GET UP | “Bears should draft Caleb Williams for pick #1” – Mel Kiper Jr. take Caleb & trade Justin Fields

We’ve been on this morning coming out of last night’s game including whether or not Jim Harbaugh will move to the NFL the one thing we know for certain is that the two quarterbacks in last night’s game look to have Futures in the NFL and Mel Kyper has the two of them in

His top five draft available quarterbacks this year you see the big two up at the top with Caleb Williams and Drake May Jaden Daniels then Michael Pennock he’s got him in the top 10 and JJ McCarthy later in the first round let’s bring Mel Kyper into the

Conversation for the first time Buy here it is good to see Mel and Joey Galloway with us as well Mel let’s go through it cuz a lot of us are watching these games and we’re thinking about these Saturday players on Sundays take me through penx who had a very tough night last night

And McCarthy who didn’t have to do a lot last night take me through their transition to the NFL it’s been a case with JJ McCarthy ear the last couple years not having to carry that football team on his shoulders that’s a run oriented team obviously the o line outstanding even

Without Zach zenter their best offense lineman Al the Ohio State game with the injury think about JJ McCarthy 25 or fewer pass attempts in 10 games this year last 12 games though only one interception so he stays away from that we remember the TCU game last year with

The two pick sixes but overall his game management has been excellent he just has not had that wow game that wow performance that says I’m defined as a first round pick he hasn’t had that yet Michael penx Jr has had those games the Texas game semi-in he looked like a top

Five pick in the first round last night he looked like a fifth round pick so you can’t worry about one game it’s the body of work at Indiana he was 12 and5 as a starter certainly what he did at Washington the last two years was extraordinary he showed the last two

Years he could stay healthy he needed to go back for this season two years two full years healthy after all those injuries over that four-year career at Indiana Michael penx Jr I still think will be in the middle of the first round JJ McCarthy borderline first round pick

Yeah for those who don’t know Michael panck had two knee surgeries two acl’s at one point in his career but as Mel said had has been healthy since Joey what do you think I I think when you go with Mel you you feel like you want to talk really

Fast I gota like remember I got speak of my own pace here my my mind was racing um so I I think when you look at when you look at McCarthy uh I think Mel’s right we just haven’t seen him have to be that quarterback that carries a

Football team and when you draft these quarterbacks this high you’re drafting them think they’re going to come in and carry your football team not just hand it up not just lean On The Run game as much as McCarthy did very talented a great athlete and he has the arm now the

Other part I don’t know if he knows how to run an offense that might be pass heavy pennick as you watch him through the season I agree with him M you just can’t take last night’s game uh you banged up I think the arm strength is there he’s been great going down the

Field all season long uh but he was banged up in the second half of the season and that’s sort of the concern with a quarterback that is that is Slim that is skinny is can they last an entire NFL season an an entire NFL career yeah a Jim Harbaugh has been

Raving about JJ McCarthy for those who didn’t see his quotes last week he said McCarthy is the best quarterback in Michigan history and that of course includes a guy by the name of Tom Brady who was not a superstar in college to which he was a sixth round pick now

There’s another thing Mel in particular I wanted to get you on and Joey you’ll be fascinating on this as well as an Ohio State guy the New England Patriots are going to be picking thir thir in this year’s NFL Draft which is the highest they’ve selected since they took

Drew bledo in 1993 the commanders are picking second but courtesy of a trade with Carolina the Chicago Bears are picking first and that presents a fascinating question in Chicago they have Justin Fields there he has shown signs but certainly only signs he has certainly not demonstrated with certainty he is a franchise NFL

Quarterback back there’s always question marks no matter how highly touted a prospect is so Mel I’ll start with you because I always say you invented the NFL draft if if you’re sitting in Chicago’s seat right now are you trading away that first pick and keeping Justin fields or are you taking Caleb

Williams gry I’m going back and forth with us on almost a daily basis and I thought about it last night in this morning I’m back to Caleb I’m back to Caleb Williams today real time because of this people say well you stay with the known over the unknown a known being

