’s Drew banfield’s greatest sporting achievement thanks to tab touch this
Season Drew let’s get into it uh quering boy what’s life like growing up for Drew Banfield um sporting family you play footy what what’s it like yeah look very sporting family uh older brother younger sister all invol enjoyed sport I guess that sort of stemmed from the uh parents
Um the old man uh he they had the farm out in quering he played a bit of footy for East Perth and then basically played um Eastern District’s football uh a lot with the uh langon brothers so that was Don langon and Winton and um so that’s
Carl lon’s dad right um all out at Eastern District sholden um and um yeah he had a he had a you know wonderful career out there they had a lot of fun it sounds like and um and then the swimming mate you want to where the swimming came from it was actually from
My mom although she grew up in Norman she uh learned how to taught herself how to swim and um was a gun uh swimmer at St hilders and uh held the butterfly record for a number of years is that right wow hardest stroke the butterfly very difficult but if you master it you
You you absolutely dominate it yeah right so um a country country Lads they seem to play senior footy earlier was that the case you were you playing no pretty much uh no not at all cuz uh I got sent to boarding school um year year
Eight back then so um I was in boarding school I came back and played the occasional game but it was really just Cults level back at quering when we had enough um Team uh team members and also the country town we playing had enough team members we uh played in under sort
Of 18 sort of comp but I would have been you know 14 yeah right you know so um that yeah played bit of footy that in that regard now uh paywise powering the podcast uh a little bit of Flight Network in there as well do you remember
Your first car do you remember what you driver around color yeah yeah what was it it was a a green Isuzu Ute Isuzu it was called the hard rocking steel [Laughter] mobile that’s unreal so what sort of like a big sort of almost like a sa off
You chuck chuck all your tools in the back did your banners back then mate you could you could chuck your mat in the back yeah so um I don’t know it was just off the farm it was just a um a you little um you know manual Ute that uh I
Got to use for the first year or two and um then slowly upgraded from there what what did you end up getting with with you um started getting paid for footy yeah I ended up with a um uh Porche no no I I went down the fourwh drive line I
Got a Toyota um uh what are they called um sort of the Surfs you know the uh um the is like a pra but way smaller and nowhere near as good but uh looks good yeah but it looked good yeah did you did you surf much I know surfed a fair bit
As a um you know player on the west coast list but I can’t imagine the surf’s too good in quity M SC I took up surfing so late in life it was actually when um can you just say where quering is for National audience y so um quering is a
About an hour maybe 2hour Drive East straight east of Perth towards the middle of Australia yeah so you go through your head out to quering but our farm was another 30ks on the east side of quering so we weren’t anywhere near the town and or the coast or the coast
So um we weren’t far from shackelton so that was our closest town but we were in between quering and Kell Baron cuz I remember coming to the footy club and and you and fletchy and stinger and you’re all surfing I yeah well I didn’t surf because I went to cus islands with
Fletch and basically there was nothing to do there other than surf so I I learned surf it was about mid 20s or something like that so um was that one of the like said Fletch is a very good um Chad Fletcher was a very good Surfer
And you don’t know how to surf your country did he just push you onto a wave and said go I said let’s go out of here and um it was barreling the Milton who you got to know quite well over the DP Ash M he came
With us I think he did his hammy surfing so uh that that didn’t last long for him um while we’re on that I know we’re jumping all over the place here but so Ash McIntosh um nickname Milton and I and I’ve pretty much everyone just calls
Him Milton and I asked on the weekend where where did that come from can you tell that story how where Milton came from right so it it he got the name before I turned up so we’re talking 92 he’d already got this nickname and his nickname was Millie and um apparently at
Some stage there uh Mick um m m house Mick mol house um sort of uh assessed Ash’s game um of football to be very similar to a boy band called Millie vanil oh which was a Lip lip sing their own songs so he sort of said you’re like
That band Millie vanil you’re out there but no one’s really performing that’s good and well something along those lines so ever since that comment by Mick he got called Millie that’s one of the great Nick that is one of the great and and Milli L everyone just calls him Milton
Now it’s just Milton oh Jee brilliant What was the Millie vanil song was that one song we might have to find it but they weren’t singing it brilliant B MC mold house uh talking about West Coast Eagles you’re the number one draft pick now this is I think quite absurd West
Coast Eagles win the Premiership 1992 they then have the number one draft pick in 1993 they they traded a couple of picks away to get the number one draft pick which was you I know um probably if you look back at it if you were sitting in well where we are now
And you go oh my God they traded for number one you just don’t hear about that anymore um so yeah I was pretty you know fortunate in a way I got to stay in my home state um there was a few other clubs interested but um yeah I guess
What West Coast had one and seven that year so um I never really knew if they were going to uh use the number one pick um I think it was Adelaide and North Melbourne had picks in between one and seven so um that were the probably the
Two clubs that shown the most interest but you never really know on draft day so if they’re going to pick you up yeah and anyway so West Coast though um uh yeah decided that they’d use the number one pick and um yeah that’s how it all happened on the internet it says
West Coast pulled off the heist of the century when they convinced Sydney to give up the first pick in the draft so you could have been a Sydney Sydney player if they if they kept it yeah I think well back then Sydney was really chasing some matur um you know
Experienced players um that had been in the system for at least you know two or three four years and that’s what West Coast had they had a had a pretty good list in that sort of 91 92 era and um there was a couple decent players that
Obviously missed out on the 92 flag and um you know they they were looking to uh Chase Chase opportunities elsewhere so SC wat was one of the yeah Scotty Waters and uh Tony begovic yes yeah who was pick seven in in your if you’re one you said that yeah uh Paul Simmons Paul
Simmons could you imagine if um like Collingwood had number one pick this year people would just be outraged correct the AFL would crumble yeah but they would have had to trade for it true you know it all comes down to that you know I guess West Coast were in that
Position last year they didn’t they didn’t go for it good point but um you know if they did it would have been a you know something you yeah big deal yeah but it would always looked back at and um go what who won yeah you know so
Uh West Coast what’s it like walking on to the AFL this was the West Coast Eagles in ‘ 92 93 you jackovic McKenna Worf I know it’s pretty yeah so I watched the 92 Grand Final at the dunb pub and um you know with a heap of mates
And uh yeah next thing you know um you know it’s probably two weeks later I’m uh I’m down at uh Flor at beach doing my first preseason run along the beach up to OB City they had the sand runs going to that the sand runs
