Ahead of the Challenge Cup Final we spoke to Club Ambassador & Historian Mike Latham who talks about Leigh’s history with the cup and retells the feelings around the club & town back in 1971.
I’m a Saints fan. I moved to the Leigh area 14 years ago and I’ve watched Leigh on and off during that time. Though I still go watching Saints I wanted Leigh to get to Wembley. I think they’re a fantastic club with a fantastic core fan base, and I still watch them when I can fit their games in, typically half a dozen games a season. That was a fascinating film. Mike is a credit to the club, Town and game. RIP to our old club historian Denis Whittle. He did a tremendous job for St Helens. I recall Walsh boots, too. I had a pair in the 1980’s. With regards to Derek, I used to think he was a bit of a crank, I’m sorry to say. That couldn’t be further from the truth. He seems like a remarkable character. That was a master stroke to have him and Mike reinforcing to the players the importance they have on the town. Mike is right, this success is down to him and his bloody minded perseverance!

This was the best thing I’ve watched all year! I wasn’t born in 71, but gosh this is inspiring! Feeling so unbelievably proud.