Justin Fields but they’re all unknown Justin Fields is an unknown whether he can be a franchise quarterback Caleb Williams this year if you say well he struggled well yeah from the Arizona game on he wasn’t phenomenal but hey this kid doesn’t throw interceptions he had a higher completion percentage this

Year they did last year when he was off the charts great 93 touchdowns he was responsible for the last two years includes 21 rushing touchdowns 10 interceptions to me that’s a chance for a grand slam home run at the worst maybe triple as opposed to maybe a double for

Justin Fields who I had as the second highest rated quarterback when he came out behind Trevor so I like Justin Fields but if you can get the eighth pick from Atlanta in a trade and and draft Caleb Williams uh then I think you’re setting yourself up very well for

The future so as we speak right now if I’m the Bears I’m taking Caleb Williams number one overall and trading Justin Fields quickly melon you and I will be together a lot between now and Detroit at the end of April but I I I hear the

Name Drake May a lot and I think for the fans who were asking by the time this process is through do you believe there will be teams in the NFL that have Drake may actually qb1 in this class ahead of Caleb Williams no I do not I think the battle

Is going to be that second spot between Jaden Daniels LSU and Drake May Drake May did not have a great year now he had a new coordinator he had new receivers and TZ Walker was but because of the NCA wasn’t able to play right away and you

Think about those that Virginia game the NC State game for Drake May there were some throws he needed to make he did not complete those passes and did not look great in those games so Jaden Daniels had that spectacular year as the Ultimate dual threat quarterback I think

The battle was for the qb2 between May and Daniels not qb1 which I think is locked in to Caleb Williams despite people saying well that Notre D Notre Ang is one game he threw three picks it didn’t look good at night at South bent it’s one game that’s it the rest of his

Career for the most part he was phenomenal like I said that could be a home run Grand Slam as opposed to a and in the NFL if you can hit that home run and get that grand slam uh you’re set up for a long time so I would roll the dice

On that potential that Caleb Williams has displayed he say 93 touchdowns 10 interceptions last two years includes those rushing touchdowns boy has he been outstanding when he’s on his game Joey let me come to you again as an Ohio State guy so you know you’ve known

Justin Fields an awful long time and and seen his game as it has developed what do you think of this huge question in Chicago um I would I think we move on from from quarterbacks too soon I think we expect him to come in and and be

Really successful early on and I think that has sort of changed over the years guys used to get a little bit more time to learn the game and I also think that we’re taking quarterbacks and asking them to do things that they didn’t do in college so to as Mel saying go with

Caleb Williams uh Caleb Williams is a playmaker he’s a really good quarterback but he’s not an ontime quarterback he is not a guy that stands in the pocket makes plays and so I’m not saying he won’t be successful what I’m saying is if you’re taking Caleb Williams you have

To have a system or be ready for a system where he’s going to run around and make plays he’s a terrific quarterback if it’s me I’m giving Justin Fields more time I think they’re similar actually I think both of them are very athletic uh both of them uh came from

Systems where they weren’t always on time getting the ball out more of a playmaking situation so you have to have a coordinator uh offensive system Playmakers around them that are used to that kind of quarterback for these guys to be successful so so graziana when when I’ve had Kimberly Martin here last

Week I asked her about this and she said that anytime we talk about this she is besieged with texts from people inside the league Personnel people saying you guys are crazy they have to start the clock again well this isn’t even a conversation now I can tell you from the

Media side this is the most divisive issue they’ve had in Chicago in years people are are are staunch on both sides of this but she tells me people inside the league think it is a no-brainer you start over with the quarterback they do and and then there’s a critical reason

And it’s it’s money right so they may be similar players Justin fields and Caleb Williams but they are not similar in what you have to pay them over the next five years right so it’s not a question of do you keep Justin fields or do you

Move on from him it’s do you pay Justin fields or do you move on from him he’ll be eligible for an extension for the first time this offseason and now you’re thinking about you know are we committing to him long term at a level of like I mean look at what the the