That was a big you know Brian Dawson was in charge and we’d hit the Flor at Beach and it was all action there and uh M there was none of that uh just ease the young BLS into it that uh that we see today you know that you maybe do two
Thirds to three three quarters of the session yeah we were in it was uh so M it was a rude awakening of how unfit I was you were a midfielder later in your career you saw the light and made you way back in the backline uh what what was that Midfield
Like and was there players at the club that took you under your wing their wing early m i yeah there was a great bunch of um midfielders that you know were happy to you know um help me out um there’s a huge list like I mean you know
Donnie Park was uh probably uh him and Dean Kemp were probably the two of the uh BLS that really helped me out Chris Lewis as well um Tony Evans um fatty lamb um oh man was you know pretty uh pretty good um as well so influential as
Well and and and not that I’m Drew bfield number one draft PE but I came to the footy Club at 07 after the 06 flag and you walk into a a successful environment right they’re they’re winners like did you get is that what you walked into like a winning winning
Culture absolutely I mean there the expectation was that you’d I remember this clearly you never lose two in a row like you know if we went down not a problem we’ll we know we’ll win the next one like it was actually nearly just understood no matter what we’re going to
Win the next one right and so and you sort of noticed that too also you know eventually you I had a big gap between um the successes and um in 06 probably the biggest one we had was that you um knew if it was a close game at 34 time
We’re going to win it like you know it was just knowing that you know no one was going to overrun us and um and that was a mentality they had in ’92 as well that um going into obviously 94 which was another successful year so people listening may think that’s normal but
You you’ve played a lot of teams and so I and anyone really that that um belief it’s not always there no no it’s and it’s you work up to it all of a sudden you don’t really know what’s upon you but it’s it’s just an expectation that
All of a sudden we’re we’re good enough here we we we don’t drop two in a row and you can see it right calling like calling wood over the last two years I know they didn’t win the grand final two years ago but they they’ be down by four
Goals and you could just say they’re just like well we’re going to win this anyway we’ll get the job done and they they most of the time would yeah and that’s exactly what um that side had it was a um very much a um a belief in each
Other as well as um you know obviously Mick had them steering in the right direction as well do you remember your first game or your first opportunity I had a I had an opportunity round one 1993 right I was emergency but you got to understand um I don’t reckon I was
Ever going to play cuz parents didn’t get the uh flight over or anything like that but I was also um living with my brother and neither of us really cooked that much um I was 18 he was 20 so we’re uh renting and um food was scarce or decent
Food so I’ve gone to Adelaide and uh you know what it’s like SC you’ve been you land and then you arrive at the hotel and next thing you know this smallest Board of food is just out there so I’ve just launched into this I’ve had about
Three or four meals in one knowing that it’ll get me through the rest of the week um on the on the night before the game and um you know I’m I’m rooming with um Donnie Pike right back then we don’t didn’t have our own rooms on did
You have your own rooms yeah we upgraded yeah yeah so we had to share back in the early ’90s and I was sharing with Donny Park and um the next morning breakfast is on walk down to breakfast and again I knew I wasn’t playing so I’ve just
Really um made myself at home loaded up loaded up there was bacon there was eggs like could have anything um pancakes anyway we go and do our um morning training session or just you know light run just around the um there was a park next door um the boys all we
I was doing it with them and they all heading back to the hotel and I get the old bannis come on we’ve got to do a bit extra and I went really okay no worries so uh Georgie young and Robbie Wy um take me through the Pacers and they took
Me through the paces and anyway I’ve turned white I’m can’t run out of sight they’re going what have we drafted here this kid can’t run and um I’ve headed back to the hotel just you know tail between the legs going what have I done I’ve just put my career on buddy and
Jeopardy and I’ve gone up to my room sat in the shower like this and next I vomited all over the floor you’re just in the in in our only bathroom in Parky and my um room so poor Donny’s about to face the um Adela crows in an hour or
Two and I’m just ruining his environment and dare to say I didn’t get another look for in for a while mate it took me a good 10 to 12 games at subo to um get the win win some um trust back in the team just imagine Mick mous in the old
School tracky arms crossed the stars bristling in the wind just going what is this this disgraceful do it You’ put 10 kilos on overnight I did oh and I left it all in the hoody bathroom at the Caron Crest in Adelaide or whatever it was called that’s very good um so when
Did you who did you play your first game against so I think I might have been round 14 I can’t remember 16 I knew it was an even number um MCG so I couldn’t ask for anything better playing endon at the MCG on a Saturday afternoon and um
I’m playing in the duts on Michael long and um you know he was on fire he’ just won the norm Smith in the oh no he went on to win the norm Smith in the 93 so he was in in good form worked him into a bit of form yeah
Exactly anyway I don’t remember I’ve got a couple of touches um I do remember my first kick uh nearly went through for a goal uh except for um Dustin Martin’s Gadget arms you remember yeah not Dustin Fletcher would he wouldn’t have reached it but Dustin Fletcher could and uh his arms have just
Extended extended and just marked this ball right on the line and you know they ran out the other side and um I missed a missed a goal on my first kick so you missed the first kick first goal club we we been to so many people on this poty
That first kick first goal we had by Dustin Martin I mean Dustin Fletcher you no other Defender would have got it no I tell you no want to we’re going to fish that out I reckon out of the out of the archives you’ll find that now Dan you’re a big jumper
Number guy here what number were you wearing in your first game oh 31 the number 31 I never knew that you were a part of the 31 Brotherhood yeah that’s so good one of those 31 all subie boys mate really I’m a p boy so did you get a
Choice or did you just get hand that was I lobed up there it was yeah they flicked it off last one here seven games what was wrong with 31 six came available and I got to move in with the Heavy Hitters down there in the low who
Who was s six was that uh it was Jeff miles and then Paul posos and then me W it’s disappointing you left the 31 you could have been a real I know everyone does their time in it and you either move on or stick around and probably did
You a favor he’s probably the most iconic six he could have you could have been under his shadow of 31 if if he stay at 31 another number thing so martinovski started 31 moved to six H that’s right tell you what so um that’s your first year play your first game get
Your experience play seven games that year can I just go a bit further with this first game great so really tight game okay um we we had some great um battles with essin and um basically about a I know I I I from memory it felt like the last kick of the
