Players are able to generate excessive energy and strength by utilizing the ground in their golf swing. A simple way to generate more power in your swing begins by understanding that our feet and legs are essential transmitters of energy. While overusing our legs can cause instability in our downswing that will ultimately be more detrimental to the sequence than helpful. Beginners and seniors alike both suffer from overactive legs during their swings and as a result often experience reverse pivots, reverse weight shift, swaying, loss of swing balance, lack of swing coil and general off plane swings that undermine the basic mechanics of the process.

Overusing the lower body during our swings coincides with the law of diminishing returns. While players should aim to have their lower bodies initiate first during their downswing, they’ll also need to be mindful about slowing down and transferring their momentum to the upper body muscle groups. Excessive hip or leg sliding can often cause the mechanics in the upper body to lag behind the rest of the swing, which leads to very little force being transferred to the golf ball during impact.

While executing your backswing, the lower body should be providing a stable foundation so that the upper body muscle groups can properly coil around. Your legs and hips must remain reactive to the coil in the upper body in order to execute the best possible golf swing. By remaining proactive and moving independently, setting up the proper starting positioning will allow golfers to create a stable base for their swings immediately.
