Hi guys J Smith here welcome to ask Golf Channel welcome to Muna st230 Max it’s their Max driver it’s their maximum forgiveness maximum m is mizuno’s idea of what we’re going to hear a lot of in 2024 of 10ks and forgiveness this Andi that the head now is made nearly

Entirely of carbon and the weight saving they’ve had from that carbon head they’ve put in a much bigger back weight it’s 40% bigger heavier than the ZX it’s now 54 G but they’ve also changed the size of it so if you look at the footprint of it now it is now wider it’s

Now deeper when it comes to front to back the face out is shallower it’s not quite as tall from sold to Crown it’s not massively different but you can see the slight difference between that and the Zed or X and then it’s also you can

See the footprint we Lo down by the golf ball it is now bigger it’s now maxed out they’ve changed the CeX chain for that blue bit at the bottom they missing piece and that’s now running all the way to the toe and to their quick fit huzzle that’s now dominating the bottom part

That’s now helping much more on low hits on the face again we’ll test that a little bit they’ve changed the face as well it’s now got the same face as their tour model G it’s basically slightly faster some like 9% stronger on its tensile strength which basically means

The fact they can make the face slightly thinner in certain areas so again it’s more forgiving off off center hits and then you have got that slightly longer sha with this new Max because it’s much more stable they’re saying that they can actually push the Sha length to what

Everyone else is at 45 and 3/4 and still gain gain gain right let’s go get the simulator on let’s go whack it into a green let’s go for a driveable par 4 for a bit of fun and let’s go see how the SD 230 Max really gets on simulator now on

We are at Glen for Golf Course ho 9 it’s a par four of 300 yards it’s a drivable Par Four you wouldn’t drive it because you’ve got too much trouble up near the green you have got got bunkers left and right that’s good because that means anything in the bunker I’m happy and

Even short right I’m happy with but you’ve got trees and if you miss too far left you’ve got then chip over the bunker bad idea what would be normally doing would be hit a six line straight down the Fairway and after 120 or so yards in that would be the sensible way

But no this is YouTube St Max so this basically looks like a fat version of the standard Z or X or Zed to anywhere you are in the world you can see the difference when it comes to the size of it it is definitely bigger than the Zed

You’ve got that CCH chamber which is bigger you’ve got the amount of carbon on that sole which you can distinctly see is more than the z z x which allows for that bigger back weight but then the big difference is when you put this down

By the golf ball and you can see it’s stretched back it’s bigger you can see that blue lipstick line around the back there which denotes it’s the max but it basically just looks like a big Z right let’s go give us a hit into the green

And see if we can get somewhere near the green hitting Target on here would be brilliant well I’m testing Miss hits out already that is squarely on the toe that’s squarely middle stump yep that’s a mishit as you can see 22 mm toe good delivery so the delivery

Was good it was just how we say yeah that’s a rare one for me wowers but it’s finished four yards offline so effectively what that gear effect of the driver its face its job is to if you miss the middle which we all do some more than others but when you hit the

Toe or the heel or high or low it sends the golf ball on a slightly different direction then curves it back that’s the whole idea of gear effect so hit off the toe it starts right and draws back and if hit off the heel it starts left and

Cuts back and no different high and low as well but I mean I’ll be doing all the forgiv foress testing might even add that one in there um but I’ll be doing the fif full forgiveness testing of the complete all around the face not just 22

Mm to that was horrific but it done very very well efficiency is 1.43 from that hit wowers right let’s have another go let’s see if we can actually do a better job that’s my normal there you go little baby fade that might Munch a little bit of the green that’s going to that’s

Carry on to it yeah that’s good oh don’t go in the it’s in The Fringe that’s fine path and face slightly across little fadey still toey 10 mil toe um but that is two4 spin which is not bad considering I am cutting the golf ball

Uh 37 yards in the air under 40° to Center angle so that is still going to be wanting to chase down the green if when it lands on The Fairway rather than the green but 10 m toe that is still not middle I think you’d agree and 1.44

Efficiency is doing well you’ll get 1.46 maybe if everything goes well you might get a 1.47 on a camera based system so a 1.44 from tow 10 mil toe and then the previous one 22 mil toe 1.43 is mighty impressive but you’ll take that that is on the green and everyone is

Happy let’s see if we can do another one of them no that’s right I knew as soon as I hit that my face was open that’s the place to miss it 9 M toe 2 m high and my face there you go 4° open that’s too much for my normal fade

