Country Club of NC in Pinehurst Hires Architech for Cardinal Course Revamp

The Country Club of North Carolina in Pinehurst picked Andrew Green to redesign its Cardinal Course. Work starts in fall 2028. The course will reopen in fall 2029. Green teams up with McDonald & Sons Golf Course Builders.

“With the plan approved, our attention now turns to the details and execution of the Cardinal project,” Green said in a statement, according to the Sandhills Sentinel. “We are working closely with the Club and project team to refine the design, establish the construction sequence, and coordinate the many pieces necessary to move the project forward successfully.”

Green worked 12 years with McDonald & Sons before starting his own company. They’ve collaborated on numerous assignments since then, building a track record that spans multiple states and various types of courses.

“There is still important design work ahead,” Green added in the statement. “As we move toward construction, we will continue to study each hole, test ideas, and refine details to make sure we are getting the most out of the property and the plan.”

The Cardinal Course started as nine holes in 1970. Willard Byrd drew up those first fairways. Robert Trent Jones Sr. added nine more in 1981. Arthur Hills handled the last makeover back in 2001.

Andrew Green has reworked several courses that hosted Major championships, according to the Sandhills Sentinel. Congressional Country Club’s Blue Course got his touch in 2022. Oak Hill Country Club’s East Course followed in 2021. He tackled Inverness Club in 2020, then Scioto Country Club in 2022. Wannamoisett Country Club came that same year, and East Lake Golf Club in 2023. Golf Digest gave him Renovation of the Year awards for Interlachen Country Club in 2024 and Chevy Chase Club in 2025.

He’s building two new courses from scratch. Firefly sits in Spring Hill, Tennessee, opening fall 2026. Kawonu Golf Club in Greenville, South Carolina, opens spring 2027.

“Andrew Green’s work is undoubtedly successful and eye-opening,” said club president Charlie Rivers, according to the Sandhills Sentinel. “His vision for the future of the Cardinal Course at CCNC is equally innovative. The membership is enthusiastic about watching this project come to life.”
