Ryan Fox (New Zealand), who won the men’s golf major tournament The Open this year, showed off his top skills from the first day of the DP World Tour Genesis Championship.
Fox tied five birdies and two bogeys for a 3-under 68 in the first round of the tournament held at Woojeong Hills Country Club in Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province on the 22nd. Fox, who saved three shots on the first day, started the race for the championship by ranking at the top.
It is the first time in 11 years that Fox has visited Korea since the 2015 GS Caltex Maekyung Open. He had a good relationship with a domestic golf course by winning the runner-up prize at the time, but he got off to a good start in this tournament as well.
Fox, who played in the same group with Lim Sung-jae and Eugenio Chakara of Spain, failed to reduce the number of pars in the first nine holes. However, the mood changed in the second half. After birdieing at the 6th hole, he made consecutive birdies at the 8th and 9th holes to finish the game at 3 under par.
Fox, who turned professional in 2011, qualified for the DP World Tour in 2017 after going through the Australian Professional Golf Tour and the Asian Tour. After winning his first championship in 2019, he added two wins in 2022 and one win in 2023, establishing himself as a top player. Since then, he has advanced to the PGA Tour and is playing with the DP World Tour. Fox, who is currently ranked sixth in the Race to Dubai rankings, is aiming to win six DP World Tour titles. Lim Sung-jae, who played with Fox in the round, finished the first day with an even-par 71. The tee shot and iron shot were relatively stable, but the putt was disappointing. Lim Sung-jae, who rarely took advantage of his chances on the green, failed to reduce the number of pars by only catching two birdies.