That’s turning into a little bit of a buy wave to it as it goes past um let’s go give it a hit more let’s um release the old girl a bit more and then see if we can get that going straighter that’s definitely face is squarer that’s left head bunker that’s going straight

Into the bunker oh take that all day long that’s literally just off the left edge face was better path was not strike was 11 mil toe 9 mil high that again is not middle but that’s doing really well that’s carrying 280 on there 285 on quad here now this is in the 9

And 1 half head and I have got it standing if I was going to try and bomb this one I’d stick this down to 7 and 1 half and launch it but that’s not the idea now I’m going to be doing different speed testing with this one again I’ll be

Doing my normal speed is and then doing medium speed and slow speed I’m not quite sure anyone else is going to be doing that kind of testing to see how well this works obviously these come in three different lofted heads for three completely different uh golfers same one again that’s me

Launching it a bit more that’s going to possibly take that bunker and go on get the bunker go and get the bunker perfect it’s really good it’s really good 276 282 on quad you take that all day long of course I’m now swinging at 111 mph

And wow look at that 16 mil toe five high I think you’d agree that is not middle at all 1.43 efficiency this Max is very shall we say helpful when you don’t hit the middle or not even close that’s 21 MIM gross from the middle and it’s done

That I I play the Z Zed wherever you are in the world I honestly think I might move over to the max cuz it’s just so much more helpful I just you can get away with you won’t get away with that one with the Z the Z is just a little

Bit more sensitive this Umi number is around up to the high nines it’s not 10K but it’s close when it comes to the standard Z I think that’s 82,000 something like that that’s more like the standard old school tailor Maids we say old school anything up until this year

Right let’s give give it one more go see if we can get on the green that is nowhere near Middle that’s horrific that’s so that’s just hilarious look at that that is horrific and it’s on the Green Path across face open my classic normal but look at that 26 mm

Toe 10 mil High AKA 36 mm gross off the middle that is not even close 266 on there 271 on COD because we’re hitting uphill um from there now efficiency is 1.37 it has dropped a bit however we are 36 mm away from the middle

Wow uh good drive of this if you miss the face a little bit and you’re not the greatest of Strikers there you go the St Max wow I haven’t hit such a bad shot on camera for a while and I’m kind of glad I did it with that right let’s go give

This a hit all over the face not just high toe let’s get some heels some lows and all those lovelies in there and then also let’s just do some normal testing at different speeds a slow speed a medium speed and a fast speed to see how

Good the St Max really is right so let’s go see how the SD 230 Max got on when you hit it all over the face not just off the toe I’m having a bad day today when it comes to swinging but I suppose on days today if you’re going to have a

Bad day is a good idea to have a Max driver in your hands because at least you get a chance to see how well it works or it doesn’t so I’ve got the information up on the screen here for all different swing speeds so I’ve got

An 8 85 mph swing 95 mph swing and 108 to try and Encompass as many golfers as possible and then we’ll look at the Forgiveness as well cuz obviously we’ve seen how well it works off the toe let’s go see how it works off other parts of

The face as well so you can see there you’ve got all the yellow blue and red you got the yellow slow blue medium and red fast you can see 125 uh mph 137 mph 156 mph 4 the relative now the only thing I would say when it comes to the

Differences here on the launch angle you’ve got 13.2 on launch for the fast now that is the max at 92° for the other two I did put it up to 11 half degre to as much loft as I possibly could get now I will say this when it comes to the

Yellow because we’re looking at launching at 14° and spinning at 1700 I would put in the higher lofted head absolutely for the slower swing speed and then possibly do a similar thing with the medium swing speed but then either move the Loft with your Loft sleeve because you got 4 degrees of

Adjustment on that and so trying to dial in the spin rate because effectively 1,700 RPM on a slow swing speed is not enough to keep it up into the air when you m hit it high on the face and so it will be fine out the middle but it’s

Borderline I’d much rather go to a spin profile all around 2,000 to 22 on all of them and then you might even squeeze a bit more distance cuz 204 yards 235 yards and 273 yards carry is not bad whatsoever and of course you got the associated R because Peak Heights are 21

Yards 28 yards and 36 yards and then descent angle is 29° with a slow swing because we’re going in like ballistic missile trajectory which on an iron is terrible on a driver is lovely the sh well I say the shallower but the more carry you can get with a shallower uh

