Hello and welcome everybody today we’re talking about Trends in irons so discussions I’ve had with friends over the last 20 years really people say well iron technology hasn’t Advanced all right so let’s explore that and let’s see what really has changed in irons we’re going to start with 68

Because you know before this you know we could move to the Hickory era but it was very similar okay so you see blades like this very common and they have different things like wing pattern which moves the power behind behind the ball right so there’s talking about the mass behind

The ball just you know some really basic physics okay so it’s almost more decorative than like science or you know cuz nowadays it seems like everybody’s marketing and pushing the latest and greatest science and technology okay the technology is such an overused term in marketing and so this is a really simple

Blade okay look little Mt down here Mt Mt Mt just you know some embellishments here not really going to do anything for your ball striking mostly just for looks lovely lovely blade okay you can play golf with this and then the big jump let’s just jump right into it was the

Ping I 2 obviously the Ping I came before this I made videos about this lots of people have made videos about this come the 60s you know we’ 607s we’re pushing these cavity back irons all of a sudden this is visible technology look at this big huge gaping

Hole right here which allows us to push the mass to the side okay so this is you know an example you know they’ve been marketing the looks of it visible technology you know power behind the ball kind of ideas before this but they’re still marketing you know technology here more forgiveness okay

And you can see there’s a difference in the steel one’s stainless steel and one’s forged H all right so this idea of technology is what’s selling these ping I’s not the shiny oo look at me looks okay that’s interesting for some people and I’m going to ask this question at

The end I’m going to ask it now so you can think about it and you know I understand it’s Dynamic would you prefer the blade style look or the big cavity visible technology look okay it’s going to come full circle because we’re going to talk about modern like the 770s or

790 irons from Taylor made that are supposed to be just as forgiving but they look more blade likee so if you had to choose I understand you can know well I like blades and the you know like wedges and low irons than I like distance irons I like more of a hybrid

Or like cavity back I understand it’s different but if you had to pick one do you prefer the blade look or the visible cavity technology look so the Ping I 2 comes out and it’s lovely but you know 60s rolls through and people are like I think we can

Improve on that more a company can you see right here pinseeker comes out with a hollow metal wood in 1976 well that’s a wood not an iron well no these were sold as irons kind of hybrids and it’s a hollow metal wood yes you know Taylor may turn this into a

Driver Spalding turned into an iron but the idea of the benefits of a hollow iron were presented 196 1976 wow so we’ve jumped from visible Tech to kind of hidden Tech not hidden in the soul all right maybe granted like Ping for example speaking of ping they have you know the large sols

Like here’s a high launch ping G2 with the weight look at all this visible Tech the visible cavity the visible weight the visibly huge Soul they’re still marketing the look of this cavity well there was another idea that was presented in 1993 these are some face cards my other

Channel I review poker chips and cards and those are some chem face cards right there all right so in 1993 Taylor M comes out with this and I think this was way ahead of its time and one of the most underrated irons from the 9s they took this idea

Of that what pin stiner presented with oh look we can use you know foam injection hollow metal wood and they said wait a second we can make a hollow and if you look here on the toe this is the injection Port where they would inject

Foam into their Hollow irons so all of a sudden you can present a blade like iron contrasting starkly with the look at me huge cavity look obviously these are from different eras this is 2000s this is 1990s and this is where the trends are right now with many sets and remember that

Question I asked you know earlier do you prefer the blade or the cavity look so let’s step through this kind of like it’s an interesting idea of marketing and how Trends change okay so is there a difference between let’s roll this ping down because this ping has a huge Soul let’s find something

Maybe more of the era and more comparable maybe not have this eror but let’s you know again the Ping G2 eror look at this RAC okay look at the visible tech oh we’re going to put weights in this cavity okay now it’s not heel toe weighting they just wanted to put

Visible weights there and they’re marketing the looks of the cavity look at us here’s a visible technology where again more this is more hidden technology what do you prefer you know there are some weird ones too that are kind of like I’m not sure in between but like here’s the Callaway

Big birth of fusion what on Earth is that that’s not a it’s very visible that there’s a big piece of plastic there with this cavity back all right I don’t know how I feel about that I don’t like the way this things aged personally but it seems like they’re starting to like

Maybe we can make this look more blade likee rather than these huge visible things and even Muno got tied up in this you know the big Brands let’s talk about some big Brands even mauno was like well we want to jump into the visible Tech 2 here’s an mp-52 look at this what’s

Better than one cavity two cavities put your quarters in there I don’t know what why you would put two cavities I don’t get it but even Muno is going for this you know more visible Tech uh I have two more examples here like here’s one you know where it’s like

Visible Tech look at this huge huge cavity huge Hollow spot right here Super S Adams Golf look at this big soul all right cool and then the last one I want to show you even like I said the big names are doing it too here’s a Titleist ap2

And this is where they’re starting to kind of conceal it more but still very trying to get that visible Tech Forge tungsten they’re writing things on it to show the tech that’s hidden inside of it so it comes back to the question you know I’m the Vintage golfer we’re going to show some

Vintage examples here Let’s uh grab maybe the more extreme example the most extreme example we can for the sake of the question back to the Ping G2 and the tailor made burner midsize okay so like when you look at the new like the newish Ping oh sorry the tailor made p790 or

770 like I was looking at some at the PGA tour super store just the other was it it was 2 weeks ago before Christmas I was like oo I was admiring them they’re lovely irons and I was thinking I think I would prefer the hidden technology over the visible technology that was my

Gut feel and I still feel like that like given these two sets which one would I rather play right now I think I’d rather give me some tailor made burner midsize with the foam injection whatever maybe the so’s not as big maybe the cavity is not as big maybe not quite as forgiving