Day Paul salmon has marked the ball kick the goal and we go down by a couple of points right just you know the boys are shattered we can’t believe it anyway the coaches get a little bit excited and uh unbeknown to us Kevin shy is stormed out of the coach’s box and
Started waving his jacket above his head and it was the start of the essin Eagles rivalry of the jacket wave is that right your first game my first game so were you walking off the off the field after a lost disc G what is what on you would
Never seen a crowd ever 60 odd th000 or something like that their jackets around well no they that no yeah it only started from there because it hit the news like you know all during the week all you saw was Kevin Shey waving his jacket what was that over people giving
Him gra in front of him or something what was he so I think it was just the fact that he just beat his arch rival Mick mouse in a very heated big game at the MCG and um you played um you played under MC M house um Judy I’m assuming
Yep couple years with Judy and and then wer your former teammate yeah um you see some decent clips and sprays from out of those three did you ever receive any oh was I was pretty lucky with Mick I got on his good side got on his good side um
I didn’t get too many a couple of boys were on the end of a couple of lashings but um Judy Judy you know he was he he I think he enjoyed a spray like you know whether it was at individual person or at the whole team um that was just the
Way he sort of got got up and about and um and whoer was very no he he didn’t offer too many sprays he um you could tell when he was really angry though disappointed wasn’t he oh I remember one time at jalong and he made um Steve Woodhouse absolutely
You know put his pants that Steve’s just leaning against this door you know sort of listening to whoer and we’re all looking at him going yeah we’re paying back like you know jalong we we often don’t play that well in jalong never have no um unless you’re Matt PR’s debut
Yes and um anyway he’s belted this door right next to Steve’s um head who’s packed his Dack and and I reckon none of us really were listen well you know you go back and go what did whoer say no one really remembered other than seeing Steve Wood woodhouse’s face absolutely
Scared bu shitless and um anyway be on the receiving him from some wor spr down at kadini Park don’t wor he’s got the same handprints down there for fashion walls so no we we often CED it down there was that weird was that weird playing under a teammate like an next
Like a Premiership teammate was that weird for you or um that relationship no it was it was it was great it was easy um I guess you you know as a captain of the side you you knew that there was certain you know the expectations he
Always brought his his best to the to the team and um I guess that was you know I guess the way I felt you needed to play under him that you know he’ll bring his best you bring your best and we will make it all work sort of thing
And um yeah he never left a stone unturned as a player or a coach so you know it was it was pretty easy to um be coached by him going back to sort of 93 and and into ’94 do you remember the pressure of being number one pick was
That a big deal did you get treated differently by the club or anything yeah it probably was but I didn’t really um there was nowhere near the scrutiny of of what you see today like there was no stats out there um there was no combine
To go to to see how high or slow you could run um so you know I it was all done on um how you how you’ve played your footy like I played half a year at subiaco in ’92 uh played 10 lead games and um uh In fairness to that I had a
Pretty good State um seven Carnival the year before which probably put me on the radar um and um you know so expectations I guess there were some but I just you know knew it was going to be a challenge breaking into the 92 team um or the the
Premiership team from 92 so I just knew I had to buy my time and and and get to learn as much as I can off the guys that had um you know been in the system for four three four years so you tell me you weren’t on the back page of the paper
For three months straight is that is that right we had a few other characters that uh took the uh the Limelight back then you know Chrissy man wearing was always a good one that uh you know um found himself in both good and bad hot cold water so uh yeah yeah so um
C can you like Harley Reed number one draft pick West Coast I know you’re saying it’s different but can you I don’t know can you empathize it all with well can you I don’t know what what what do you say going on there you all I can
Say to um with that is you know obviously there’s so much external noise on Harley and you know he seems from from a distance handling it really really well but you know hopefully he’s got and a great close you of mates or or people that he he um values their
Opinion and listens to them and then don’t worry about the rest you know same with the you know the club will have you know you you he’ll build a relationship with coaches whether they’re assistant coaches or um you know development coaches and he’ll work on his game and
You know listen to them and you know hopefully we see the best of him yeah I agree well said 94 excuse me ‘ 94 uh seven games in that 93 and the ‘ 94 is a Premiership year play every game that year um and not find yourself in a
Premiership you’re playing a Premiership named on the bench What’s That season like um young young kids second youngest in the team that year do you know who the youngest was yeah bondie Shane Bond yeah yeah so what’s it what’s it like playing in a premise ship that young
With these with these Superstars mean you’re young young upand Comer then yeah um that 94 was a year I guess you know I got a second preseason under my belt you sort of finding you you’re you’re matching it a little bit better with with everyone else I had to build on my
Tank like you know playing Midfield then but there was no um not a lot of uh interchange rotations back in those days you sometimes I found myself playing for like the whole all all the minutes so you it was um a different style of
Footing yes and um and it was a lot of one-on-one sort of scenarios whereas you know we defended as a one one team um and beat your opponent whereas these days you’ve got your zones and you you um um you intercept Defenders that have a bit more license like gu McKenna did
That a lot really well for us uh throughout that 94 season but you know rest of them would probably you know know that they’re playing on an opponent you jackovic KY sort of scenarios you know they’re the sort of things that you know became part and parcel as I went
Got into my career and it was um yeah to make it and hold my my position that year was you know you know it was tough but you know it were rewarding in the end and um you know so so glad to be part of it what do you remember in that
Offseason obviously win 92 the West Coast wi 92 then get bounced in the finals 93 was there a bit of like a pissed off attitude like maybe a opportunity missed to come back in 94 and and prove something yeah totally I I reckon there there there would have been
In that great I’m I was emergency for a couple of the finals so I went to the G I was never really going to play and um you know we we played uh we lost I can’t remember if we went straight sets or we won one loss I honestly can’t remember
How we went in 93 but it was something that I sort of remember thinking that the team you know me being very young and early in my career I was sort of like oh this is pretty this is pretty cool you know but I think them as season campaigners they you know