Descent angle you’re going to get more bounce bounce and roll and that’s going to include into more total distance you’re get 30 yards in roll out and bounce and roll out on the slow swing 29 and then depending on if you hit the green or not I think I set the green out

There to 300 so is not buun bad when it comes to the fast one as well so you got the club head speeds on there you 85 mph 95 mph basically 108 efficienc is 1.46 1.45 1.45 so very good attack angles within less than a degree Club half is

Within less than like4 of a degree face is within2 of a degree all the deliveries and Loft there’s point4 of a degree difference in Loft remember guys even I’ve adjusted up uh the slower swings as such to its maximum up 2° there’s a huge difference in speed between these so my

Handle deliver is going to change slightly again um I would definitely definitely go up to the higher lofted heads remember Muno do them in not just one head you can see up on the screen I’ll pop on the screen they exactly what they do because they have obviously this

In the uh left-handed option as well in the 9 and a half head that I’ve got but they make other ones for slower swing golfers and then you can see the strike on there as well I’m a’t going to go too much uh detail right let’s go um and

Have a look at how what it did out the middle and then also I’ve captured some slow uh Mish hits and also some rather interesting ones around the face to see how well it does you can see one out the screws here within 3 mm low I’ve got a

1.46 there is a possibility that you might get a 1.47 on the occasion but it’s not yet every duck has to be in order to get a 1.47 on camera base system but it’s going 267 from 106 mph um Club head speed 22 spin it’s just doing really quite well finishing at 292

From 106 mph swing speed is blooming good if you go now crazy 17 mil heel 9 mil high on a golf club high heel is horrid generally 1.40 efficiency that is mighty impressive cuz generally speaking anywhere high heel on a golf club is dead and low heel no different it is

Just a hateful place to hit a 1.40 that high heel 26 mm away gross and middle is very very good you’ve got one hand down here 13 low 7 heel 1.42 it’s going the direction I asked it to cuz my face is open to a path and of

Course I’m telling it to go right and it did but it’s still doing really well on the efficiencies 1.42 is exceptionally good again that’s all well into the ctech chamber area that is if you just go low on the face 9 mil low it’s just a nominal low hit he launching slightly

Lower at 12.9 De and spinning slightly up but that’s what gear effect does and the fact that it’s got a 1.44 efficiency 1.44 is very very I mean this it’s a forgiving head it is definitely a forgiving 11 mil low 7 mil toe just a a

Slight low toe hit very low but also toe 1.44 again launching slightly lower spinning slightly more it’s hitting Target get 1.7 yards offline at 287 it’s doing good 1.44 from not middle is very very good so we got one here basically 14 mm gross off the middle

Just a normal toe shot I’m hitting toe well today anyway you saw on camera um 1.44 again now it’s basically doing exactly what I asked it to my face is slightly open to a path I’m telling it to fade and just slightly fade off Target and it’s basically doing that

It’s 13.9 yards off Target it’s basically Fairway and it’s 1.44 efficiency good 11 mil High 11 mil toe a standard normal high toe shots 1.42 efficiency now that’s 22 mm gross off the middle and we’re moving around the face a lot and that is losing 0.04 from basically perfect it’s just

Doing well you got the next one here 14 millim High 24 mm toe that 38 mm off the middle yes we are now down to 1.38 but from 38 mm away Gross Middle that is mighty mighty impressive the only thing I would say about the st230

Max is that on tow strikes sometimes it has a tendency to slightly overgear now that’s missed 20 yards left again that is very very very off the- middle um my face Dynamics basically told it to hit Target and effectively that’s just overgeared slightly to the left hand

Side 20 yards left is boardline left edge of Fairway if not the first little bit of rough after that strike if you hit that strike and you ended up left hand side a fairway or even just in the left hand side rough you’re easily finding that and you would be counting

Your lucky stars that you can find it after hitting one from there talking about some ones from there here we go for a bit of fun 39 mm toe 4 mil High 43 mm off of middle 43 that has to be one of my biggest for fun misses owe any more of

This and you possibly would tow shank it and it would yeah but not it’s okay we’ve dropped a fair bit of um efficiency 1.38 this is a slower swing speed as well 85 mph um but uh it’s missing seven yards off Target it has started 7° right and actually in back I

Cannot believe that this golf club can be that forgiven that you can hit it 43 mm away from that middle if you’d have done this with a Z with a slightly smaller profile from toe to heel this one’s a little bit wider you would be toe shanking this and this is going off

