Sally asked Maria Palozola, of if the swing that you use for fairway woods should be flatter than the swing you will have when you use shorter irons, such as a 9 iron. Maria explains that yes, your swing with woods will be flatter simply because of the design of the club. Because fairway woods are longer than irons, woods sit naturally on a flatter plane and as a result will swing around your body on a flatter plane than short irons.

You do not have to do anything consciously to swing flatter, rather the length of the woods makes you stand further from the ball and a bit more upright. This results in a change in posture with shoulders that rotate more level around your spine. As your arms follow your shoulders, your swing plane will become more level.
