Watch my reaction video analysis on a senior golfer taking a great lesson from @TopSpeedGolf Quinton Patterson. The lesson was focused on fixing an early extension golf swing fault but I added in my assessment of the golfer’s posture and body mechanics.

You’ll learn why posture is the most important ability that every golfer, especially senior golfers must improve and maintain to play their best golf safely. The featured golf performance drills that older golfers can add into their practice routines are:

Levator Scapulae stretch
Head rotation
Thoracic Mobilization

These drills help balance the 3 amigos of posture, which are the head, ribcage and pelvis. When older golfers can improve movement between the 3 amigos of golf posture, they can boost their performance with better golf swing mechanics and clubhead speed.

So the problem here that he’s trying to fix in this golfer is that he said early extension meaning meaning that he is coming out of his stance on the downswing instead of holding swing plane let’s go to the right here and just look at this gentleman’s setup the first

Thing that I have all my golfers do is this position right here I’m looking at their setup because the setup is going to determine I can already see what’s going to happen in their golf swing at some point just by looking at their setup because the setup is the truth the

Setup is confession the setup is going to tell me what his postural situation is you see the head position already neck muscles are essentially relaxed or or they’re engaged but they’re not overly tense you can see that his chin is down the head is in neutral even at the address position which is

Essentially a hip hinge slight Bend position now I’m going to go back to this gentleman so now look at this gentleman’s head so we already know that this gentleman has a longstanding imbalance in his head and as we know the head wins so if the head is compromised

We already know that everything below the head is going to be compromised it looks like he has a rigid kyphosis even at the address position for him to maximize his back swing in this already preotic position there has to be a compensation pattern going on somewhere

In the chain now if he focused on fixing his head posture and t-spine alone everything everything else down the chain will probably start to behave The Three Amigos of posture is the head the rib cage and the hips so even just doing the stretches that are in the head

Control section of the triple thre golf swing system I guarantee you this gentleman will improve his accuracy and even his power dramatically without even doing any strength training the muscles in his neck are like they look like they’re hanging on for dear life to hold his head forward for every centimeter

That the head moves forward of neutral you you’re adding about 10 lbs of load so I’m thinking this gentleman before bending over he looks he may have8 or 9 cmet of forehead posture and then when you add that to bending over to the address position you’re probably going

To 10x that so the amount of for and the amount of dysfunctional load that’s going on through this gentleman’s head is astronomical and this is before swinging the golf club when you add in the forces generated swinging a golf club which we know through research that the forces that are generated while

Swinging a golf club are strong enough to fracture human vertebrae you can see where at a neurological level his whole body and nervous system is freaking out if he can clear these physical obstacles in his golf swing and they’re quite easy and even with some mild stretching

Before he starts his practice in the matter of two to four weeks he’ll start to see dramatic improvements not only in his posture but obviously in his golf performance this is because of My Three Amigos philosophy meaning that he has two of The Three Amigos already compromised with the forward head

Posture and the lack of being able to extend through that t-spine which is controlled by the rib cage you even see it here when he starts to exert Force you see how that forward head posture he may even have a neck injury I wouldn’t be surp surprised if he has some type of

Pre-existing neck injury just because of the way that those muscles look leathery and rigid and he looks like he’s just been there for a while we want to make sure he’s doing it as safely as possible but also performing at the highest levels we’re looking at you know head

Head side side Bend we’re looking at stretching out those suboccipitals we want to strengthen the muscles in his what we call his submandibular sling we want to stretch the muscles at the at the oxy put and we need to actually strengthen the muscles in what we call the submandibular sling those are the

Muscles underneath the jaw and the neck there that’s the Walling exercise that’s in the balance section of the program combined with that stretch and combined with some t-spine mobilization which is in the shoulder turn section and he’ll be good to go no problem let’s let this

Run and when you look at the better players they’re going to maintain contact with that line if you can’t control your rib cage especially during the downswing it’s going to be very hard to control the hips because the rib cage and the hips and the head are all

Connected this is the Three Amigos of posture all three of those friends all three of those body segments have to be exquisitly in sync the orchestra has to play together um it’s good for him it’s good that he’s getting aware of what he needs to do

But if his body is still not wanting to comply because of physical limitation it’s going to take a little bit longer for that software that this golf teaching pro is trying to download it’s going to take it longer for that lesson to download so getting that t-spine loose with the with some towel

Mobilizations I wouldn’t even this this gentleman I would not even throw him on a foam well I would throw him on a foam roller but longitudinally but the the horizontal drape I would not bring it across his back it would hurt him too much

Um yeah he would need to be on a foam roller or a a soft towel for a couple of weeks but I guarantee you he’ll start to loosen up if you have this gentleman has any as or an anky losing spondy losis then you wouldn’t you would be very

Cautious with it but um since he swinging the golf club I’m thinking he might not be but he can definitely improve this Mobility somehow in this t-spine which will translate into huge improvements and accuracy and power because he’ll be able able to make a better shoulder turn which will increase

Club head speed and um reduce reduce likelihood of injury um even in this posture he’s still going to be open to injury especially if he is fatigued which he will most likely be because he’s still swinging this club with huge compensation patterns if I would have been there or if he would

Have known how to do these stretches I promise you he would have gotten that result at the same lesson 100% I’ve seen it too many times do the lesson stretch do the specific drills for 10 15 minutes come back I guarantee you he would have nailed this would have been his this

Would have been his after picture at this lesson on the left I promise you that’s how fast the nervous system can catch on and if and if you’re instructed properly so the right drill done at the right time will produce very very dramatic results very quickly if you

Don’t have good head posture fix it if you do have good head posture maintain it but there is power in doing the corrective stretches it will absolutely carry over to better performance and safer performance so hopefully you guys got some value out of these quick tips if you don’t already have the triple
