If there was an award for participation, Dave Pirimona would have got it in the Primo Cup for 2026.
As it was, he won the big one anyway.
Pirimona and Marg Colebourne were the overall winners on finals day of the Primo Cup for which players qualify through points collated over various club events.
Pirimona’s victory in the men’s final was perhaps fitting. He was the only player to compete in all eight qualifiers and stepped up when it counted to win on countback from Simon Jeune.
The format for the final is front-nine net minus back-nine Stableford.
Pirimona, off a 12-handicap, carded 37-22-15 while Jeune, off scratch, returned 33-18-15.
Colebourne has an impressive record in Primo Cup finals and added to that in winning the women’s title with 35-18-17 from Miggles Shanks (40-22-18).
Finals day also featured a hidden partners combined Stableford. Jeune and Sally Spence won with 75 from Neville West and Nigel Jones (74) and Brad Morgan and Colebourne (74).
Murray Smith’s 42 points was the best individual Stableford of the day – he was not a Primo Cup finalist – but his drawn partner only had 29.

Junior reps
Tairāwhiti did it tough at the junior boys’ interprovincial tournament on the Cambridge course in Waikato last week.
But the seven-strong team had their moment, and gained hugely valuable experience against some of the country’s rising stars.
The Tairāwhiti team were Marcus Gray, Makau Phipps, Watene Brown, Jordyn Haley, Kymani Tamatea, Rua Ratima and Joel Kirkpatrick.
They had a demanding seven team matchplay clashes over five days, opening the tournament with a 4½-1½ loss to Aorangi-Southland, then losing 6-0 to Auckland, Wellington, Taranaki, Bay of Plenty and Waikato.
They ended with a 4½-1½ loss to Manawatu-Wanganui.
Tamatea, at No 5 in the team, won 2 and 1 against Aorangi-Southland while No 1 Gray halved.
Jordyn Haley, in his first representative outing, won 2 and 1 against Man-Wang. Rua Ratima, at just 10 years old and trailing 2-down after nine holes, had a half.
Despite the team results, there were several close encounters without scoreboard reward. Every match against Taranaki went to the 15th hole or further.
Tairāwhiti Masters
A blast from the past is a feature of the Tairāwhiti squad named for the Freyberg Masters men’s interprovincial in Napier next month.
Christchurch-based Tony Boon, who started his golf at Te Puia Hot Springs as a junior under the tutelage of East Coast legend Peter Rouse, has been named in the six-man team for the over-40s matchplay tournament.
The rest of the team are 2024 Poverty Bay Golf Club senior men’s club champion and Ōpōtiki-based Rob Maruszewski, Auckland-based David Solomann, Matt Henwood, Craig Palmer and Tony Akroyd, who will captain the squad. Peter Hakiwai is manager.
A notable absence is Anaru Reedy, a long-time Tairāwhiti team anchor, who had six wins from his eight matches as they finished 14th out of the 15 provinces last year. Reedy is unavailable.