They’d already played in ‘ 91 they won in Lost and played in ’92 they knew what they wanted and um it was an opportunity missed and I think that’s where 94 sort of um gathered its momentum early that backline jackovic Brennan Worf monkey Brennan um Ash yeah for heart and I know
You weren’t in the backline then but what was it like like to talk about back lines here on back man what what we’ve heard story from others that you know wish or respect especially that intimidation factor that that backline was a an aggressive backline was that
What it was like to play with I reckon they had just had a beautiful blend of of BLS that could could you know nullify stop and we’re talking Champions here like you know you the the fullbacks are playing on guys like duno and Lockett and um abet you know so you you you’re
Talking greats of the game and and that that set up a forward line and you can build a forward line around so um and then you know um that half back line was you know pretty impressive and they they rarely I would say ever ever
Lost in in a battle bles were scared to play I’ve heard stories bles were scared to play against wer I reckon the biggest example of that would have been our first derby he was he was he was so fired up and ready to just run through brick
Walls and he got us all running through brick walls too you smashed the Dockers that day yeah yeah yeah so I mean tough tough tasks for them you know there’s we’re talking a real season campaigning team like we’re on the March and um you know these guys are playing the I don’t
Know I don’t even know what Derby was let’s say fourth game or something of the season and you know yeah um was like the pter pub fre West Coast you’ve been um you haven’t been able to knock them off in a long time till uh couple of
Young Bloods came into the team well we pretty sure sure I I won’t hear the end of this for a long time you kicked the goal in the granny 94 Premiership was a good one I did well I would say it was a bit fortunate but
I’ll take it uh the fullback kicked it to me [ __ ] on the Mark hey no I was sitting uh on the 50 just outside 50 I think so and then just dropped it back over his head really so from a kick out yeah it was from a kick out very good
Well I think that put us um 70 odd points up so we weren’t um well we’re celebrating I think we won that game by 80 so um you know it was it was a the last quarter although it was it was on it was you could see there was a few um
Smiles what’s the celebrations like after winning a flag at AFL level as a 19 20y old oh oh man hard to put into words really you know you’re you’re 20 you’re at the MCG you you’re playing with a a like you know your home State team there
Wasn’t two teams around at that stage you know so we’re we’re the only state I mean only team in our state and um you I’d been following him since exception in ‘ 87 and um there you are at the at the Pinnacle it was pretty awesome um
We’ve we’ve heard people um tell us about you guys being in your full like tracksuit kit um after the game just celebrating in clubs and stuff didn’t want to get changed not just after the Grand Final either this is over a sustained period of time we’ve been told
You I I reckon I missed the the height of that sort of that was like yeah the club rumors and stuff like that there’s so many great rumors about club rumors and and what the the the um the tabs they used to get and they just wander in
In their kit straight off the plane and yeah so you’re telling me you’ve never done that before never did it things have Chang is on mid90s early 90s things have changed we better not see any proof of you walking around in nightclubs in your full track you wouldn’t have would have me
Me um right so 94 gets done and and you know then it’s fair enough to say that the club you know still challenging and it goes through a decent rebuild stage Mick leaves during a period Judy comes in as we spoke about um what what’s that
Like cuz you’re starting to come in you win a best in Ferris in 99 so you six sorry 96 my bad second in ’99 yes equal second no I think I might have been third or no you’re equal second you’re you have one vote behind and yeah blue
Won it and you bronny and someone else one yeah okay there you go um so you’re a success you know you’re you’re one of the best players in the team there but it’s a developing period right it’s it’s the middle part of your career um what
Sort of lessons do you do you learn from that coming from a successful period through a real building phase where you effectively need to play yeah totally um you know we were coming like we’re still jeez 99 was a good year for us we we actually went through I think 12 And1 or
Something through the halfway mark of the season but then we just fell in a big hole and limped into the finals you know you talk about momentum we just had it at the wrong time of of the year so that was a dis a disappointing year but
We we were still up and about and then um you know obviously some major mck decides um that you know he needs a he’s heading east and um we get a new coach and things just didn’t work out we just couldn’t we didn’t Jael as a team and um
It was pretty tough there for a couple of years and um yeah so you know there was an we just sort of just had to keep battling away and trying to be competitive to a point where um you know we knew there were some young kids coming through we’ drafted pretty well
We’d um picked up embley um Dean Cox um kazzy was kazzy was oh M he was he was he had the team on his shoulders in 200 2001 he was six five years six years into his career and he was he was um carrying us was he as close do you think
What we saying with Harley raid and I play with Nick nanu which I think was similar sort of areas but Ben Cousins at that period he was the prince Perth yeah yeah yeah I mean he started in his first year was 96 and we had a good year in
’96 we got a little bit um robbed through the system of the AFL where we earned a home final but there needed to be a final at the MCG so we had to travel and we lost it so um you know you know what a home final does for you sco
So abely yeah so we’ um that had a they had a um um a rule there that there had to be a final atfl coffers that happened in 96 so he um but that was his first year uh he won the ring star that year and um oh
Look that was just the start of his his awesome career for the club and um 2000 2001 he he really um set the standard there and um you know then we as I said recruited really well we got Daniel Kerr on board Judy later in 01 and um uh
Chady Fletch was already on the on the list Brony had been a couple of years so we sort of started to build the nucleus of a of a pretty good team so you drafted the clubs in Midfield number one draft pick so I’m hearing cousins J Kerr
Brawn is this about the time you start transitioning to the backline mate I worked out pretty quickly especially when CJ turned up the training that you know I um I was perhaps lacking a yard of pace to play in the Midfield anymore fa anyone would have it’s not like a couple of plebs
Rocking up to the foot CL I might go to the back line yeah so I transitioned slowly um we then recruited uh Tyson Stang line and um slow midfielder yeah big ass big no torso but you know long legs and um he uh he complimented KH
Judy and Curry in there in the middle brilliantly so yeah he was um I sort of transitioned down to my half back back pocket sort of uh and and yeah we built a uh great um Team within a team there um as you know backlines are the
Backbone of any any side and um yeah so uh with um a couple of youngsters in Bowie Waters and Adam cwood um we um formed a pretty good backline Fords sell memberships right people come to watch them play footy mid sign sponsorships they get all the money backs with
Premierships yeah I like that does that sound about right yeah yeah yeah so you move into the backline you’ve been playing with backs John wold’s now the coach um what I think if we look at the West Coast team right now maybe in getting towards similar phase
