About Ross Eves Golf
Ross Eves Golf is all about improving your golf. From golf fitness, to golf biomechanics to beginner’s golf tips!
So, what’s my background?
Well, as most professional golfers my dream was to play professionally. However, that dream was a little lofty for someone with my talent. So, I decided to take a different route. This route was to investigate the science behind getting better, specially how to hit the ball further! After all, who doesn’t want to hit the ball further.
This desire to learn how to increase swing speed lead me to investigate the body in terms of golf fitness and golf biomechanics. This interest in golf fitness lead me to complete TPI Level 1 and 2; become a qualified massage therapist and then extend that knowledge by completing a Masters degree.
During my Masters, I focused my research solely on increasing club head speed through golf fitness interventions. This line of scientific enquiry provided me with first evidence and golf fitness routines which would increase swing speed and hence increase club head speed. Personally, I found this research to be extremely helpful, and I increased club head speed by 15mph (from 100mph to 115mph) within 1 year.
After this I have turned my attention to the biomechanics of the golf swing. This combination of golf biomechanics and golf fitness knowledge allows me to provide coaching to all levels to help increase club head speed.
Dustin Johnson’s one of the greatest players in the game he hits it long he’s so athletic and we’re going to take an indepth look at his golf swing what he does to create his power and some of the unique aspects of Dustin Johnson swing if you like this video please hit the
Subscribe button like button and there is a discount code for swing analysis in the description so let’s take a look firstly at Dustin’s setup now the one thing you will notice from face on is let’s look at that left hand grip look how strong that grip is those Knuckles
Are turned over very very strong grip it’s a great sort of strategy to employ if you do slice the ball but it creates some unique things in Dustin swing that we’ll look at in a little bit more detail as he goes through the swing if we look from down the line you’ll notice
Very neutral setup works a lot obviously with um Claude Haron and he is big on fundamentals just like his dad but Haron so a nice little rounding of the spine you’ll see a nice bit of FL foot flare that I talk about a lot in my videos
That just facilitates the hips to move correctly in the in the back swing and the down swing so just a very very athletic posture there you’ll notice as well he has got a little spit of spine tilt which will help with that driver to create some optimal launch angles now
What I want to take note of with d is this little secret move that I I sort of call that a lot of the long drive guys long drive Champions have what I want you to take notice of firstly is the trail heel and then the lead toe so
What you’re going to see with Dustin the first move is you see that subtle move down with that that trail heel can you see that trail heel slams down and then after that the lead toe lifts up see that subtle move now if we zoom out you’ll
See what that does is that just helps load that trail glute can you see how that pulls that right hip pocket back see that it’s very very subtle but it helps load that neuromuscular sort of tissue and create a lot of speed a lot of the long drive guys do this
Admittedly they’ll have more of a pronounced heel lift and drop than Dustin does so if we look from face on you can sort of just see that little move there as he’s lifting that toe and dropping that heel you’ll notice Dustin takes the club quite high off the ground
And outside the line initially so can you see how initially he just takes the club quite high and up and out pretty unique most guys you’ll see more in a straight line back but Dustin just has that club outside the the line a little and then he will move his hands outward
As he moves that hit back can you see that those hands are really working out very very good position there to create a lot of Speed most guys would like to see the hands a little bit deeper but it helps create a lot of width and keep the club
Head out in front of him so if you look from face on you’ll see that move where he just lifts up so almost as well if you notice that right hand how it’s almost creating a little bit more pressure on the grit there as he starts
To take away can you see that that Palm is working into that left thumb very very subtle but all these guys have some unique aspects of the Swing you’ll see his hips start to move laterally and then they will start to rotate so it moves a little bit laterally then start
To rotate now Dustin’s got a great takeaway position in terms of how much width widths he creates so you’ll see how far away that butt of the club is away from his waist little bit unique like we mentioned look how far away the hands are from the body not a lot of
Guys get into this position they’re more in a straight line those hands on the way back but it creates a lot of width there in Dustin sink you’ll see he’s got a little bit of wrist set there as well so let’s just get rid of those lines
Then as he takes the club back you’ll see how much that club works up and how much those hands are in front of the chest the camera angle is a little bit low here so the hands will look a little bit higher but great great position
There for Speed and power you can see how on this right hand side of the screen he’s going to start rotating and that chest is going to move over that trail leg and just look at the WID width there really wide it’s fundamental of the Harmons they love a lot of width in
The swing but what we’ll start to see now is because of that strong grip look at that club face it is so so short now if we zoom in on the left hand side you can see that club face and how it’s pointing back at the camera very very
Unique and it’s why Dustin has some unique things in his swing that are very unique to him so we’ll take him up to the top now and you’ll start to see from this position here he really starts to bow that lead wrist so if we bring him
Up you can see look how much flexion is in that lead wrist very very athletic position not a lot of guys can do that I personally don’t have the flexibility to get in that position and a lot of guys just won’t be able able to manage that
Position on the way down which you’ll talk about you can see here how that trail leg has started to straighten a little bit he’s maintained his posture and that trail hip has really worked back so we’ll just take him back to a similar position you can see how that
