All I can think of hearing this is when does the MLB do something similar if the purists hate homeruns? This is such gatekeepy bs its crazy. Tour pros should use Top Flights they don't need the forgiveness and spin if we don't want them shooting record lows. Why does the average golfer need to suffer because the best are too good? No other sport has a bigger gap between average Joe and Pro.
Clickbait-y title. I didn't think the boys argued that hard for it being a bad idea! In fact, I think Patrick "won" here. We shouldn't care!
#BoycottTheBall
Can you imagine the baseball rules association determined the pros are hitting the ball too far and thus little league needs to use wooden bats.
There is going to be a massive market for nonconforming balls. It may even provide enough market pressure that the manufacturers that are against this will be forced to produce them.
Golf is hard enough for us average folks, we don’t need to take distance away.
Golf is REALLY REALLY REALLY hard. Even at the Elite Amateur level in some of the tournaments I've played in, always dozens of players who don't sniff Par and a lot of players who never go that low.
I don't really know how I feel about this. It's conflicting. There's always going to be the individuals that seperate themselves and make it to the tour, and either way you still have to do it. But at my level? Golf is still really really really hard. Why are we making it more difficult?
I see a lot of ATHLETES playing Golf now. Training and distance has a lot to do with that. I don't attribute clubhead speed increases to solely equipment or a Golf Ball.
I personally think this is going to suck
Rolling back the ball on todays long courses will only benefit the longer hitters even more lmao, no wonder Rory wants it to happen, gives him a better chance at breaking his 9 year major drought 🤣
At the professional level, it ISN'T a game, it's a BUSINESS!
This will end the USGA and R&A as the governing body’s of the sport and a new organization will be founded which is the new rules organization the golf world follows. Simple as that. The USGA and R&A are on the verge of destroying themselves and becoming irrelevant.
and anyone who thinks having a new organization pop up before 2028-2030 is not possible…have you heard of LIV? 0-100 in a few years for a full golf league…copying and pasting 99% of the USGA rules and adjusting the dumb ones will be so simple. They could do it by next season and everyone would know it’s coming so the PGA, LIV and manufacturers can all just say “yeah we are not adjusting anything, we will just partner with the new organization and the USGA and R&A will just be irrelevant”
Just need the right big names in golf to support it and bam bye bye USGA and R&A and hello new smarter organization run by people who are not sorry old men.
F*CK THE USGA!! Stop trying to ruin the game as it is peaking in popularity globally.
Dont stop evolution. F*ck a rollback, and f*ck the USGA. Mike Whan should be fired and never allowed to work in golf again. #FireMikeWhan
Rick nailed it. Who cares if those old courses aren't the same. Things change, records are broken, either don't play there anymore or just shoot record scores. It's really not that big a deal. Why the old muppets in charge think making a backwards step in progression is going to help the game is beyond me. Absolute clowns.
RNA trying to help Rory? I hate the idea and I say, get rid of the ruling bodies, pare them back. If I quit, my wife n kids quit too since I pay for them to play and if you think this won’t affect number of players in golf you’re sadly mistaken. Distance is what brings in the young kids. Wonders don’t have someone to spot their ball, penalty stroke. Wonders don’t have a caddy or green slope cars to help with putting so if Rory thinks they play a different game, yeah, they might as well be cheating with all the help they get.
Do you guys have any idea how many corporate long drive winners use smaller non conforming balls to win those prizes? It’s all cheating now and no one is getting caught since 99% won’t be prosecuted, they can cheat easily in corporate events instead.
Let’s give hockey players a heavier puck and a wooden stick, tennis players wooden racquets, skiers leather boots, cyclists steel frame bikes, …
If the golf ball rollback reduces ball speed by 5% and Driver rules restrict ball speed, doesn't that mean new technology will maximize ball speed to regain lost distance and we're back at square one?
If you wanna keep playing st Andrew’s, then st Andrews should have players just use a special vintage golf ball for that tournament!
I like the idea of everyone playing the same ball. I also like the idea of rolling back the ball.
A 5% roll back will significantly hurt the pro game of golf, because it will give the guys who drive 310-315+ (pre roll back) a tremendous advantage over the field… the way the average driving distance is right now sets a relatively fair playing field. Most par 5's… most pros have the potential to reach in two…. the rollback takes us back to the Tiger Woods prime era where he was averaging 300 a drive where he was among the small percentage of golfers that had this driving advantage, whereas the majority of the field were at a significant disadvantage with little chance to reach many par 5's in two. In the last 14 years as the average pro now drives over 300 yards the big driving advantage gap is significantly decreased. The roll back will take us back to the same gap that gave Tiger Woods his automatic advantage over the field and a small number of golfers will have a significant advantage over the rest of the field… this will ruin a lot of great golfers games… it gives a tremendous advantage to the long drivers… to the point where it's going to eliminate the guys who average 301 or less (pre roll back) from almost every competition (which will be around 286 after the roll back).
The notion of a roll back in of itself wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing if the average distance was 315 vs 301, but the roll back just so happens to take golf driving distance into one of the worst spectrum's of distance. Big drivers will pretty much be starting off with roughly a 4 stroke advantage on most courses. Right now driving distances are perfect. As it stands now a big drive can give players some potential advantages, however a roll back makes these advantages significant and almost a necessity to even be able to remain competitive.
You know what is a bad idea, the USGA using a 360cc driver head for testing!! How come no one is talking about that?
