To hit driver longer and straighter you need to give yourself enough depth to return the club from the inside. The best way to do this is to achieve adequate rotation in both the hips and torso.

In this golf lesson, PGA pro Kerrod Gray and David Laing demonstrate some easy backswing tips to stop getting short and quick in your golf swing and make a full backswing just like the pros.

The biggest error off the tea is when you get short and quick if you’re lacking distance and accuracy well this is the video you need to watch because in this collaboration David and myself are going to show you exactly how to fix this once and for all let’s get stuck

In well that was absolutely sent down here at the 18th at the Montgomery in Dubai here and a big part of the reason that was such a beautiful golf shot Dave was because of your back swing right you had enough back swing you had enough

Rotation and we do see a lot of players on a shot like this tight water either the side we tend to get a little bit nervous and they get short and quick don’t they yeah very easy to cut your back swing off too quick yeah then so if

I te this up for you here and what I want you to do mate is kind of show me what you would see with the players at your Academy here on what they would kind of struggle with generally if you took a hundred of your golfers out here onto this TX

The general common pattern with their back swing what would that look like yeah so I would say first of all the visual of it distracting and then you see the water we start to get a bit more within oursel a bit more hesitant y then suddenly the back swing get short cuz we

Don’t want to rotate we’re anxious to hit the shot and not mess it up and we actually limit the back swing the Torso doesn’t quite rotate so we get cut off here yeah look at that there’s just not enough swing yeah whereas we would love to get the sensation of winding up so

Your arms can work more around you you’ve completed your back swing have so much more time to then send the club through the golf ball perfect so if you want to set up to that ball again for me and I’m just going to bring some awareness to a few key pieces here so

Make that short little back swing that a lot of players are going to struggle with now we see that Dave’s hip if I lay this golf club across his hip line here he might have changed his Flex of his knees a little bit but he actually hasn’t turned his pelvis now the average

Professional golfer is going to turn their hips about 45° and straight away that’s going to free up his upper body it’s going to allow his arms to longer as he creates turn giving him what’s called depth now depth is the distance the end of the handle here travels away

From the golf ball the player who would struggle with their worst ball striking on a shot like this if you restart for me and swing to the top they would not turn their arms would then lift and fold and bunch as a result and how weak does

That feel Dave yeah I I hatte that feeling so then as Dave starts down from this position the shaft is going to come in super Steep and more than likely is going to hit the top of the club sky is driver nice big mark on top and it’s

Going to go straight up in the air we can probably catch it so we don’t want any of that right so Dave what is a great feel a great move a great drill exercise that players from the address position on a shot like this cuz getting

Short and quick is probably one of the main reasons that they’re going to hit terrible shots here that they can allow at least get enough hip turn at least enough chest turn to give them the depth in the room to swing through just words in your head as in simple things first

Of all always complete your back swing give yourself time or nice thoughts as you walk into the shot but potentially like a visual of where your zip or buttons point where the belt buckle points so you’re going to allow them to move around and you’ve got a sense of

Them fully aiming like almost opposite of down the line away from the target I really I really love that one there mate because look the hips need to turn 45 the chest actually needs to turn about 90° really to give us a an optimal position there mate so as you from your

Setup um maybe if we imagine a spotlight on our chest and we’re trying to turn that behind as much as we can so it shines in the opposite direction yeah nice visual um stops you getting too careful keeps that flow yeah really good yeah perfect one other one that I really

Really like and I want you to try this one out Dave you set up to the ball for me uh I want you to imagine the back of your right shoulder here for the right hander I want you to try and turn that as far back towards the target so it’s

Facing at it at the top of the Swing perfect and we can see as a result of doing that reason I love this back shoulder move is it’s going to move the left shoulder as a result I don’t know about you but I see too many players try

And get their left shoulder underneath their chin but we can move these independently right and they get so obsessed about moving the shoulder underneath the chin they actually don’t create any of that big turn we’re looking for so the back of the right shoulder here is also a great feel yeah

Really good for getting full torso rotation callling up your spine rather than just pushing the shoulders and the arms absolutely so I’m going to knock this ball off the team what I want you to do is just have a couple of practice swings over the top of that te for me

Really focusing on getting that big turn for me Dave I want the back of the right shoulder facing the target I want the chest and the hips turning back nice big Spotlight there beautiful even more try and crank it around as much as you can wonderful and we’re going to put this on

Slow-mo so you can see exactly how much turn Dave was getting relative to what he would have been doing at the beginning without a doubt on a shot like this regardless needless to say on the Range as well uh we see players get way too short and way too quick so this

Little move here cranking up the chest cranking up the back swing cranking up the hips everything to try and give you enough depth is going to give you the ability to return the club from the inside and hit some bombs mate let’s send it down there just like that guys perfect amount

Of rotation lots of room excellent job cheers