Giants did with Daniel Jones last year right 40 million whereas with Caleb Williams you know exactly what you’re going to have to pay him for the next 5 years it’s not negotiable the first pick in the draft has a number assigned to him you don’t even have to address it

You’re not even allowed to address it for three years uh so I I I do think it is a no-brainer because if you if you identify Caleb Williams as a potentially transformational franchise quarterback prospect then it is absolutely a no-brainer quickly it’s worth pointing out that on one side you’ve got the

Financial Security on the other side you have probably three number ones would get in a trade for that first pick if you wanted to Quick takes guys yeah and in those three number ones you would love to get a quarterback that has as much potential and promise as Caleb

Williams you’ve had three years with Justin fields and I think it’s important to be clear that I don’t think Justin Fields is a bust or a failure he will seem like a bust if they move on from him but I think it’s important to be clear that I think his success or lack

Of success is more a product of what’s happened around him than him but we’re at this point now and it doesn’t matter you get the younger guy the cheaper guy the guy with the higher ceiling which I think we all agree that right now give you what we seen I’m keeping Fields you

Know Joey and I think the same way listen Fields number 67 touchdowns nine interceptions when he was in col everybody’s got great College numbers when you get to the league you got to have something different listen get the guys around him Marvin Harrison Jr those

Type of players with DJ all of a sudden you got a lot of really good team you’re just not asking one guy to change your team listen we are approaching Christmas and he is Santa Claus Mel I’m looking forward to this as we get started on the road to Detroit Joey outstanding this

Morning guys thank you both we’ll have much more on this as we continue by the way we got College oh no know Know for for foreign speech speech for spee fore Spee foree Spee speech speech speee e this soon fore fore foreign speech foreign foree for foree speech Don’t R back okay okay spee spe spee spee foreign foree Spe Not yeah was just with for for

  1. Bears would be stupid to not listen to crazy offer's especially in the top 5. They have a chance to have a division swinging draft this year if they do it right.

  2. This guy is an expert and he thinks Atlanta would give up #8 pick for fields?? 🤡

  3. As a lions fan I’d much rather see the Bears with Caleb Williams, than to see them with Justin Fields and Marvin Harrison Jr, DJ Moore, and Competent Coaching

I'd take Fields and another Panther Fleece deal for #1 pick, possibly #2 as well

Caleb vs. top (ranked) teams doesn't scare me LMAO

but the Bears will screw this up 😂 😂

  4. So say the Bears do draft Caleb Williams, and trade Fields to another team. How is a Rookie going to perform in this current Roster? Fields is not an Elite QB, but he is good enough if you get him an O-line and more weapons, which they can add with their current draft stock. They will not have the stock they need to do the same for Caleb Williams.

  5. Build around Fields, surround him with top draft picks, and not just offensive, beef up that defense. Defense wins Championships

  6. Take Mel out of it. What makes Caleb so great. He cant even win in a conference that plays no defense and gets the best talent outta Cal with a QB friendly offense. Look at Lincoln Riley last 4 QB'S. 3 have won the Heisman none have been good in the pros. Hurts had a decent year last year but the got by with that push shyt. I say stay away

  7. Aren’t these the same people who said Bryce Young was perfect, except too small and won’t hold up, and that Stroud was meh?

  8. With pass rushers and WR making $25M a year, is the QB clock really that important. Are most SBs won by QBs on rookie contracts?

  9. Do the opposite of what Kiper says he is the worst at picking draft choices and has no experience within the NFL Front Offices, as a player or even a water boy, check out some of his picks over the years, he is a FAILURE and an overpaid Talking HEAD on ESPN which is a toilet bowl network. Kieper is a POS and no GM listens to him. Caleb Williams is going to be another Ryan Leaf and look where Kiper put him as a #1, you want a QB JJ Mc is the best on the Draft, then Penix Jr as #2 Williams is at best a second rounder and he does not have the mental fortitude to be a NFL Starter straight out

  10. The Bears should trade out of the first pick even if they trade away Fields. Caleb Williams is not for sure that much better than Daniels, Penix, or McCarthy. No one knows who the best QB will actually be in the end. I want the Bears to get Marvin Harrison Jr. regardless of what they decide to do.

