Surrey-area kids wrapped up a series of weekly golf lessons at Surrey Golf Club on Sunday, Oct. 4.
In Surrey for the first time, the RBC Community Junior Golf / First Tee clinic involved 24 players aged seven to 13 who learned the game from coach Mark Nyffenegger, in two sessions divided by age.
Surrey Golf Club was new to the initiative this year, joining five other courses across B.C. to deliver RBC Community Junior Golf in partnership with Golf Canada. The others are Cedar Hill and Highland Pacific Golf in Victoria, Glacier Greens in Comox, and Fraserview and Queen Elizabeth Park Pitch and Putt in Vancouver. Pre-registration for next spring is done on golfcanada.ca/rbc-community-junior-golf.
With no fees for participants, it’s all about introducing young people to the game of golf “through fun, inclusive instruction designed to build confidence, develop new skills, and create positive experiences in sport,” the website says.
Since 2021, RBC Community Junior Golf has engaged more than 100,000 youth through free First Tee programming, with 38 golf courses now participating across Canada.
Elsewhere in Surrey, 53 young golfers from around the Lower Mainland gathered Sept. 4 at The BackYard Golf’s Clayton Hills Par 3 Golf Course for the inaugural First Tee – British Columbia end-of-summer tournament, “celebrating a season of learning, development and fun on the golf course,” according to a post on firstteecanada.ca.
The nine-hole tournament “is a great way for our participants to apply what they’ve learned in their First Tee lessons to an actual round on the golf course,” said Scott Stefani, program manager with First Tee – British Columbia. “It gives them the opportunity to play, learn and have fun with their families, while showing them that golf can be a sport where they belong and continue to grow.”
