Fairway Wood or Hybrid? You’re Asking the Wrong Question

Fairway Wood or Hybrid? You’re Asking the Wrong Question

Fairway wood or hybrid? The answer has less to do with which club is easier and more to do with your misses, yardage gaps and scoring tendencies. Build your bag around the shots you actually hit, not the perfect shot you hope to hit.

  1. I carry a 3 wood and a 4 hybrid, my 3 wood is lofted to 18 degrees and depending on the day I carry it 190 to 205, my 4 hybrid is 24 degrees and carry it 175 to 190, I like the both because I get a good high flight with them both and sitting behind the ball I can see the club face which gives me confidence to hit them. 👍🏌️‍♂️🇨🇦

  2. If we are talking hybrids, might as well discuss chipper clubs (can be pretty fun depending on the course and green/fringe conditions) and also 2-irons and 3-irons (a very nice club when needing to punch out low and hard!). Thoughts???

  3. There is a real thing called the Hawthorne Effect. (Google Hawthorne Effect Western Electric) Golf industry exploits and depends on it to sell clubs. . . any club. . . 3wood, hybrid, long iron, it does not matter. You will always hit the new club you just changed to for a short period of time. . . Then you will go right back to your base standard. It aint the club, it is the clubber. (Only my ever so humble opinion, but proven by the Hawthorne Effect.)

Great video. Worthy of a like and comment.

  4. A weekly Q&A would be cool! No question, I like how you always put back on us the responsibility for our game. I was playing with a pro one time and I asked him for advice on making an on course decision. He looked at me and said you are all alone out here. The idea is we have to make our own decisions when it comes to shots to hit and clubs to put in our bag. I stop at a 5 iron and then have 2 hybrids, a 5 wood and a mini driver. I switch them in and out of my bag depending on where I am playing and how I feel. I do not know if an expert golfer would say this is good or bad, I only know it makes sense to me and it works.

  5. Hi Tony — first, thank you for answering my question and for the incredible counsel. Really, really good! Also, and like a bunch of others have noted, I like the idea of a weekly Q/A, as it would be fun to see what's on other people's lists and get input to those areas. Again, thank you for answering my question and for all you do — Tom in Dallas

  6. I recently acquired an 11 wood mini spinner. I have a 5, 7, 9, 11 in fairway woods. It works for me. Easy to hit. Irons I have 7-9. I put my R7 shaft onto my Qi10 and it’s like a 3 wood with a giant club face, easy to hit. I’m almost 50 years old. Just trying to simplify the game, not trying to be on the PGA tour.

  7. Great advice. As an older player I have replaced virtually all my irons with hybrids (Eleven Golf make these – not sure whether they are easily available in the USA). It makes the game so much easier – at least for me. You can’t shank them either!

  8. My hybrids are 21 and 24 degrees loft, and I also carry a 3 and 5 wood. My driver has two inches cut from the shaft, now 43 inches, more control and consistency, and better ball flight. Lost about 5 yards, but fairway finder percentage is very high, keep it on the short stuff works for me.

  9. Not the biggest fan of fairway woods, though I admit the best sound in golf is a 3 or 5 wood struck perfectly. The shorter shaft and smaller clubhead of hybrids appeals to me more. There's no uncertainty, I know exactly how I need to hit it. I roll with a 4 hybrid 22°, 2 driving iron 18°, and 2 hybrid 15.5°. I like having 2 types in there to keep it interesting and steer away from 1 if one is feeling unconfident.

  10. Never worried about the temptation. You just have to know your misses and trust what you've done many times before!!! Turned 69 a week ago and never had a hybrid. Just picked up a couple from Maltby [clearance items of course lol] and put them together. Will hit the range with them Monday with a couple lefties to try out also. We shall see!!! F&G's

  11. I put my Calaway Strata 4 hybrid from my old set into my new bag Tony. It’s a good option off the tee especially if the mini driver or 3 wood are having a giggle😀

  12. I used to love my 5, 6, & 7 hybrids, but I've lost confidence in hitting full shots with them. I now only carry the 34° 7h for shots in the rough around the green (chipping with a putting stroke). Other than that "specialty" club, my bag goes from 7w to 6 iron. Depending on how tight the approach into the green is, much of the time from 180-200+ I'll do like you and split the difference by hitting 6 iron & then wedge. From driver to 54° wedge, I generally carry less than 14 clubs; sometimes as few as 10.

  13. Good answer, Tony. After a lot of practice, trial, and error I have developed the top end of my bag to include clubs with which I’m most confident and comfortable, and still meet the distance gaps – Driver (190-200 @70% fairways), 5-wood (170-185 from good fairway lie @ 75% in play), and 21* 4-hybrid (155-165 from fairway or light rough @ 85-90% in play). As you said, I will make a risk-reward calculation on whether I can get safely on the green with one approach shot or a layup and chip. Old man golf!

  14. I do the ol choke down knock down driver. Fairway woods work really well easier too launch, but hybrids work better in my opinion for sweepers. But yardage Gap and purpose should be the main prioy

  15. My longest club after driver is a 19° hybrid set to 17°..love it! With my best strike, it can carry 250. But even when not stepping on it, it's a smooth 230 club, and that's plenty enough..Thought about a 3 wood, but its exactly as you say, when do you accually need it, and when you do, is your rellation with Mrs Jabroni good enough to face the consequences!?😅

  16. Thanks boss.. I needed this one. I have been focusing on driver lately, but my course is tight so I have been mixing 5w with driver off the tee. I've been struggling with consistent misses – aka really not knowing where my misses are going to be. I need to dumb it down, focus on the driver (because that's what I want to be good at) – know my misses. When it's too tight for driver I need to bite the bullet and hit my 5i off the tee

  17. I hit my 23 degree 5i from the turf pretty well 9 out of 10 times. So, I tried a 23 degree hybrid. It did give me an extra 15 yards, when I hit it well. Which was about 50% of the time. The inconsistency was not worth it to me. I do use a 20 degree hybrid but I only use it from a tee.

  18. Thanks Tony for more sound advice! It’s what I appreciate about your channel. Honest answers, no sales pitch to get the latest and greatest miracle product, just straight, no BS info. Thank you for being a beacon in the dark swamp of golf content!

  19. If I decided to cut down all my clubs as you did do you have a link to your decision process? I love the idea of more consistent results and better dispersion. I cut my driver down 2.5 inches and having much better accuracy.

  20. Don't agree , particurlarly if you are a one digit player – Hybrid is absolutely reliable – Concerning fairway wood 3 or 5 , there is a variety of models and brands, the major difficulty is to find which one is good for you , but as your goal is to reach the par 5 in 2 , you need one – I agree with you at some degree pn the shaft lenghts, but not at your extend …. Round 44'' is good for the smaller guy , but when you are towering at 6'3 and above a 45,5"" shaft appears nearly small

  21. I have a body beat totally to hell and back. I have good days, I have bad days.

When I'm feeling pretty good, woods all the way. I couldn't hit the ball with a hybrid if I threw the whole bag at it. When I'm feeling pretty beat to hell its the other way around. Hybrids suddenly sing, woods are suddenly cursed.

It is a pain, but I'm rebuilding my bag, and I haven't been able to avoid a bag-and-a-half. I'm fortunate the irons and wedges at the moment behave regardless of condition, but I'm really doubling up from there.

It would suck… but… double the shiney stuff!
