The disc craft Zone ever since its release in 2008 it’s been considered one of if not the greatest overstable approach disc ever released and it’s so beloved that just about every company out there has tried to make their own Zone but no company has ever really captured the magic that is the disc

Craft Zone but I think there is one disc out there that Rivals The Zone very well and I’m sorry Robbie but it’s not the pig now don’t get me wrong the pig is a solid mold it actually came out around the same time that the Zone did but the

Pig is labeled as a mid-range and we’re kind of talking about overstable approach discs so now don’t get me wrong there are plenty of really solid Zone clones out there like the Razer claw 3 great disc Prodigy Distortion also great disc even the Toro from ineva solid but they’re

All like exactly what I said they’re all clones none of them are like super original yeah they kind of made it their own flavor and made it their own in a sort of way but at the end of the day they’re trying to be zones that was awful terrible release from my

Hand and this one disc that I think Rivals it at least in my opinion it’s a very original disc original mold and that is The Prodigy A2 and Prodigy I think consistently has done a very good job of making their own original molds instead of just straight up copying

Other ones and I want to expand on that but first let me give this hole a few Ace runs and then I want to tell you a little bit about this video sponsor Aura oh was way too high way too high that was straight at it that is not

It either too low it’s probably one of the worst things about the end of the year holiday season is all the scams and fraud and people trying to steal your information people are trying to steal your bank account information or even stealing like your social security number just identity well Aura is there

To keep you safe online they monitor your credit and bank accounts to make sure there’s no fraud happening there they have identity theft Insurance they’ll even find everyone that like has your information and opt out of their services and tell them to lose it to get

Rid of it and you’d be surprised at how many people might have have your information and AA takes all of that security and puts it into one service for you it’s simple you don’t have to worry about having like five six seven different Services protecting you it’s

All in one app so you can live stressfree about your information online as my light goes out and if you want to check out Ora for yourself you can get a free 2E trial at the link in the description or at ora.com aollo QR code

Is on screen and you can see just how many people have your information online it would it would shock you and thank you AA for sponsoring this video so like look at all of the stuff that Prodigy is kind of known for a lot of it is not

Clones of another disc like if you take any other company like the Staples in their lineup are pretty much like the original Staples that Innova first came out with like t- birds Firebirds the buzz or Zone from Discraft or Destroyer Innova kind of had that like unfair

Advantage of being the first to really just innovate all the new mold so everyone’s kind of copying them but Prodigy hasn’t really done that they haven’t really leaned on those like copies of Staples of Inova or Discraft all of their Staples are really just original moles well at least as original

As you can be in this day and age of dis golf cuz there’s hardly anything original like they’re known for like the pa3 which is probably the one of the most unique and original Putters on the market with it’s like blocky Rim puddle top and the beads like it’s it’s not

Really a copy of like the KC AVR or the Challenger or which the Challenger is a copy of the KC AVR if you didn’t know no one’s really just made anything like this or their mid-ranges like yes the flights are pretty similar to something

Like a buzz or beat up Rock 3 or makeo 3 stuff like that but the shape of them is very unique and it’s you don’t really see that anywhere else on the market they’re just a very original very unique shape to them then you get to this A2

And this is basically their Zone in their lineup but it’s not like a Zone it is very unique disc it’s a lot shallower than the Zone it has a dome when the zones are all flat or puddle topped The Zone has a very rounded Edge to it and this A2 like

If you look at the edge of this thing this the edge of this is super sharp I’m not talking about the flashing like Prodigy’s gotten a lot better with the flashing all right just not talking about that it’s like the edge itself is just a lot lot sharper than the zone and

Because of that this just it Rivals it in a way that it makes something new on the market that I don’t think we’ve ever had a whole lot of cuz it’s a lot faster than a Zone and it because of that it goes a lot farther than a Zone you can

Really rip on this and it’s almost as fast as like a mid-range or something it goes very far for how beefy it is because this is a lot more overstable than the Zone like take the zone for example I love how overstable it is on like shorter approaches it’s kind of

Like a more touchy overstable approach disc if you want to call it that cuz on short distances it acts very overstable and it fights the winds really well and the lack of Glide gives it just a lot of Integrity in the wind but you take this

On the te and you rip on it like fully rip on it these things go pretty straight for a good long while like it won’t turn over on you unless you give it a off off AIS torque or you give it a little Little Annie it’s not going to go

Right for you at all it’s just going to go straight for a long time and it’ll give you like some sort of dump but it’s more of like a putter dump it doesn’t really hook at the end of the flight so on like longer drives you can almost rip

This just a little to the right of your target almost straight at it and you’re not going to be in a terrible spot you should still have a pretty good look and a good putt at the basket the A2 on the other hand it’s a lot faster and is just

A lot beef here on short approaches it’s more overstable and like when you rip on it on a te it’s still just going to give you that hook of a flight for it so if you’re throwing the same hole and you’re wanting to throw it straight at it you

If you accidentally throw the Zone straight at it at a really long drive I’m talking like 260 to 300 ft this thing will go pretty straight and if you accidentally throw it right at your target you shouldn’t be too far left of it at the end of the flight because

You’ve put some so much power on it and it’s not going to fade a ton if you throw this accidentally right at the Target you’re going way far left you might even get a skip to even go farther so this is definitely more of a utility overstable approach disc I would almost

Compare it to like the Zone being your like sexon Firebird that’s like nice and straight firebird and the A2 I would compare more like the flat top stiff Firebirds some that’s like right out of your hand is going to hook up and and Skip for you there’s really just two

Different ways you can approach this kind of competition talking about like something as great as the Zone like you can either compete directly with it and that’s kind of the approach that a lot of the other companies are doing they’re trying to make a Zone to compete with the

