Phil Mickelson | How to read a putt
Phil Mickelson had a scratch player read the putt in this video and the scratch golfer said the putt had 2 cups of break. If Phil Mickelson aims 8 inches out (2 cups) he would miss the putt low every time. Phil Mickelson knows the correct read is to aim 2 feet out (24in). What Amateurs are seeing is 8 inches of break but then they unknowingly pull or push above the line to make the putt. Amatures also think the apex of the putt is about 4 feet from the golf ball. This is incorrect as well. Phil Mickelson explains that the apex is at Impact. Phil Mickelson more than doubles the amatures read to almost 2 feet of break. When Phil Mickelson putts on the correct line/read you will see the golf ball move straight down the string/target line, but the ball immediately falls below the line (proving that the apex of the putt is at impact!). Phil Mickelson wants us to train to read putts properly so we can identify what’s causing us to miss putts out on the course (You can’t get better/make changes without the correct feedback of information). Phil Mickelson has to train himself everyday to read greens properly and to train how to aim his putter correctly, so when he doesn’t have any training aids he knows exactly where he is aiming at.
