In this video you guys are going to learn the most under practiced skill in golf and it has nothing to do with your Technique it has to do everything with alignment and how you’re setting up on the actual golf course and actually nobody can do this for as long as I’ve

Been playing I haven’t played with any amateur that can align themselves correctly outdoors and it’s just killing your guys progress and your ability to translate everything that you learn in a lesson to when you go play on the actual course if you enjoyed the video be sure

So good on the range and then as soon as you step on the golf course it feels like you you have no idea what you’re doing the reason for that is not so much the technique is off it’s because you can’t Orient or aim yourself the same

Way you do on a in a in a bay or on the driving range as you do on the golf course and I’m going to show you guys how significant your aim is in in in your ability to apply everything that you learn and you feel during your

Practice when I’m standing here or whenever you’re standing in any Bay indoors on a driving range Outdoors you have this luxury of standing on a square box so you can line yourself up the same way every single time and that gives you freedom to kind of think about things in

Your swing or what ever that you’re working on so I have some alignment sticks on the ground just to kind of show you visually how you’re actually aiming right so I’ve just aimed uh the alignment sticks kind of down the line with the mat here but when it comes to

Aiming you want to make sure that whatever Target you have outside the club face must be aiming at the Target okay the second thing is that you have to be able to line up your body or your feet parallel to that line and everybody does this with without without any issue

On a mat because you have straight lines to kind of you know get your feet uh oriented correctly so that gives you the ability to kind of adjust your path you know focus on you know your back swing the top position whatever but as soon as

This goes away as soon as you you’re not standing on a box or you have no straight line reference on the ground nobody can aim and nobody can actually set up the same way and if you can’t set up the same way it’s going to encourage

You or dis encourage you from doing the same things that you’re doing when you’re practicing now whenever someone comes in a lesson I can I can always get them to hit it very very good but what I tell them to do usually is if they tell me that they can’t translate it outside

Or they see the same mistakes I tell them to aim at something across the mat right so aim at a Target to the right or to the left because that’ll tell me how they actually aim outside usually like I think 99% of players who are right-handed

If this is your target line if this is where you’re trying to aim most people will set up their feet like this okay so you can see that their feet are extremely closed relative to their intended target okay so if people set up this way their target is actually across

Their body lines so that’s going to encourage you without you actually really knowing it to swing it more over the top so alignment is actually the number one reason why the majority of golfers swing over the top is because they’re all oriented too far to the

Right they’re aiming way too far to the right without a joke no joke outside whatever Target that they tell them that they’re a trying to aim at they’re probably aiming minimum 50 yards right so if you’re someone that’s trying to apply you know a more in out swing path

Things like this you’re giving yourself a very low chance of being able to apply it so with a Target line across your body and you actually looking across your body you’re almost guaranteed you you’re going to have to swing it over the top in order for you to try and

Start the ball kind of online the other thing I wanted to to tell you is that lining up incorrectly can also affect your ball position very very greatly okay so if your if your aiming is off and your ball position changes that’s going to screw up everything that you’ve

Practiced right you’re not going to be able to to to apply it okay so what I get people to do just to test out their aim is I get them to aim usually at something like um on the screen okay not kind of in line with the mat but in this

Case I I put some balls in front of the mat because it might be easier for you guys to see it I’m going to try to aim basically at this ball right here it’s a little bit across the mat and I’m going to purposely aim basically like the most

Typical player that I see and and I’ll show show you how they actually aim all right so if I’m trying to aim at that ball when I walk in they everybody knows the process of you know a aiming at a spot a couple inches in front of the ball trying to

Aim the face at that Target okay but when they Orient the the feet they kind of look like this okay so if I put the club down okay and stand back and then maybe get another alignment sticker club and kind of point it near the target okay

You can kind of see that those those lines are not parallel right you can see that my feet line is much more to the right this is how most people aim okay now where they’re truly aimed so that’s aiming quite far right of that ball that

I was intending to aim at now if you were to extend that line out like 150 yards if you aim this far right you were probably aimed no no joke probably 30 to 40 yards right of your intended target the funny thing is when I adjust them if

I aim the target line right at the ball and I adjust this part to make it parallel now when people set up to it they they feel like they’re aiming extremely far left and the reason why is because their their eyes are on this side of the ball so when someone sets up

To it and looks at the Target because their eyes are on this side of the ball they look at the Target and they aim their bodies and their eyes right at the Target but you can see that when I if I use my eyes and line my my body at the

Target and then I set my club down my club is going to be aiming way off to the right and that’s the mistake if you set up correctly with the face aiming at the Target and you set up the feet it’s normal for the for the body to feel like