Zone or you can do what Prodigy is doing and kind of like make your own thing they’re like attacking the Zone’s Lane by not attacking that lane and going a different Lane that makes sense like the A2 is so different that you can really bag both the zone and the A2 and not

Really have a ton of overlap there like that would not be weird to have a Zone and an A2 in the bag they are that different which you can’t really say about any of the other companies’s Zone competitors because of that I think Prodigy has really rivaled

The Zone in terms of its greatness they’ve created a whole new slot in your bag and they are leading that slot in my opinion which I honestly think is probably the best approach you can take to something like this because I don’t see ever see the original of really any

Of those great molds losing to a copy of it the only way I see those like staple Originals losing is if the game kind of evolves past it or to something different kind of like the rock maybe I don’t know is that it’s like kind of a

Hot Topic as the game kind of evolved and moved on from the rock or Rock 3 I don’t know maybe that’s an maybe that’s another video which if I make that I’ll post it here anyways thanks for watching I’ll see you in the next one it’s a

Robbie I’m not going to lie I do think the uh Pig fits into this conversation as well because it pretty much does what the A2 does it’s like competes with the Zone but doesn’t compete with the Zone but to be completely honest and Frank with you I uh completely forgot about it

Until I was out here and I was like oh probably going to get comments or people like Robbie or Robbie himself be like what about the pig fits in that same conversation I’m like well it does I just completely forgot about it and I don’t have it with me so it’s a mid-range

Anyways

  1. The A2 is the only Prodigy disc I bag. I never liked the Zone or Tactic. A2 is more stable in general and a much better forehand feel.

  2. I bag the culprit which is like a cross between a zone and an a2. it is slightly sharper that a zone but not a2 sharp. also has slight dome like the a2

  3. Heard the A3 can make some whistling noise so went with it instead, a beaded shallow disc, it likes my forehand and feels dependable. So now I got a Pig, Loki and A3 that will be fighting for almost the same slot. Putting my Pig at 3.5 speed. ^_^

  4. Personally a huge fan of both of these molds and agree with the difference descriptions. A2 is severely underrated

  5. I've been liking my Ruin for that Zone slot since I'm so used to throwing Roc's with a bead. It seems to be doing well.

  6. I love that you forgot about the Pig and enjoyed seeing you realize the future influx of comments… I really hope Robbie chimes in! Love your take on things!

  7. I totally agree with you on this. I do bag both of these disc. No overlap between the two. They’re both great

  8. Really good review. I have 400 A2 and 400 A5 in my bag. I currently bag 20 discs, all made by Prodigy. Probably pretty clear that its my favorite manufacturer.

  9. i still argue that Pig aint a 4 speed it flies more like putter so it will be in my heart for ever 3 speed.

  10. Just found your channel today, and then you post today!! Have a great year, man. I'll be here for it ❀

  11. Gator was PDGA approved in 2000, 8 years before the Zone, and does everything as well as or better than other “approach discs.” The true OG overstable approach disc.

  12. I'm old and have low arm speed. My favorite over stable Mid/Approach discs are Disc Mania's Maestro and Innova Lion. My arm's too slow for the Zone and Pig. Thanks. Great Channel!

  13. I like to bag a zone (I actually have my circuit challenge Tempo in my bag atm which is nearly identical) but I don’t feel like it’s overstable enough to cover all the overstable approach shots I want to throw. I’ve been using a Jarn for when I need just a little extra bite, which is actually pretty often because if I need to disc to go left the zone doesn’t tend to do that consistently enough for me. I’m a big fan of the concept of “zone but faster” and the Pyro actually fills that slot quite well for me.

  14. A2 is a goat for FH but I felt like it was too shallow for BH, which is odd because I have short fingers.

  15. I like the a2 but at times it has just a little too much glide so I switch then to an a1 or berg.

  16. I feel like all the people leaving and hating on prodigy this is David throwing them a small bone out of sympathy

  17. after I lost my zone, I started using a Legacy Ghost. it is based on an old Roc mold. goes a little bit farther than the zone with the same reliable flight. Does really well in heavy winds. Didn't know the Roc was uncool now. not sure what that makes the Ghost!

  18. Been wanting to try an A2 since seeing Nate Turner kill his approach shots with it.

Also genuine question, how does your Prodigy M4s feel?
Went to a wedding in MN from WI. Stopped at 6 local disc stores, every single M4 I felt had the worst flashing I’ve seen not only on a disc but just on plastic in general. They were all in the exact same spot and it wasn’t even like a little flashing left over, it genuinely felt like it was almost apart of the mold because it was so thick and protruding, much more than average flashing I see on discs.

  19. I bag a razor claw 3 for the same reasons you talk about the A2 except it is deeper than the zone as opposed to shallower. Like the A2 it immediately starts dumping on a full power backhand.

  20. A2 and harp for me. A2 is for my over stable approach’s and the harp for a straighter shot

  21. Idk anyone else, but my Overstable Approach disc is Discmanias Sockibomb Raptor Eye. There’s been a lot of rotations in my bag since I’ve started playing 6 months ago, maybe 2 or 3 disc have stayed and one of them is my raptor eye

  22. I go with the thought space temple for that over stable approach. I say it’s in between a zone and a A2. For me it has more dump than a zone but not as much as a A2 plus in the nerve plastic it doesn’t skip like a A2

  23. It’s interesting as you gave love to the Culprit from Dynamic Discs in this slot last year. I’ve thrown Culprits, Harps, and Pigs but this slot for me belongs to the JĂ€rn.

  24. I'd say the A3 is the better pick for most people. Still dependably OS but more workable. Great in the hand for both BH and FH, certainly prefer the feel over Zone.

  25. Everyone says you have to have a ZONE, get a ZONE. So, I did and now I have settled that the JÄRN from Kastaplast is just better….. at least for me.