Where they’re going to go to the draft two or three times in a row and build a real corn nucleus of the Jud cousin ker y types embley so at that time sort of 0304 do you know that that that group is do you feel that success that You’ seen
At the start of your career yeah um totally probably one of the the biggest um M moments or you look back and you go we had a camp at Kieran Cove over in um on the East Coast and we put a vision together and um this is sort of maybe O2
O3 I I can’t remember exactly but anyway there was a lot of um buy in by the group about what we wanted to achieve and what we’re going to live by and our principles for that going forward and um you know it seemed to really suit our
Group and we bonded really well and um and there wasn’t a lot of uh turnover of players from probably o 23 to 0607 like we kept the nucleus of those players and we just kept getting better and better each year and um but I reckon a lot of
It sort of stemmed from that that camp we had that uh allowed us to sort of um get a Buy in on what we wanted to achieve and the the way the um the coaches allowed us to uh sort of um lead the team now we’ve got the famous ochre
Jumper behind you I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a Drew bfield sen on it to be honest Rowan Jones David wund I can see back there um do you you would have played in that jumper we did mate we did I don’t think we won a game
In it we think we maybe should bring it back like it’s that bad that maybe it’s good that’s what they’re thinking near at back chat do what do you remember when they first showed you guys like assume there was some sort of meeting with they revealed this yeah they just
Revealed it and said this will be your I can’t the alternate strip yeah your away strip or your your home was your home strip oh god um anyway we worked out pretty quickly that we only win premierships in the um royal blue and um gold right that’s the only outfit
We win premierships in so we um we quickly went back to that I think you wearing it in the demolition derby did you play that game yeah yeah played that game yeah we were we were wearing it can you remember that game yeah were you in amongst it or were you just
On the outskirts um I think I was lying on the bottom of a pack a couple of times shie Mac looking over the top of me don’t get up don’t get up Drew um Drew I was cuz I was watching some highlights of the fights this morning
And um just just you you wake up and just watch that yeah and the one thing I saw about you every time I was looking to see if you throwing punches or whatever as soon as the fight would break out you’d be the first one grabbing the ball and running trying to
Kick trying to get absolutely easy stat yeah absolutely straight away there’s always fights going On’s got the ball yeah three or four times he’s grabbing the ball yeah smart very man if the Umpire let me take go I was I was off that was wild this is this is the
This is the guardian pav going on this is the yeah the Kik and um re yeah they were at it what you thinking G like it was fighting it wasn’t it wasn’t a mallet people punching it was just it was just oh look it
Was it was the well I feel it was the tone that they wanted to set and um you know a lot of those boys were talking about you know don’t take a back step so you know we if it’s on it was going to be on and um that’s what the tape sort
Of shows too like you know no one was taking a too much of a back step maybe me grabbing the ball and trying to run off and keepi the allall but um yeah it’s uh you know not you know surprising but not you know you can understand it you know it’s pretty
Fierce rivalry the Derby so um but you again you probably would never see that again these days what what was the chat like after in the change rooms I assume everyone’s like what the [ __ ] just happened pretty pretty much you sort of yeah um you’re pretty fired up though
You you you really want well um we lost that one yeah one point yeah so you know pretty pretty disappointing Darren glass fumbled one in the gold square that would have that would have um he was playing as a forward that day yeah he only won in the goal Square missed
Missed an opportunity to kick a goal they would have won that a fullback now last time fullback at that one of the great fullbacks of all time could Mark in the goal Square all all failed forwards get back glassy um 2005 big season for the club
Um you’ve got this group this Core Group you’re in the backline now um and it’s propably on now that that Midfield is humming yeah got a strong backline behind it um your your role you you turn into a lock down defender in in that grand finally play Nick Davis a bit of a
Rivalry with Sydney yeah massive rivalry probably across the four years or sort of um you know we that we matched up well they matched up on us really well us on them so you know you knew it was always going to be a ding-dong battle
And um you know as results show that it always was so um but yeah look Nick Davis and I um often found ourselves well me playing on him um uh and and as I said you know a lot of our game plan or game style back then was oneon-one
Type footy so you know very different again to to that nowaday footy um do remember late in the um GF I I was on the bench and so was Nick Davis and he got up to go on and they cleared the forward line out Sydney so
Glassie and Barry Hall were up on the half forward line and um you know Bowie was out and Jonesy U was out as well all across the half back line and um weo was out chicky was out and it was me and Nick Davis in the in the GOL Square not
A pleasant place to be mate as you know with your efforts with Jordan de go in the 18 you know it’s um it’s a pretty L not stuff no you’re sort of like come on boys don’t be afraid to come back you know and um it’s probably one of the
Reasons why EMB won the norm Smith you know he came back took a couple of big telling marks in that last um last quarter so that’s due to you by sounds but squealing your guts out in the golf get back help out so yeah um yeah good times like you
Know you love those challenges um and um yeah it was um you know a great outcome in the end we we we got across the line that time when when you um start your career so 91 lost Grand Final 92 win a grand final 93 prelim 94 winning Grand
Final did as a young kid I do you think well we’re just you’re just playing grand finals that’s that’s what you do and then there such a big gap 10 year Gap well we played finals every year except for two so it was probably looking back back at it that we missed a
Couple of big opportunities in those campaigns and I reckon 96 was one of them 99 might have been one as well um that we had a bloody good team but we just didn’t quite gel at the right time and we we you know um yeah ultimately weren’t good enough but um yeah you’re
Sort of um then to miss finals for a couple of years you’re sort of like hang on this is no fun uh and we you know obviously a lot of hard work went into getting that team um up and about and um yeah so so we played We snuck into
Finals I think our first year in ‘ 01 under wer and um you know kept getting better and better from there going to 06 did you know that was going to be your last season I actually had a reasonable year in ‘ 05 um as in the body held up
Well I got through it played every game and I thought oh yeah I’ll keep going until um uh you know the body stops um what didn’t help we’re building a house at the time and the Thursday night before the first game there was a uh that afternoon that evening I just left
The footy Club went back to check the house to see how it was progressing there was a bobcat there cleaning up some rubbish and they needed this sign move so I thought you know maybe being a bit of a handyman I’ll move the sign anyway didn’t see that someone had put a