Trail hip starts to work back loading and look at how much that head has rotated from setup look at that rotation back just very very athletic position will take him back to the similar position and you can see look how much width he’s maintained he’s got that
Chest over the right side he’s got this nice sort of Y position here very very powerful for creating a lot of speed on the downswing and you can see look at that club face pointing way up to the sky so get rid of all these lines it’s
Looking a little bit messy take him a few more frames back you’ll start to see look at how high those hands are that trail elbows a little bit more behind him loads of rotation in the lower body that trail legs really has straightened now got a nice amount of side Bend there
But look at that wrist position look how much flexion is in that lead wrist if we bring him up to the top here and you can see look how high those hands are again the amount of chest rotation loads of hip rotation and that club face is
Pointing way up to the sky very very unique position and he’s got to do some funky things in the down swing to accommodate for that so we’ll just look at the sort of biomechanical aspects of this how he loads in transition you’ll start to see can you see that subtle
Move in the chest here he’s starting to move into the down swing as his hands are still going back so what he’s doing there is as his hands are moving back in the downswing he’s going to start to load through that lead foot that lead knee is going to start to rotate that
Hip is going to start to move down and then back and you can see look there boom look how that lead hip starts to move down that belt buckle is moving down and what he’s doing is he’s creating all these little micro stretches through the Torso through the
Shoulders through the hands that are going to enable him to create a tone of speed so we bring him down a few more frames and you can see look at that athleticism look at where his hips are pointing or his belt buckle but look at where his chest is pointing there a
Tremendous amount of stretch through here which also creates tremendous stretch through the shoulder and then he’s maintain that lag beautifully now we’ll notice more from down the line is I want us to watch this wrist position you can see he moves more into flexion there’s not a lot of guys who
Will have the flexibility to move that much into flexion when they’re already tremendously flexed at the top tremendous athleticism here it helps shallow that club shaft as you can see that shafts is going to drop behind him but what it does is look how strong that
Club face position is now and a few frames down can you see how we can just see off camera that red Club face pointing back at the camera if we look from face on you’ll see if we bring him to a similar position you can see how
Much that face is pointing at the camera and how short it is now it very very hard if you don’t have a lot of body rotation to not hit it horrendously left so what Dustin has to do now is really rotate those hips and rotate the chest
You’ll start to see this right knee really driving towards the Target now so watch if we bringing few more frames down you can see how that right knee is really driving look how much those hips have cleared the elbow is in a lovely position right below his should ER very
Very powerful for Speed you’ll start to see this club come down now and he’s nicely position to play a little cut Dustin likes to play those little squeezy Cuts because he is so short if he tries to hit a draw he can hit it off
The planet so it’s a very very good way of keeping it in play for Dustin you can see how much that right knee is driving towards the target look at that but look how he’s clear in tremendously through the hips you’ll start to see from face
On it’ll start to move that lead hip upwards as he’s driving through the ground like I said that trail knee is going to move towards the ball and look at that angle he’s created there tremendous amount of lag tremendous amount of power created there but the clubhouse is still very very short so
What Dustin has to do he’s got to keep rotating that chest through so let’s have a look and you can see how much he’s rotated here how much he’s rotated through the chest his arms start to extend we’ll see from face on there look that club face is so strong and look at
That chaing it’s why Dustin plays I think around a 12 de degree driver and very high lofts in his woods and his irons you’ll notice Dustin still plays blades the’re soft off step just to help him with a bit of spin because the club face is so short on the way down and
Then the amount of shaing which he has to get because of the posi unique positions and that unique bow in his lead wrist so he has to play with a lot of Loft on his clubs but it’s tremendously powerful look at that I mean he’s a unicorn there’s not a lot of
Guys that can get in that position John Rams very very similar um Brooks kka has a very Flex wrist as well now these guys are very very athletic and it’s not something that your average amateur should be copying so we’ll take him a couple of frames through look how he’s
Maintained that angle for a very very long time you’d notice guys like tiger in 2000 or like Adam Scott much more released Rory much more released there but Dustin can’t do that just because he is so strong you see a lot lovely athletic body position there that Heels
Come up off the ground and look at all the width that Dustin creates now on the way through look how he extend those arms that trail knee is moved towards the lead knee and look at that extension tremendously powerful you’ll see a lot of side Bend for Dustin he’s a tall guy
So he needs to do that especially with the body rotation he’s getting you’ll see guys who have a lot of chest and hip rotation getting quite a lot of side Bend you’ll see now those hands start to turn over and he really exits left which
Helps keep the path left so he can hit those squeezy cuts and keep them in play very very unique position that side Bend and those hands coming very low you’ll see a lot of the young guys coming out Nick dunlap’s similar sort of move where those hands exit left and there’s a lot
Of side Bend there but you’ll see works up beautifully and then just gets that full release very very athletic not a lot of guys can get in the positions that Dustin can but that’s what makes him such a great player he’s very much an athlete there’s some great videos of
Dustin hitting left-handed shots and it just shows he is an athlete and he’s one of the all-time great hopefully he’ll still win a few more Majors I know he’s getting on a little bit now but great swing very unique not one that I’d recommend people copy but he’s hell of a
