LIV Golf appear to have been dealt a further blow, with Cam Smith apparently requesting his release from his contract as the Australian seemingly looks set to head through the exit door.
This period of the year was going to be tense for those at LIV following the decision to file for bankruptcy in September.
While it was a necessary step after the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia decided to stop funding LIV Golf, filing for bankruptcy has opened the door for every player to consider their future with the league.
Cam Smith formally requests release from his LIV Golf contract
Jon Rahm has confirmed his plans to leave LIV Golf. The incoming investors have now got to be concerned about Rahm’s impending departure sparking a mass exodus.
How costly has Jon Rahm’s decision to join LIV Golf been for his career?
His lawyer has announced he will not be involved with LIV 2.0
And according to Golf Digest, Cam Smith has now formally requested his release from his contract during the hearings.
For their part, LIV have asked for time to review the Australian’s request.
What Cam Smith said about his LIV Golf future in August
Smith may have had a difficult couple of years on the course but it really says a lot if he has decided that he wants to leave LIV ahead of the 2027 season.
Speaking in August, Smith said – in comments reported by the Guardian – that he was desperate for LIV to work having enjoyed his time with the league. He noted that he would happily return to the PGA Tour if it ‘was the only option’.
From the outside, Smith seemed incredibly happy with the lifestyle. He got to spend more time at home in Australia, while his Ripper team was made up of his countrymen.
So it is telling that he has now requested his release within a couple of months of those comments.
Of course, the big question now concerns what happens next for LIV. If Rahm and Smith leave, the league will have lost the majority of its star power.
LIV struggled to make an impact after spending billions on the project. With the PIF gone, and several of their marquee names looking set to follow, it is incredibly difficult to see how BC Partners stand any chance of making the league a success.
