What to Do When Ball Is Lost or Out of Bounds
If a ball is lost or out of bounds, the player must take stroke-and-distance relief by adding one penalty stroke and playing the original ball or another ball from where the previous stroke was made (see Rule 14.6).
Exception – Player May Substitute Another Ball under Other Rule When It Is Known or Virtually Certain What Happened to Ball: Instead of taking stroke-and-distance relief, the player may substitute another ball as allowed under a Rule that applies when his or her ball has not been found and it is known or virtually certain that the ball:
Came to rest on the course and was moved by an outside influence (see Rule 9.6) or played as a wrong ball by another player (see Rule 6.3c(2)),
Came to rest on the course in or on a movable obstruction (see Rule 15.2b) or an abnormal course condition (see Rule 16.1e),
Is in a penalty area (see Rule 17.1c), or
Was deliberately deflected or stopped by any person (see Rule 11.2c).
Penalty for Playing Ball from a Wrong Place in Breach of Rule 18.2: General Penalty under Rule 14.7a.

This feels odd to me. If you deliberately play along the wrong fairway and end up two holes over, and you can't find your ball, it doesn't matter why, you should have to take a penalty
Is it critical that the committee saw the ball get taken before the 3 minutes was up? Or would the outcome have been the same if they found out after 5 minutes?
Not really understandable by the spectator, It isn't 7pm on a sunday at your local course, it is a golf Tourney haha

The committee are professional referees. They need to read the definition of Known or Virtually certain Interpretation/2 third bullet point. If the fact it was picked up only comes to light after the 3 minutes search is over, it's too late.
It's always this guy that has a rules-related issue. I guess just playing the game straight doesn't work for him.
Wait a second…. So every stroke I’ve given myself from lost balls at a Muni course from disappearing balls from hackers pocketing them…. I get a free drop????
Well that’s at least 5-10 strokes I’ve penalized myself with…
Golf committee knew bryson ball was picked up, they are like ehh let's just let him keep looking for it 😆
Have seen a video of a squirrel picking up and taking a golf ball. I will now invoke rule 18.2(s) for squirrel for all balls I can't find 🙂
