Disc Golf Beginner Clinic And Tournament Raises Funds For Local Zoo

ATTLEBORO, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — It’s like golf, but without the golf balls, clubs or tees.

Jewelry City Disc Golf — a golf course for denser, flying discs similar to frisbees — has sat inside Attleboro’s Highland Park for a little over a year, and beginners will be able to take a stab at the airborne golf dupe on Oct. 18.

“You’re taking an object, and you’re trying to get it in another object in as few throws, hits, swings, whatever as possible,” Jewelry City Disc Golf President Spencer Lynds explained. “Just imagine like a pizza chef, cooking in the kitchen; he’s throwing it up in the air and twisting his wrist flat, and that’s what you want to do. Just forward at the basket.”

Instead of holes, 18 baskets are sprawled throughout the over 6,000-foot course.

“This course is a par 60,” Lynds said. “We have one par five, and then I think four par fours and then the rest are par threes.”

The “Birdies for Beasties” event on the 18th will support the Friends of Capron Park Zoo fund. Along with the beginner clinic is a doubles tournament during the last half of the event.

“Just the ability to be out in nature and there’s so much variability in courses, that they’re all sort of so unique in their own way, and then the community that’s around each course,” Lynd said.

The clinic and tournament run from 8:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Highland Park.