It’s pointing left because it should right you’re you’re standing actually parallel to your target line if you’re someone that sets up to the right with the feet the other big mistake I see oh they say oh I’m I’m aiming too far to the right so they actually move one foot

Either further forward or further back to ch to change their feet line but that’s totally wrong because that will really affect your ball position I’m going to give you guys a point of view reference now on how changing like how like if you were to move your foot up

And back how that’ll change or drastically change your ball position and I’ll show you guys how to actually change or Orient yourself correctly around the ball okay so let’s just say you kind of aiming too far to the right with your feet like this okay and then someone says oh I’m

Aiming too far right so they pull their left foot back so if I put this on the ground okay and I’ll show uh a point of view reference for this okay and I’ll get another alignment stick and I’ll put another alignment stick that’s kind of perpendicular to the line of my feet

Okay so right now my ball position is perfect okay but as soon as I pull this left foot back just straight back now relative to my my feet line my ball position has moved significantly further back in my stance without me actually realizing it that’s not only going to affect your

Ability to strike the ball in the right place but it’ll affect path potentially right things like that okay now the reverse is some people will change their Trail foot they’ll they’ll pull this foot back or go forward so if I pull this right foot back to aim more right

Or something like this then my ball Position will move significantly more forward so that’s going to make you swing it even more over the top and more left because your ball position’s really really far forward it’s important to note that since the ball is in one spot

It’s not simply just changing right foot forward or back or left foot forward or back you have to orient yourself around the golf ball okay so if I want to aim more left I’m going around the golf ball in an arc if I want to aim more right

I’m going around the golf ball in front of it like this so that’ll ensure that everything is oriented around the golf ball to the left this way so that you don’t change or adjust your ball position and and almost nobody knows that and this is so important alignment in itself is a skill

I hope you guys can see the the point of view reference I I’ll do it slowly I’ll kind of line up perfectly uh with a perfect setup first um and then I’ll just kind of show you guys the effect of just moving your one foot kind of

Forward or back how it changed your ball position just for this example uh I’m just putting the the the target line parallel to my feet okay and I’m just going to show you how significantly um just pulling your your one foot back or forward can actually affect not only your alignment relative

To the Target line but also your ball position okay so right now I have everything pretty good so my my ball position is just slightly left of center if you want to aim more to the right if I just pull my right foot back now now relative to where my feet are right

My ball position has moved significantly further forward okay you can kind of see that it’s like almost like driver ball position at this point and you can see how the lines are like kind of screwed up here this is this is actually the visual um of how most players align

Themselves outside so their feet are aiming more to the right relative to the Target line and their ball position is typically too far forward at the same time so that’s going to influence you to swing across your body lines or across the target line across your feet because

The target Line’s like across your body and because the ball position is more forward in your stance that’ll also encourage you to swing more degrees across it to the left so now if I did the opposite let me just set this back this is back to parallel now so if I if

I pull my left foot back okay if I just pull it back a little bit like this now relative to where where my feet are right the ball positions way too far back in my stance so that’s going to affect you know your ability to hit the

Ground in the right spot it’ll affect how high the ball can launch everything it your entire orientation of where the target line is uh is off so now you can no longer apply the correct path right you’ll you’ll hit the the ball in the wrong place things

Like that there so this is how significant your alignment and setup is on the go on the golf course if you can’t do this this fundamental thing on the course you’ll just be in this kind of endless loop of striping it really good in the range and hitting it

Absolutely terrible on the course because you’re set up ball position everything is so different on the Range versus on the course again one more thing from the point of view reference just to show you guys how to actually change your alignment if you want to aim

More left or right okay so um with my feet at the moment I I’ve just lined up my feet parallel to the mat so I’m just going to show you guys if I want to aim left basically align myself with this target line uh with the alignment sticks

Remember you don’t just pull your right foot back or forward or your left foot forward or back you have to actually Orient yourself around the golf ball so now I’m actually aiming more left okay but you can see that I’ve actually moved myself around the ball at the same time

So now I can like aim everything left everything’s parallel more left of the of the mat but I’ve kept my ball position the same kind of was just slightly left of center I’ve started here okay kind of parallel with the mat and if I want to aim left I’m aiming I’m

Kind of moving everything orienting myself to the left so that I can keep my my ball position the same so it’s the same thing if I want to aim more to the right okay so I if I want to aim more to the right I just kind of move on this

Side of the ball to aim more right okay if I a more left I move around it to this side nobody really knows this like I’ve asked everyone and nobody realizes this and this is so important and I can’t stress this enough it’s the most this is why this is the most under

