Terrance asks Maria of this question. Maria is joined by PGA Professional Gideon Traub of Gideon explains that if you make a 3/4 swing, you are going to take some yardage off of the shot, and if you also choke down on the club, you are again reducing the distance.
Gideon suggests the rule of thumb is about 10% less if you take a 3/4 golf swing as opposed to a full swing – so on an 80 yard full swing sand wedge, you could expect to hit it 3/4 about 70 yards. And then by choking down as well, you can estimate taking another, maybe 5% off the distance. So, if you swing 3/4 AND choke down, you will probably take off about 15% of the distance from a normal full swing.
However, the only way to truly know is to practice such a shot. Go to the range and hit some full swing shots, then practice choking down and taking 3/4 swings and gauge the decrease in distance as a result.
