CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. (October 6, 2026) — With the morning wave complete in the 20th MGA Mid-Amateur Championship, Christian Cavaliere set the morning pace at his home club, firing a 2-under 68 at Hudson National Golf Club.

Cavaliere, 28, rolled in four birdies while also having a double bogey on the card to earn a one-shot edge over Jason Bataille of Raritan Valley who tallied a 1-under 69. Eric LeFante of Somerset Hills added an even-par round of 70 in the morning, while two-time champion Trevor Randolph of Arcola began his round with a hole-out eagle on the par-4 10th en route to a 1-over 71 alongside Stephen Walsh of Baltusrol and Adam Fuchs of Echo Lake.

The afternoon wave – which includes five past champions – is on the course.

Hudson National has proven itself as one of the strongest championship layouts in the Met Area and has welcomed two Met Opens (2004, Rick Hartmann; 2021, Andrew Svoboda), two Met Amateurs (2001, Johnson Wagner; 2019, Chris Gotterup) and now plays host to its second Mid-Amateur (2007, Mike Reardon).

The Tom Fazio design that opened in 1996 underwent a Fazio Design renovation that debuted in 2024 with updates focused on modern hitting distances. Many fairway bunkers were relocated and rebuilt, while every green was also rebuilt and re-grassed, with some greens getting redesigned and reshaped to create new hole locations. Several holes also received new back tees. The layout will no doubt test the region’s top players and provide an outstanding backdrop for the 20th MGA Mid-Amateur.

The MGA’s final multi-day championship of the season welcomes the region’s top players ages 25 and above to compete for the Westmoreland Cup, named for longtime MGA Tournament Director Gene Westmoreland who was instrumental in launching the championship and has a great passion for the mid-amateur game. Players earn the highly sought-after invitation based on finishes in MGA and other Met Area events. Recent editions have taken place at Country Club of Fairfield, Manasquan River, and Laurel Links, with Hudson National serving as just the second club to host twice (Bayonne: 2008, 2017).
