  1. Phil's hinge and hold avoids flipping the wrists and 'blading' it; I use it for a pitch and Tigers method for a chip.

  2. The Phil method gets a lot easier if you are on some fringe or sitting up in the rough a bit (a little air under the ball helps with slight mis hits). For every other situation, the bounce is your friend.

  3. Unless you are a mid single digit or better, putt or bump a hybrid whenever it's reasonable to do so. Next choice, get close with 7-9i, raise the heel slightly and use a putting stroke. If the lie or carry requirements don't allow those, tigers method uses the sole/bounce as it was designed to be used and offers the most forgiveness. Read James sieckmann's book. There's more to it than saying play the ball in the center and use the bounce. When paired with the proper grip and sequencing it's far more reliable for non professionals.

  4. You gotta have both methods. Neither of the 2 of them stuck to those 2 methods. They both use each method extensively

  5. I don't use either of these methods. I do what Bobby Jones taught, namely to stand upright, totally relaxed, ball toward back of stance, and use the least amount of loft to get the ball onto the green and rolling to the hole. Move the ball up toward your forward foot if you need to get over something or stop the ball from running too much. I wouldn't use a sand wedge on the shots you show here, and may I suggest a lot of amateurs shouldn't either.

  6. Absolutely fantastic video. Super informative and its crazy to see how different their approaches are around the short grass.

  7. As someone who was COMPLETELY on the hinge and hold side and has learned to use the bounce correctly to add tons of sauce on pitch shots, here is the truth:

BOTH are the best and both are important! Especially if you want to be a great short game player!

The hinge and hold is extremely reliable and useful for amateur golfers (high to mid handicappers) as long as you don't add to much forward press at address. It's repeatable and contact is almost always good as MrShortGame points out. It gives you no room to flip it and skull the ball over the green. It's how I learned from a young age, and it is second nature.

Using bounce "Tiger method" is EXTREMELY critical for better players (low handicap to scratch+). The hinge and hold does not allow you to use bounce (keeps the leading edge down) which can hurt you into grain, in soft conditions (crappy lies), and when you needs high/stopping power. Being able to release the right hand and add bounce allows you to not only add height and softness but also can help you hit the low nippers that check quickly (not saying that can't be done with hinge and hold, but it is way easier with the second method shown). It's also very hard to draw and fade your chips and pitches without using the bounce and the right hand.

If you are a good player and want to be GREAT with your short game, using both is so so key. Being able to pull off whatever shot you need to and having options to play MANY shots is so key. Practice practice practice and see which one works for different shots. I can confidently say having both is paramount in anyone's short game.

  8. For me, if I am putting the club on the ball well, the Tiger method runs out more and the Phil method delivers more check and less run out. I tend to hing and hold more often but if I want more run out I use a less lofted club.

  9. Great video! Love the fact that you say people should not pick one method just because one pro do like this or that.

  10. I believe you need both methods. Phil's way for longer chip and runs, Tigers method for shorter softer chips

  11. Phils dominant hand ie control, touch etc is his lead hand,Tigers, like most golfers dominant hand is his trail hand.

  12. Cool to see a short game video again! I can’t get used to the mic on the hat- on any channel 😅

  13. I just switched to the Phil technique this winter. Practice shows my results are way more consistent with less margin of error. Distance and flight height are easily changed with being able to use multiple wedges for the shot at hand

  14. I caught the yips and no matter how many people I went to it never helped! I stood over the ball like I was trying to diffuse a time bomb! Then I went left hand low and BOOM, game changer! Daddy’s back! Confidence through the roof!

  15. Thank you for the permission to share this video. As for whose is better, I just wish I could do either lol.

A question on the bounce… Is a bigger bounce easier for a high handicapper? I find the performance clubs with the bigger bounce harder to get spin with.