Um like an ax wedge through it and there was a sharp little bit of metal sitting there and I sliced my thumb right open through the nerves and um and the tendon and on the Thursday night before the first game oh is this 06 06 so I drove
Back got my wife to drive me back to the club where doc Mo was and um I walked in there and went mate I think I’ve done something here and he goes okay straight into surgery for you wow you missed first part of this season yeah so I um yeah what
Um yeah so round nine I think you got nine maybe yeah back into the team yeah yeah got back into the team so there you go we um I know you can conveniently just lost over 2005 lost Grand Final we’ve put that to the back of your yeah
We don’t talk about those things there’s a big moment in that one you kicked it behind I think hit the post so so could you have man if you kick that goal West Coast win I reckon we’re we’re a better chance 100% 100% no would we would have
Gone um not that I know anything about it mate we would have been 16 points up at the 10-minute Mark of the last quarter so was in the last I pric now and instead it made us 11 so uh no look we had our opportunities again in there
And that was one of them that’s how foot he goes yeah and you you sort of um you missed that um we had other chances um you know we just we we just went in front at the right time and um you look at those you know back in and you can do
It with every game and and see opportunities that went missing or you didn’t take the most of and um anyway hit the inside of the post too not that you’re holding on to that do you remember where you were with with the Leo Barry Mark like it’s one of
The Great Moments of AFL history and it’s not you’re on the wrong side of it but were you near it yeah no I wasn’t near it I was um thought you might have been under the pack somewhere no well yeah no I was uh playing on Nick Davis
Again that year and we were sitting probably um Center Wing sort of watching it all unfold you know hoping the ball didn’t come my way and hoping you know that that we got that one last chance and um you know as you said yeah Ash sampy got held
Barry Leo Barry takes the mark you know Chris jeld Chris jeld all all the boys yeah should have been free kick all I run into Leo Barry every now and then and and particularly around Grand Final time and um he he said I’ve done one thing in my career and it’s and it’s
Highlighted every year Leo Barry used to when when he marks it do you know that’s that’s it yeah well there was messages going around that you know 30 1 minute 30 seconds and you know that sometimes goes forever but you knew that he was going to hold it and um you know us
Getting back um the ball was going to be a challenge in time so we spoke about we skipped to o6 and speak about you know um encumbered starts of the Season you missed those games and be in and out play bit of subie that year as well playing the qualifying you you dropped
After that though yeah so again I reckon um you know little bit of a a matchup scenario this is how it was sort of explained to me we’re playing West and Bulldogs a very fast running team so all of a sudden that’s not on U on my um specialty list anymore fast and
Hard running Scouting Report yeah so um anyway so I I miss out then and um you think we were going to get back in the t uh look I knew I was a chance just had to be a little bit on the matchups and how what teams we were playing we went
To Adelaide i i f got back into the side that for that game um that was uh that was a big win by the boys one of our best away um to beat Adelaide in Adelaide um down at three quarter time and um we you know got it done so you
Know it was um always hopeful never certain that you’d hold your spot but um sort of uh yeah rest of his history the Sydney West Coast rivalry again is reignited well not it just continues through this period 06 um dur during that game it was a back
And forth game just like 05 is there moments to stand out to you that you can remember or you think about good or bad uh um probably a like a classic you know there’s like Daniel chick’s smother recover and Shepherd is a great moment in that game yeah you know um sets up
Adam Hunter for a goal um and what was uh really interesting is that that had happened in a in a training session in preseason something very similar in that setup and Hunt had kicked the goal and he celebrated the same way as the Grand Final and like you know you sort
Like when we seen that in the highlights leading up into the game um of how what we’d done from January to September to get to here and um they play a little hot video and that was yeah and that was in it and and I still remember like you
Know and and all of a sudden you see you know chicky doing all the hard work and um you know gives the ball off and um yeah that was a that was a huge cool did you have any you things happen that ah you know it’s a moment I and I’d be
Interested to see if you ever felt this that you know I talked about being on the bench and getting put um one-on-one out in the um forward line on Nick Davis and you’re sitting there and you go this is what you trained your entire life for you know this is the moment
This is what you enjoy like this is such a great place to be uh you’re you know absolutely crapping yourself but you’re like I’ve done everything I need to do I’m ready for this moment um and um you know there was a couple of one-on ones
That I managed to win and you sort of you know goes the other way and it could be the different result and that’s what the back line’s all about is that like did you feel that way at all when you all of a sudden got the job okay you’re
On theoy back pocket you know you make a mistake it’s a goal for them but you win it and it changes the game like you said that’s what the back Line’s about So you you’re in these contests your career right and um but Grand final day for me in and
That day like I had I had uh contest that day that um I never won my whole career that I managed to W it was like proper life and death because um uh yeah like you said confident about you you you that that for me 18 was like that’s
Where I was meant to be and and yeah you giving me a little Shivers but I remember in the last play we we we weren’t in front for the entire day until and the very last of the game they used to play one so they pulled back into the
Into the top um D50 Ford 50 and we had a loose behind the player nowo who was sort of in front of me but then there was 70 M and then us and I remember they got the clearance and they had vco Taylor Adams maybe and another
Langdon just charging yoi as he snapped it and if you watch the vision with probably it’s probably about 4 seconds to go he always snaps it and he gets it and then game over but R and trako is is about 20 cm from smothering the footy
Yeah yeah and no one in front of him other than and and I and I think about it a bit that I remember thinking and watching it just being like here we go this here we go this is be Grand Final win or loss here here it comes and then
You know it doesn’t happen doesn’t happen but yeah it’s um it’s an interesting spot to be in the middle of the MCG 100,000 people and then you’re just on one-on-one and that’s pretty much all that matters you’re not thinking about anything else no 100% no they and and you know that’s I don’t
Know they they’re pretty big highs in the game that you just you you look back and you look back on fondly and you go wow that was a that was a pretty special moment well 94 you win by a shitload 80 points and you and so you’d won it three
A time you probably won it yeah yeah um toally different games but still the satisfaction is there but you know you the 06 would’ve been building up for you know 5 years on trying to win this thing when the saen goes Sur it’s a different feeling cuz you don’t know what’s going
