I’m often asked by pupils how long should my back swing be there’s an old myth going around at the top of the Swing the club should be parallel to the Target line and pointing down the Fairway well that may be true with a driver but for someone like John

Daly they go even further I’m not recommending that but they make it work so what is it that judges or determines how far we go back well it’s the length of the club here’s the driver six on in the middle and sand iron so you’ll find

That my posture with the driver my body angle is fairly upright this will be my longest back swing I can get the Club close to horizontal however if I then go to a six AR swing shter club feed a bit closer together the same shoulder turn is restricted to about that

Far thirdly with the sandar even shorter again the same shoulder turn only goes to there if I Turn To Face you you might be surprised to see that my wrist and form rotation and shoulder turn the club is only just beyond vertical so it’s a rule of thumb it’s

Not exact science because all different physically but if you want to know how far you backing should be for any given Club try this threee hinge drill hinge your wrists rotate your forearms and turn your shoulder that’s where a wed your stand down should be in a full

Swing that same s with the six iron will go further and the same drill with the driver will go further still now you don’t have to worry about it if your pre-shot routine is good and the left shoulder hits the throat then automatically you’re going to have the

Length of the back swing that you need for that club and for that particular shot