But to me I like this more and it’s it’s an interesting idea and concept to me it’s like we is it just cyclical like do we go from large cavities to Hidden back to large cavities or let’s call it visible technology I don’t know let me know your

Thoughts in the comments below do you prefer one over the other I imagine a lot of people like myself are going to try to skip the question there’s always this idea of I know better just give me a trusty old blade and who needs technology right it’s back to the golfer

I agree but you know like I said if you were to choose you’re away from home and you have two sets to rent and you could rent a huge cavity one or like the p790s or something which one would you pick and why so I’m interested to hear your

Thoughts but I was just looking at some irons I’m just like they went crazy with these cavities like through the 2000s and 201s kind of and now they’ve really embraced this Hollow iron which look can look very blade likee and I really like the look of them so really excited to read your

Comments now we’re going to dive into fantasy golf should I leave these here I can put the things up here on the other side let you I’m going to probably just rotate some of these out so you can see some of these other clubs which I had

Rolled in front of the camera here’s a mauno mp-52 but fantasy golf so it was the centy whatever I’m going to put up I wasn’t I don’t think I was in the top 10 but I’ll put up the leaderboard for the season and the week I love fantasy golf

  1. I have Takomo 101T irons. I built the set myself. I had P790 s. I had crazy distance control, so I sold them.

I do like the hidden tech, but drawn back a bit. My 101T clubs are similar to the P770s at more than 1/2 the price. Plus I built the set myself.

But…I do like the eye 2 set I have. The offset is a bit much. And, my favorite “winter” clubs are an indestructible cast set of DCI Black 962. Still play them.

  2. I play exclusively now with MacGregor Muirfield 20th blades 2-SW and persimmon. I am 51 years old, handicap is 3, I play links golf in the UK and couldn’t be happier using my equipment.

  3. Cool video! Amazing to see the Taylor made burner introduced the foam filled cavity tech in the 90’s that I see is marketed as the hot new thing of recent years. So much wisdom you have and I appreciate you sharing your collection.

  4. MT Tourney or similar for me, but to answer the question; if I was given the choice of two rental sets, I'd probably take the massive Pings just for the hell of it and the fact that I've never hit a Ping iron before. (Or do I want to keep that proud boast? 😉)

  5. PING clubs are not "beautiful" but they are distinctive and have character which I find very appealing.

  6. I still play the TaylorMade Burner Midsize irons. I agree that they were ahead of their time and believe that they are close to the same foam filled tech of the new P770's and are almost the same lofts. (7 & 8 irons are exactly the same lofts/degrees) Would love to see a heads-up comparison of the Midsize vs P770 and just how far new tech has come. Thanks for posting/sharing.

  7. For me, if the iron looks nice at address whatever’s in the cavity doesn’t really bother me unless it’s just that ugly. Like for old 845s irons, they look great in the cavity but the offset takes away from the appeal of the club so I prefer the look of a dci or 320 iron.

  8. I play blades, old blades!

Walter Hagen Ultradyne ii – 1975

    Ben Hogan Apex – 1973

    Hogan persimmon woods – 1971

Playing golf with old equipment is FUN!!!

    🙏🏻😎🙏🏻

  9. For me I like the look and feel of a player's cavity back, but I'm thinking back years ago now…the Taylormade burner tour irons from '96-'98ish, with all the ugly goldish-brown paint fill removed and polished down with steel whool. Hey, those are Still in my bag right now, I even "de-chromed" the stiff Precision rifle shafts, look sorta like a KBS c-taper shaft. The deal on those pro level irons was the sole ground…very freindly as they had some "bounce" not flat and knife edged. Often overlooked when it comes to playability.
Any iron that has that muscle pad (mizuno t- zoid/ the rac's, Ping s55/i200) I just like that look. Never cared for gimmicks or big paint fills. Some of the new Maltby iron heads look very good, understated tech!

  10. I've had fun messing around with vintage clubs in the last couple years. Played a few rounds with some Wilson Sam Snead Blue Ridge irons and MacGregor Ben Crenshaw woods. Recently I stumbled across a HUGE find while at Goodwill. I saw a cool black and red leather/pleather RAM bag and when I looked at what was in it, I found a full set of RAM Fastbacks. 3-PW, Matching Fastback 1,3,4,5 Maple laminate woods. All for $20. The irons had headcovers and they are about as clean as can be with very little wear, same with the woods. Immediately pulled the original cracked grips off and replaced them. Can't wait to go out and play a round with them after winter.

I've had so much fun playing vintage clubs. It takes away the pressure of trying to score well. I'm a decent player at around a 6 handicap so luckily I can put a decent strike on any club. I can already picture the 220 yard little butter cut off the first tee using the 1 wood🤣

  11. Iron has changed a lot. I started 1976 and bought a set of clubs with name Honeycomb. I think they were with toe heel Toe heel and weight in the sole in Ping Eye was just a dream due to the price tag. Problem for me is that every vendor has changed their loft all the time, Today a 9i is like an 8i or even 7i years ago. Example Ping Eye from end 90s 7i was on 36 degree, today a 9i can be on 38 degree. Also a Gap wedge today can be on 48 degree and a typical Sand wedge is on 56 degree so you get a gap of 8 degree and the reason why the Gap wedge came out initially to be around 52 degree was that the Pitching wedge was suddenly bent up like 9i. Now you need a 52 degree wedge added in any case so we are just fooling ourselves…. just saying.

  12. Titleist 712 MB are my favorite club of all time, followed by the Mizuno MP20 copper, and third the Nike Blades from the mid 2000’s.

  13. I played the RAC os all the way through high school until last year and loved the feel. Contact felt good and sounded good and the ball always felt like it jumped off the face. New technology and stiffer shafts were the only reason i upgraded, otherwise i probably would’ve stuck with them until they gave out.