At a 40° angle the fact that this has made contact and it’s actually geared back properly is just wow and then we’ve got one here the final one here when I decide to to dial it up a little bit this is my normal kind of shot when you

Want to hit it and hit it properly um this is still at 9 and 1/ 12° this is not me sticking it down to 7 and a half and that’s what I would do if I wanted to really get the distance up because that’s when I could then try and hit up

As much as I can at it and obviously launch it high low spin that idea but it’s going 289 carry 313 total and 1.44 efficiency 7 mil Toe 3 mil High I’ve got the slight toes today as you saw on camera but it’s just mighty mighty good

You can it out the middle you can hit it anywhere on the face and it basically does this it within reason with the slight exception of the tow ones have a tendency to overgear to the left hand side a fraction I mean it’s not a lot um

It basically goes where you tell it if you’re going to deliver your face five or 10 open or closed to a path that’s where the ball’s going the club does not know where Target is it only knows where you’re pointing it but one thing as golf

Club does do if you put a half decent swing at it if you do a half decent job of getting your face somewhere close to where you want that ball to finish and you just m hit it there you go let the club do the work this honestly is much

More down the route of what Ping used to do ping used to say this quite openly the fact that they don’t they don’t want to be the longest they don’t want to be the most peaky manufacturer they don’t want to be focusing on that one shot out

Of 50 that you hit monster they want to be the longest overall when you include all the misses that you hit and and this st230 Max is much much more down the Ping route of their 10K idea of being the ultimate forgiveness machine but also a manageable spin profile and so I

Would say because of the fact that it comes in three different lofted heads and you’ve got that adjustability as well and it remember when you do adjust the hosle it does have a tendency to move the head as well but that does give you so much options for a fitter to make

Sure we can dial you into a head properly when it comes to a good customer fit that the options that this 230 Max gives now for golfers that need maximum forgiveness when they’re not hitting it well is just impressive to say the least hope you like the video if

You did thumbs up go on YouTube like so do I down there it’s a subscribe button it’s free and it’s great for the channel if you could subscribe so thank you and next to that is a bell icon that’s a notification Bell if you click that one

  1. Great content as always Jay. I currently play the old classic St 190 and was wondering if the quick change sleeve is the same on the max as the190. I do love my shaft on the190 and would just buy the Max head and use my current shaft…….. Thanks again !

  2. Great review, I am really tempted to go try this out when I can. I currently play a Mizuno GT180 from 2018, do you think that upgrading to this would be noticeably more forgiving on miss hits?

Also, does it use the same adapter as the GT180? It would be nice to keep my shafts (Fujikura SIX XLR8 X-flex and Fujikura Orochi 65g x-flex).

  3. I read stock shafts are 3/4 inch longer than last years models. You loved the forgiveness of the 230 x, worth the upgrade?

  4. Great video. I have 90mph swing speed, would you say 10.5 ST Max would fit? I tested the STZ 230 with Aldilia Ascent Red 50 and it was quite straight.

  5. Is there a review on the mizuno platinum version..love watching jay-from the land down under Australia 🇦🇺

  6. Guessing you already have your list of comparison vids planned, or filmed, but hoping you might do a ST-Z vs ST-Max. I know you mentioned a few likely results from shots in this vid had you been using a Z, but would be curious to see a same day head to head.

  7. I’m enjoying the progress of Mizuno drivers. Fell in love with them since my 1st ST 190 driver I got fit for. I’m still excited about my recent fitting/purchase of my shiny new STZ 230, can’t wait to get it outside! Thanks Jay! Great stuff!

  8. It's looking more and more like this is going to be my choice, but I'm in a quandary about clubs between driver and 5i, currently I've got 3wd, 5wd and 4hybrid, but I'm wondering if I'd need the same with the new Mizuno??

  9. Now that you be tested so many new drivers, is there anyone that truly stands out. I was leaning to the qi10

  10. So Mizuno have killed off any sales of the X and Zee (depending on where you are in the world) just as Ping have ruined sales of their Max with the 10k

  11. Sorry for another question. I struggle with too high spin like big time, which led me to the X and Z versions that work well for me. Is the Max a much higher spinning driver than the Z/X? Or no need to worry? Thx.

  12. Would I be correct in assuming that lowering the loft to 7.5* (and subsequently opening the face in the process) would help counteract the "over-gearing" to the left on toe strikes? Cheers
