Golf hybrids have been one of the great success stories of golf club designers over the last number of years.

But while the invention of the hybrid iron has eased the pain of long iron shots the fact that they now provide options for every iron the inevitable question which follows for golfers is – what hybrids should I have in my golf bag? The stock reply to this question is that it depends on an individual player’s personal preferences and their knowledge of their strengths and weaknesses.

All of which is true but not particularly helpful.

So in this video we take you through some practical guidelines, including the ’24/38 rule’, to help you answer the question about how many hybrids you need, explain why you should have at least one hybrid in your bag no matter your standard, and also discuss what hybrids the top PGA and LPGA pros are using.

  1. I used to hate hybrids, they always went left and hooked. But new technology that lets you flatten the lie angle has changed my views. I have replaced my long irons with Ping G425 hybrids! Interestingly I carry both a 5 hybrid and a 5 iron as there is a significant distance gap (30 yds) between 5 hybrid and 6 Iron, the 5 Iron covers the gap, but i had to give up my LW, my SW is 56 so going to 3 wedges vice 4 wedges is the cost of the change.

  2. I am huge fan of 4 and 5 hybrids. It would be go to 185-170 yard second shot on a fairly after a drive. My longest iron is a 6 iron. My driver club speed is 95-100mph so this ties in with what is said here. I play in park cut grass golf with big mature trees making fairways very tight is just off the fairway, so a bump and run to 120-30 yards with maximum ball height of 5ft is common.

  3. I currently play woods down to a 5 wood, and irons up to 3 iron, which leaves me a gap between175 yards and 200 yards. I do have an older 21 degree hybrid, but it's not in the bag as I hit the 3 iron much better. I'll get it out and try it again this year, but maybe I should try a newer hybrid.

  4. Really liking hybrids recently. Very versatile clubs and tighter dispersion too than my driver and woods. I currently play 2-3-5-7 hybrids / 9iron to GW+S+Lob wedge setup. Benched my driver and woods for now.

  5. I have multiple Callaway Hybrids – 2 of them the Epic Super Hybrid and 1 Apex 21. Very easy and super forgiving to work with. Thanks for the video, I think I am going to consider a 6 Hybrid.

  6. 10 club bag (on purpose) using 24-30-36 hybrid then jump to my 46 degree wedge on the short end or 21 degree 7 wood on the long end. Complete sets of irons are a joke. Yes blended sets are becoming popular. I think regular golfers aren’t going to maximize results from 7 total irons. I see lots of old iron sets from golfers who have no desire to drop $1200. I’m not saying you need to bag less than 14 clubs, but maybe we need to rethink what type of club we need from 22 degrees up to about 42 degrees.

  7. PAUL HERE ,
YOU HAVE JUST MENSIONED A SIMULATER , ARE THEY FIXED IN THE SENCE OF OK STRAIGHT BUT FOR DISTANCE, WELL I PURCHASED THE MAVRIK LAST YEAR SUB ZERO AND best I managed was 220 yards however ground was hard last summer which may add a few yards but 78 yards or 73 yards and my best before that was 240 yds that is not realistic but this was 293 298 are more than that , I played so much I thought it cracked so had to trade it in to buy another which best in there was 221 on course and it's only 4 rounds old 242 .
