A golf course known as “one of the finest in Devon” will shut its doors due to the “increasingly difficult economic climate”.

Chulmleigh Golf Course in Mid Devon will have their last day of trading on October 31 after owners made the “difficult decision” to close after nearly 14 years of running the site.

The announcement was made on October 9 2026 via social media.

The statement read: “We don’t really know where to begin, but after a lot of thought and consideration, we’ve made the difficult decision, after nearly 14 years of running Chulmleigh Golf Course, that it’s time to close the doors for now.

“As most of you are aware we have been trying to sell the business for the last 3 years without success. The reality is that running a business in the current economic climate has become increasingly difficult.”

DevonLive reported back in 2023 that the golf course and clubhouse was put on the market for £900,000.

The course and club house, described as “one of the finest 18-hole courses in Devon” on its website, is located in the centre of Chulmleigh and overlooks Dartmoor in the distance.

The family-owned and operated course encouraged all players regardless of experience and offered reduced rates for players under 16-years-old.

Owners of the club concluded the statement by thanking staff and family who have “worked with them over the years”.

They wrote: “We have had some great times over the years and made some good friends. When we arrived, our boys were only young and have grown up amongst you all, as the saying goes it takes a village to raise a child in our case it took a golf course.

“Our last day of trading will be Saturday 31st October and to mark the occasion we will be holding a leaving drinks party where we look forward to seeing as many of you as possible.”