Practiced skill in in golf and it’s it has nothing to do with technique and this is a much easier fix to kind of change your own perception of of how you’re aiming so that you can set up the same way every time and only then can

You start to apply the correct path can you start to give yourself the right feedback on the course everything like that a really great exercise that I used to do all the time before the season started um just to get my orientation correct is I would just put any object

In front and in this case I just have like these plastic T’s I just threw them on the ground you don’t have to like place them you know in line with any Target or something like that but you’re going to use those objects as reference it kind of in line with whatever Target

That you’re aiming at so in this case I put those objects there again I’m just going to try to aim at this golf ball right here and the exercise you can you can do this at home right you just put the ball on the ground on the carpet

Some coins or whatever in front and then just aim at certain things in your house that that’s that’s okay so if I was aiming at that ball I’m choosing a spot referencing one of those objects to me it kind of looks like it’s maybe just left of this uh marker right here okay

So once I have my spot picked out the first thing I would do is I would aim the I would try to aim the club face at that spot kind of right in there and then what I do what I like to do is I I

Just kind of like to to just put my feet together and I try to orient my body kind of parallel to the to the line as best as I can and then I just look at my toes and I just spread it out straight and when I’m spreading it out I I kind

Of am conscious with a ball position let’s just say you did this exercise and then you did it incorrect so you were kind of orienting your feet like this so what you do is after you think you’re lined up you put your Club along your toe line like this okay

You stand behind it it and you just grab another club or some alignment stick and you just put it parallel right behind the ball okay so this this is pretty much uh parallel with my feet line so in this case you can see that I was aimed

Over here too far right okay so that that way you can give yourself feedback on like where you’re actually aimed okay so if you did make a mistake what you have to do is you have to first make sure that you’re aimed correctly first so you aim it right at

That ball and then you make the feet line parallel just kind of like that and then you practice setting up to it make sure your ball position is correct okay and you put the club down and then you just look at the Target you got to always look at the Target because

It’s going to feel like your your body is aiming a lot more left than usual again once you once you’ve adjusted and you’ve kind of feel like you know what to adjust then you just choose a different Target and you keep doing this process over and over until you can

Actually Orient yourself correctly okay now if you are aiming too far all right remember don’t pull one foot back all right you got to orient yourself around the golf ball to aim more left okay if you’re aiming too far left you got to orient yourself around the golf ball

This way you you’ll be shocked I think a lot of you if you try this drill out I think a lot of you’ll be really surprised with how far right you’re aiming as a right-handed player you’ll probably aim really far left if you’re left-handed player if you can do this

For 10 minutes a day and line up yourself correctly say you know three times in a row right if you do this over a period of time and you you kind of get your eyes corrected with where the target line should be and you can apply this on the

Course and only then are you going to start to apply the things that you learn in a lesson a lot of players of mine if if I can get them lined up correctly outside their misses aren’t nearly as bad as what they do on their own so this

  1. Most amatereus doesn't realise how foot orientation in contrast to your upper body affect club path. Very often they move right foot back when trying to hit draw thinking it makes them hit more from inside out when it just opposite. Then they hit just push or big slice. I myself always think how ball is positioned relatively to my upper body and then move my feet accordingly to what ever shot shape I want to hit.

  6. Absolutely great video. I have always had a hard time lining up correctly on a dog leg especially dog leg left. I always seem to miss it right and when I check myself it was exactly where I was aiming.

  8. Candidly I'm shocked how little I consider my alignment on the course. I do align myself, but don't double check it. Before my last round I killed it on the range only to have wheels come off on the course and never considered it could have something to do with alignment. Thanks

I started to video my trackman sessions and trying to swing from inside thought aiming right would cure me. not the case… I see the cast and I see the club path and basically trying to fool trackman with club path numbers. excellent video and very pertinent information. bravo

  12. I don't know how many times after I hit a shot my golf partner will say that I was lined up way left or right of my target! Actually I have been thinking about this a lot. When I was marking my ball with a line for putting, I started wondering if when I tee off I should aim the line to the target & then line up to the line. Does that make any sense? I also use a closed stance & it seems like you are saying that this could cause problems with alignment too. So should we avoid open or closed stances?

  14. Hi Jonathan, really informative and revealing video. Someone else raised the matter of attempting to draw the ball (right handed). Perhaps you can address this in a future video.  

    It seems that, in attempting to draw the ball right to left, golfers (right-handed) often move their right foot back to encourage a swing path out to the right while their body (shoulders, hips, etc.) remains aligned to the target. It would seem that using this right foot back slightly may result in the teed-up ball positioned more forward in our stance that can produce pull/hooks or other misaligned strikes. Your thoughts? Thanks!
