I have ping i530, 61 yo, and just play the 8 where I with my old irons used to play the 7.
well now here's the thing. My Golf Journey Started in June 2023 and I bought a set of Like New but Used Mizuno 919 Hot Metals. I knew nothing about clubs or shafts or weights or Lofts but i was hitting my 7 iron…………200 yards plus up to 30yd roll out. BS I hear you all cry. Well, stick with me.
I love Mizuno, the name, the brand the philosophy and of course, Japanese Steel. But the hot Metal were exactly that. Hot. The face was so reactive that even my misses were going 200, but 50yd left or right………They had almost no spin so ultimately no control. I could launch them in the air but couldn't stop them on the greens. but after using them for about 6 months (I loved them btw) I found a like new Mizuno 919 Tour with a 105g Stiff shaft. It was like holding up excalibur. It was light and perfectly balanced. So i bought it for 20 quid and took it to the range.
Buttery smooth and quiet as it was I was only hitting it about 170. at this point I still didn't know about jacked lofts, cavity back or whatever…………so i started Over swinging, looking for that 30yd loss from my 919 Hot Metals. And this is where my entire game went wrong.
I developed an overly aggressive swing. Massive out to In chasing the lost yardage. I started thinning and fatting 6 inches before the ball, all weight left on the right left. I started scooping it and lost the ability to compress and ultimately ended up with a few injuries that brought my season to an early finish.
So here I am 3 years later. MY swing is still broken, especially with my Driver. Currently 23.5 hc up here in County Durham. I'm starting from scratch. From the grip all the way to my shoes.
So here' the thing. 95% only hit their 7 iron 150, you say? then put me in the 5% that hits it over 170 using Mizuno 921 Forged with Modus 3 120 stiff. I can, but rarely do, swing up to 95mph with a 7 iron, but these days I settle around 85-90. As I find my compression once again the old ways are coming back and I've let go of the brute force Grunt of that over swing.
Great content. Cheers.
140 to 150 but play ping i500s but set made for me to traditional lofts 34.5 degree 7 iron
Great vid, have forwarded the link to many of my colleagues and clients here in Australia. I have been building golf clubs since the days we hand carved nylon inserts and screwed them into persimmon blocks, before final filing, and refinishing.
I have explained this many times to clients I have built sets for who have become jaded with fitting centers who are all driven by distance and spin rates. I have found greater improvements for my clients using performance heads and fine tuning shafts, swing weights and kick points to achieve the best results in each set.
Some of the sets sold these days are also made with very low Quality Control and I have been asked to "blueprint" more than 20 sets in the last 2 years alone for players who have been supplied new products but have had ball dispersion issues with practice sessions caused by most sets having almost 8 different swing weights in a single set of irons.
I have just replaced the shafts in my Miura MC-502 irons from Dynamic Gold Tour Issue S300 shafts to KBS TGI 100 graphite shafts in 4 iron to PW. At 58 years old I was hitting my 7 iron 132-135 meters with the steel shafts. Since replacing all shafts and re-swing weighting all clubs to D3, I am now hitting 7 iron about 140-145 meters 19 out 20 balls.
Another slight consideration I make when building sets with graphite shafts is ensuring the shafts spines are all identically aligned during assembly in the position to suit the expected performance, depending on the players preference for either neutral, draw or fade bias shapes.
I hit by 7 130 yards, and if I need more distance that is what hybrids are for. I think the jacked down lofts on game improvement irons are non productive for most players imho.
If I always hit my 7 iron 130 yards, who cares? I would rather be consistent than longer.
140 to 145. The answer is you should hit it a consistent distance that's less than your 6 and more than your 8 iron.
My gamer set 7i n is 35°. New set that sits in storage, 7i …. 23°….
140 and straight
A comfortable 135-140 pretty consistently
33degree zx7, high launch and stop shot 125-130m. punch. low sting can do 135m -140 depends on how fast the course .
Just turned 40.swing 7i in the low 90s. How far it goes depends on what kind of 7 iron it is 😉
But the person that needs the GI irons will probably suffer more mishits using players irons
PXG irons are just a big fat marketing scam.
170-175 yards.
Those 7 irons look like thin sole tour irons to me, like Ping i3+Blades. My Ping G20 7 iron has a much wider sole. It seems like the iron you are talking about is an 8 iron and they are calling it a 7. If it has way more loft than a standard 7 iron, it's no longer a 7 iron it's an 8. If we are going to start changing lofts willy nilly we are in for a world of confusion.
My 7 iron is between 165 and 185
"How far should you hit your 7-iron?"
What a great question! It's right up there with "How far should you hit your putter?" 😅
Problem is 4 and 5 irons in a game improvement set are nigh on unusable off the turf. They ain't launching nothing at low swing speed because of the low loft. I use a high launch game improvement 5 iron and it's still difficult to use off the turf. I need to be on my game to get the benefit.
My Ping i59 is 34 degree. Depending on the day it Carrie’s 150-160. Played my old Titleiest AP1s the other week at it carried 180.
200 yards
wrong.. 145
