Poverty Bay
Marton couple Michael and Gaylene Jones weren’t thinking about winning when they played in the Eagles Charity Golf Tournament on Saturday.
As members of the Manawatū/Wanganui Eagles Society, they attended as guests of the Gisborne branch only to end up starring at prizegiving.
Gaylene won the women’s Stableford with 106-37-69, for 41 points, while Mike – secretary of Manawatū/Wanganui Eagles and a life member of the Eagles Golfing Society of NZ – was second (behind Poverty Bay member Michael Smith, 40pts) in the men’s Stableford with 98-30-68, for 40.
Mike put their success down to the storm that smashed his club in February, bringing down over 500 trees. The course had become a lot tougher and subsequently handicaps had gone up.
Tairāwhiti masters representative Tony Akroyd won the men’s gross with 2-over 74 and Michael Smith topped the men’s Stableford with 94-26-68, for 40.
Poverty Bay senior women’s club champion Rochelle Cooper won the women’s gross with 90 – a round that featured two twos, one of those a near hole-in-one on the 11th, and a sextuple bogey 10 on the 18th after bunker issues.
Winners of the Bob Grierson Memorial teams’ Stableford at the Eagles Charity Golf Tournament held at the Poverty Bay course on Sunday are (from left) Russell Moylan, Richard Searle, Matt Skuse and George Searle, with Gisborne Eagles Society president Peter Hakiwai. The tournament also features the Bob Grierson Memorial teams’ aggregate Stableford in honour of the former NZ Eagles secretary and life member (1974-1984). The Gisborne winners were Russell Moylan (38pts), Matt Skuse (36), George Searle (34) and Richard Searle (38) with a 146 total.
All proceeds from the annual Eagles tournament go to the Halberg Disability Sport Foundation to be used locally. The foundation was represented at the tournament by regional adviser Lawrence Wilkinson.
Last year’s event raised $1600. This year’s amount was still to be confirmed.
Lindsay Hunt proved his 91-26-65 the previous weekend was no fluke by doing it again on Sunday.
Hunt equalled his best 18 and nine-hole scores in winning the Division 2 Stableford with 42 points, his round featuring a sensational 41 for 26 points on the back nine (he started on the 10th hole).

Pātūtahi
Zach Norris may have made history on Sunday.
Norris not only won the Division 2 men’s gross with what was surely a personal-best 76 off a 13-handicap, he bettered the Division 1 winner.
With the Tahi’s big guns either playing in Ōpōtiki or absent from Sunday’s club day, Lyall Anania’s 77 was good enough to win Division 1, although it was Norris’ feat that stood out.
Charlie Holland followed up her women’s shootout final triumph by winning the women’s net with 99-29-70, dipping under 100 for the first time since late March.
