You’ve heard it a thousand times… “start the downswing from the ground up.”

And yet there’s a HUGE difference between what your hips actually do to start the downswing… and what it feels like for most golfers.

And so in today’s lesson we’re going to sort it out once and for all with the help of Tommy Fleetwood, owner of one of the best golf swings on tour and this week’s winner at the Dubai Invitational.

Hi I’m Zach, thank you for visiting my channel. My goal here is to help you play the best golf of your life while having as much fun as possible!

I’m a PGA-certified golf instructor and have been coaching since 1997. I’ve been named a Golf Digest “Best Young Teacher,” a GolfTips Magazine “Top 25 Golf Instructor,” and Southern California PGA’s Teacher of the Year. I’ve worked with golfers of all ages and levels, from 4-year-old beginners on up through touring professionals. My students have included nationally-ranked juniors, touring pros, celebrities, and CEOs, but wherever you’re at on your golfing journey, my goal is always the same… to help YOU play your best golf!

I started playing competitive golf at a young age, ultimately reaching #3 in the California junior golf rankings – just behind another promising young golfer named Tiger Woods. I also played collegiate golf at the University of Southern California and professional golf on the Omega Asian Tour.

I work with students in-person at my studio in Valencia, CA, and teach golfers all around the world through my YouTube channel and on my website: ballstrikingblueprint.com. Thanks for stopping by and drop me a comment if you have any questions or would like to get in touch!

Congratulations Tommy Fleetwood win in the Dubai Invitational paired with Rory maroy in the final round Birdie the last couple holes amazing ball striking Rory unfortunately had a couple airs in the water on the back nine and a short three putt from four feet so what can we learn

From Rory right or just Fairway Jesus himself as his you know as he’s his nickname is why does he hit the ball so well under pressure okay I want us to look closely at his lower body if I said what starts his downswing okay I think we would see some

Common answers people would say his lower body starts his down swing his hips appear to rotate probably shift some and he’s definitely starting his downswing before he completes his back swing now we’ve got a nine handicap golfer over here solid player pretty good golf swing watch his lower body

Watch right here in the pelvis area if you watched his downswing I would probably say the same thing his hips start his downswing right they shift they rotate he initiates with the lower body before the arms get to the top but why when we get down into

The hitting area do we start to see such a big difference in the positions of him compared to just great Elite ball Strikers you can’t look at video to find exactly what they’re doing we need to hear hear them talk about it themselves so let’s see what they actually feel

Like they’re doing compared to what we see them do on video that’s where the secret really lies so let’s listen to Tommy describe the downswing in his own words first move from the downswing will then be my left hip goes straight back straight down that thing I don’t want it

To sway so I want it to go straight back which then sets the club and from there turn and hit so we see so many other great ball Strikers practicing the same thing in their downswing putting pressure down into the ground using the big muscles of their hip flexors hip

Flexion to start their downswing and then we don’t see it in their golf swing right you could see how much tiger right the goat is practicing it there and it’s something that just is really hidden from Plain Sight when you watch their swing at regular speed Camilo vas

Right swing looks pure and normal Justin rose hips flexing downward squatting pressuring the ground to start the downswing and then once again Fairway Jesus himself just practicing it slowly so many amateur golfers standing up turning out of the way spinning out sliding to start their downswing hey

It’s your coach Zack Allen here and I hope you’re enjoying today’s Lon lesson in all of my years of coaching and studying the golf swing I’ve discovered there’s only one thing that separates the best ball Strikers in the world from the rest of us I call it the magic move

And you can use it to generate effortless power and consistency in your game since I don’t have the time in this short video I’ve put together a three-part web class where I show you everything you need to know nothing held back I call it my magic move training

Series and you can get the entire thing free of charge by clicking the link in the description below you won’t find these videos anywhere else so click the link right now and join the over 100,000 golfers who have already gone through this incredible training and now let’s

Jump back into today’s lesson so to get people to tap into truly using their lower body right by getting into their hip flexors getting into their glutes grabbing the ground I just have them pick up some round objects just light ones to start and they’re starting to

Feel that connection between say the top of the back swing to when they start to transition to engage their lower body right then we go to heavier got a 10 lb Med ball and I really start to get that sensation of my feet gripping the ground my glutes the whole posterior chain

Being what initiates the down swing and from there it’s no different except we’re just kind of bringing it around and then we start to feel that same engagement from the top of the back swing so one to the top boom squat down that’s how you truly use your lower body

Spinning the hips sliding the hips I see so much of this to start down those are all just a little a skew from what truly is happening to start the down swing so I hope you guys enjoyed that right that’s literally going to be the simplest tip ever mentally right just

That feeling but if you need a little more detail on how to start the downswing I’ve got one here that’s definitely got some more detail right it’s got crazy detail to it take a look at that and that’ll explain some of the questions that you may have always had

And just last thing right to really help me support my channel right we don’t really do this for money we just do this to give free content out there if you could like And subscribe the video that really keps keeps the momentum going and it helps the channel Thrive have a great

Day I’ll see you next time

  1. Great video and definitely something that coaches don't really focus on when giving lessons. I like that you show a different way to think about it and will give the medicine ball a try and this concept has always been and continues to be something I work on but can never seem to grasp.