To happen whereas yeah I made an I’m 14 years into a career true not not 31 games 31 games mate wow so my mom will be losing her mind over this hey um is it turn into you can ask me another question yeah no I’m going to
See if you um remember our bonding moment it was a big eagles backline bonding moment oh [ __ ] hang on can you I’ll give you a hint it was after the 18 GF oh absolutely yeah monkey Brennon was there yeah oh mate absolutely upstairs in the whatever that place was called
Yeah mate we all shared I might not have been a beer was maybe shelter soda vka soda something little Whi Snapper and draw um absolutely I remember it absolutely that was that was really cool one of the great so to for the rest of us please please
Um obviously went across and watched the 18 Grand Final and uh after the after the game caught up with a few of the ex teammates um old bo old boys um you know monkey Brennan Michael Brennan was one of them Tyson sting line another and we managed to track down where um these
Lads were having a few beers later in the night so we thought oh let’s Wonder along because um I think um Jacob breno might have been on the list as well or he was part of it all so we tracked them down and we’ve ended up at this nightclub
Three stories up and we’ve run straight into scoy great and um there’s me monkey Brandon and scoey and obviously we start telling our own tales about playing on the gun forward winning the Premiership for the team like you know Michael Brennan did it in ’92 994 on abet and
You know uh you know I did it on Nick Davis and scoy did it on deoy jeez we were pumping ourselves up great it was it was a moment for Dow Defenders that’s good it was about 2 in the morning and I do remember it
Absolutely I do why we we did a Big Lot linking of the arms like the symbol of like we all gave a fist up in the air fist together that’s very good yeah so no that was anyway great defending Defenders Eagles bonding moment there that’s bloody brilliant across three generations
Bloody brilliant do do you retire as soon as that game finishes do you hang the boots up that day you tell boys that’s that’s it for me uh I didn’t I didn’t know I I sort of um waited until after a you three or
Four days sort of thing uh we had a bit of Celebration to do have been a good area four days later yeah mind you didn’t stop Nico asking for my jumper before you retired before I retired he go if you’re thinking about it [ __ ] that’s classic I said mate
If it happens I’ll I’ll let you have it and bad still got his footy kit on just sit down his something so anyway I think at the um FNB later that week yeah announced my retirement and um also announced that uh Mark was going to take me jumper unreal
So uh all good worked out well they call you the tro and um for those listening along at some stage during my career we we we needed to name the lines so you would have heard me speak about it a lot Dan the Bulls we were so that what we were given
Was um sort of to give yourself a bit of a spirit animal or a spiritual kind of leader we went the Bulls right um red R to a bull doesn’t back down doesn’t care who’s in the way just smack him Bulls good animal amazing the forwards just no
Idea with what they’re doing in life really um they went with the fear like they they didn’t pick a thing they pick the word idiots anyways then that’s another story but the Midfield they were the Trojans right off the back of Drew Banfield nickname the Trojan is that I
Think that’s I’m pretty sure how I heard it too yeah correct that’s awesome where’s the Trojan come from uh so in the ’90s late or mid 90s um an article was written about me saying that I was the the the warhorse of the West Coast Eagles Midfield is that a
Positive thing I’m not sure like I was sort of like War dies in that movie yeah I know sad maybe it was Workhorse I can’t remember one of that it was Workhorse War warh they like sneak it in the gates and leave it in there and they
All jump out it attack people it was obviously a big enough headline that a few of the boys in the club thought they old warhorse and it doesn’t sound it sounds like self different it sounds like a piss T yeah anyway so I think mdy Waterman might have been one of the
First to ready he start Trojan come on let’s get out of the track Trojan and um it stuck so um yeah it’s um I think that’s where I understand where it sort of came from and um yeah the fear the fear so bad Trojan’s excellent Trojan’s excellent right and they embodied that
And they used Drew fielders there kind of they had like pictures of banners back in the ’90s just big guns shirtless oiled up actually actually uh right career done and dusted um all finished stepped into I think I saw you on the boundary for Fox footy how’ that go oh
Jeez you reflect on some some decisions in life and perhaps that wasn’t a good one to get involved in that it was interesting I found it um you know um you know we had about a week lead up when I got the call oh do you want to
Commentate on the boundary for um do the comments on the boundary this weekend I was like what this weekend all right I’ll give it a go yeah anyway um probably needed to put a bit more time and effort into it so you said before you didn’t watch any footy that year
Just rock up it was I was working full-time had a kid that was uh one years old and um had another on the way arrived about July that year so you know yeah in the trenches on that regard and was coaching the state 18s as well so
Had to go watch footy on the weekends to um you know we’re putting a you know side together for that Carnival that was a good Carnival too you want to hear the list of boys yeah that um came from that one nickn was our Ruckman uh Danny Rich
Was Midfield M Chris Maron in the Midfield uh Alex rant was that re Palmer Alex rant um Chris yaron um stacked uh who else so you were their their junior coach yeah so um fa to say that Jared mcneel was the senior coach and I was the Midfield coach for that so
You were the mid coach of nickn masto apart fair to say you taught them everything they we won the carnival basically on the back of the Midfield yeah and you were the coach put it all together put it all together join the dots uh mate um been a
Great chat you’ve heard enough from Dan and I though we just got a bit to finish off this is called schoal Med not social scal with me yeah I now uh this is from the people for you so they’ve put some questions together for you okay we’re
Going to ask him um Hayden rackliffe uh the best opponent you’ve played on and who had the best chat on field best chat as in opposition team uh would be Tony Shaw um you I’ve gone back in the archives there but he was early 90s um Collingwood player and uh God he
Could talk he never shut up he was brilliant at the chat and um I wouldn’t say he was the toughest opponent I reckon that was sort of someone like um uh Paul Kelly from the swans um Craig Bradley uh that was early days and then as I moved into the
Backline you know Nick Davis um had some really good battles with him great any of your teammates good on the lip uh emers didn’t mind a bit of a chat Brony was good Brony was brilliant actually he he could run all day Brony so I often got him to wrestle with my um
My forward pocket yes and try and exhaust him out and then Bron run back to the wing all happy and you know my forward sitting there going and I’m going yeah that’s good so yeah you had little things up your sleeve that you tried to um work in your
Favor I mean we just touched on this but I think probably just worth another reverse over it benassy say yeah do you still have nightmares over your very shortlived boundary Rider appearance how many years did you do it for uh I think I got 11 games that’s good