  11. Top5 QBs rarely pan out and its even less who do it yr 1 + CW Paints his nails and seems 2b a Diva no way im giving him millions

  12. The bears are f**** dumb and even if they do get Caleb Williams they're going to literally f*** his head up so bad mentally that he's done. F**** sad Chicago ruins quarterbacks

  13. I've seen enugh of Justin Fields, and for that matter, Coach 'Flus. Bears should hire Harbaugh, draft Williams. Odds against my prediction? 99.99999% against. Bears are chicken when it comes to the fans and what we need.

  14. “He doesn’t throw interceptions” did he not watch usc vs notre dame when he threw 3 ints in the first half

  15. What’s the difference between Justin Herbert and Justin Fields? Because the Chargers have been a disaster! Lmao. But for whatever reason we are 1000 percent sure it’s not the QB

  16. As a life time bears fan that went Rogue….. Bears never had a Qb that can drop back and read a field….. You just got to roll the dice on Caleb or Jayden cause Jayden a drop back passer that so happens to run…. and Caleb the best we,ve seen in years

  17. "caleb is not a guy that stands in the pocket and makes plays" lmfao this dude has no idea.. literally 0

  18. Mel kipper said take Caleb,, cause he doesn't get paid to peddle certain players,, like CALEB!! Riiiiight! You keep him,, he SUUUUUUCKKSSSSSSSSsssss

  19. Newsflash…. Caleb Williams has not announced he was entering the draft yet. So all this noise and the man might stay in school another year. Plus last I checked he hasn’t played one NFL game yet and he is already being put on this pedal-stool like the second coming. Personally I don’t think he wants to go to the Bears can’t say that I blame him. And I’m a Bears fan sad to say. His talent is not the problem for me it’s his maturity and he seems like a diva!!!

  20. —This relentless touting of C J Stroud as an ideal for the Bears to strive to replicate is unrealistic. C J Stroud is the exception, not the rule for 1st year NFL quarterbacks. Caleb Williams is a million miles from a certainty as a star NFL quarterback.
—Quarterbacks overwhelmingly take several years to master their craft and achieve proficiency at the NFL level. If we look at the teams that made the playoffs we can see that their starting quarterbacks have been around the league longer than 3 years—many of them much longer:
    Josh Allan 6
    Lamar Jackson 6
    Joe Flacco 16
    Matt Stafford 8
    Jared Goff 15
Kurt Cousins 11 (Joshua Dobbs 8)
Matt Rudolf 6 (Ben Rothlisberger 16)
    Baker Mayfield 6

Most of these QBs were first round picks but most are not with the teams that drafted them.

—Several teams have had to start 2 or more quarterbacks because of injuries. These include the Vikings, Steelers, Saints, Bengals

—Jake Browning, an undrafted free agent in his 5th year, is Cincinnati Bengals’ QB after Joe Burrows suffered his second season ending injury in his 4 years in the league. Burrows was their 2020 first round pick and is the highest paid player in NFL history.

—-and we see what has happened to the New York Giants with Aaron Rodgers.

—This proves that it is unrealistic to expect one quarterback to be a team’s all in all.

—Ryan Poles stressed the importance of a team’s offensive coaching being effective at utilizing the talents of its quarterback. The obvious implication is that this was lacking with regard to Justin Fields but another reason which he stated explicitly is the frequency of QB injuries around the league.

If your number 1 goes down what do you do ? What would the Texans do if CJ Stroud is injured?

—-And for those who tout CJ Stroud’s winning performance as predictable because he was a first round draft pick what about Brock Purdy’s winning performance with the 49ers. He was the very last player drafted in 2022.

  21. Trade down to 3. Draft Marvin. Take Penix Jr. Sit him for this season. Pay Justin his six million for this year.

  22. No chance JJ ends up in the first round. 140 yards passing in the national championship game. Come on