Effort I reckon the um the biggest nightmare I have is when um we were playing freem mantle it was a derby and a lot of the Freo Boys still thought I was wearing the blue and gold jumper even though I was sitting on the boundary line in a suit and tire and
Sers and Desi Hedland have had a massive Barney out in the field yes and Desi’s come off and absolutely torn into me and we’re we’re going at it because because he’s seeing me as blue and gold and um [ __ ] yeah and and then I’ve had to
Give a half timee speech or chat and I’ve got a Freo guy literally a meter off me from the boundary we set up way too close to the boundary he’s given me what for about you know how bad West Coast are and uh I’m honestly getting
Sprayed spit all over me and I’m sitting there trying to talk to the boys upstairs telling them my my take on the game I just imagine the boundary Rider going head tohe with Dez head you like what you that’s just so funny so anyway de’s been on oh he’s been around
The and I get along Ripper but he of the moment was great yeah I loved it this is great like give me some boots I’ll get out there come on um so anyway that was uh I don’t know whether a highlight but it was a moment yeah this is interesting
One cuz um I’ve experienced this firsthand theore Jore Jaden how often do people ask about Bailey B field from the Dockers this is a twofold question so I don’t think well I don’t think some people will know that yeah I do have a son called Bailey bfield so I’ve got a
Son who’s also a footballer who football he’s down at clamont footy Club at the moment he’s 18 so uh his name’s Bailey but um the Bailey freem manal Bailey is um from broom um so all my career early particularly I got asked oh you related
To those band fields in broom and oh no I don’t know any of those vi I wonder what they like anyway so um ended up in broom on a offseason so I thought I’d Wonder in and I did a bit of homework found out where they were so they’re the
Boys that run Willie Creek pearls and um Barren and Robert and um so I got to meet them sort of mid90s early 2000s and uh we’re still friends now and um I actually had uh Bailey’s grandmother Rob and Bailey come over to my place with the best ever uh family tree I’ve ever
Seen of a family have like we went back Generations so we sat down and looked for a link and I reckon we found one we’re not 100% sure we’ve got to follow it up a bit but um that’s cool yeah we’re um we’re seeing if there is a link
But um yeah his grandmother was a wonderful lady we reunited at the Grand Final banners and I um our part Amber banners his partner and Alex and Luke shy and Danny Shou were there um shout out Danny Shou she love this story um and Bailey bfield um Drew’s son was
There Bailey Y and uh I introduced Bailey Banfield Drew’s son as Bailey Banfield just because I wanted to make I wanted to make the assertion that Drew is Bailey’s father Yes and Danny to Bailey’s face go you’re you’re not Bailey bamfield right to his face I said no
This is this is Bailey Banfield Drew’s son and she said no Bailey bfield plays for freal this is not Bailey bfield and we been on like that for an hour in front of Bailey son of Drew there we go good on you Danny you made an absolute diette of yourself now um Wy
Out very good friends with Danny by the way just uh not um anyway uh Wy 85 a little bit down uh craziest teammate off field couple you played a c a couple of years there yeah played a couple years I could break them down um all
Right um can take crazy however you like as well could be oh look I wouldn’t say yeah crazy I I reckon just just his you know uh ability to get a team up and about and just you know go about things his own way was um
Chrissy M wearing in the in the 90s I just loved him he was just uh he he was unconventional but um he did he got away with things that he couldn’t get away with but he just was brilliant um and Bs loved him yeah loved him and um you know
And he he never let you down no matter what what he ended up doing he was um he was he was brilliant so um and then um you know all those Legends you know as you do had for atire and um a new crop came through and H probably the
Combination of uh Fletcher emilyy they were pretty that was pretty funny I remember we were on an end of season footy trip and um these guys are pretty early in their careers and um they tried to get me in a headlock so I’ve got both
Of them in a headlock like this they say I’m gonna win a Premiership with you Trojan and I’m like oh we’ve got no chance with these two peanuts and anyway it took us another five years and we we got there yeah we yeah and so we’ve got a you know I’ve
Got a great relationship with those two and um yeah that were pretty crazy Carl Sinclair uncore off the back of that story best footy trip you’ve been on we in the ’90s you you’ll be disappointed didn’t continuous [ __ ] but we had some amazing footy trips we um uh
First my first footy trip was unheard of we actually uh went out of um preseason and went to the go Coast in the middle of preseason so I did I did four weeks of training went to the go Coast for a week and then came back that
Was in 93 that was yeah no not ’92 ended ’92 oh 93 I don’t know one of the Years anyway unheard of never done again but uh we went to we played a exhibition game in London um aou that was the big demolition one where Em’s out in the
Field knocking Pap I play we played Adelaide a couple of times and and um then um that 301 later on so you know there were great trips we managed to get across to South Africa that was probably the best one and the team did the zamb
Bey River white waterer rafting a few of us jumped off the bridge bungee jumping and we went on safaris all together so that was a huge lot of fun did you like make the meet royalty while you’re in London one of those trips didn’t you get introduced to the queen or something no

Great to hear stories from a legend in the game! thanks
As a West Coast supporter, Drew Banfield symbolises the continuity of the club through two of its great eras. Having someone who can share their insight and bring you inside the walls of 1993/4, late 90s, early 00s, and the 06 premiership all from the same perspective is unique, because no one else quite lived that as a player. I lived it from the outside at the time, but retrospectively you find you kind of remember things in separate periods. Clubs aren't totally like that though. Inheritance is a real thing and identity is formed over time, and you can really see the overtones of that in the story with the 3 defenders from their different generations. Drew links up a lot of history in our club and is an important part of its fabric.
Can you get Monkey Brennan on the poddy?
Good work Will . Dan…keep em comming
Lewis Jetta I think he missed out of that under 18’s? Team
Great interview again guys.Awesome stories from the best years .The Trogan looking in good nick too
Sheedy said that he'd put up with Malthouse complaining all match about the umpires and opposition etc (I think the coaches boxes were next to each other). So Sheeds and Malthouse were former Richmond players and had a rivalry, so Sheed lost it after the match and waved the jacket around. He admitted that it was a bit over the top and unnecessary, but he got carried away. Good to see spontaneous stuff.
Banners is right. Really Cousins carried the team from 2000 to 2004 really. Outstanding week in and week out, I actually think when talk about who is the best Eagle it is remarkably close between Cousins and Judd. Judd was a star in a good team. But Cousins was a star in a poor-average team year after year. Then you've got Jakovich Matera and Cox on the next level. Then McKenna, Hurn Kennedy and Kemp. Apologies for anyone that I omit… then you get to guys like Kerr, Mainy Worsfold Glass McIntosh Sumich
I highly enjoyed this episode 💙💛so rare that is fans get to hear from this legend
Great episode some great stories
