MUSKEGON — Reeths-Puffer’s girls golf team, and its star player Sophia McCollum, both won the Greater Muskegon Athletic Association team and individual championships for the third straight year September 22.
The Rockets as a team shot a 354; defending champion Montague came in second with a 360, just six shots behind the Rockets, and Whitehall finished fourth after shooting 385 as a team.
The 18-hole event was held at Chase Hammond Golf Course in Muskegon.
McCollum of the Rockets won the event by shooting a 78 for her fifth win of 2026-27.
According to Rockets’ Head Coach Matt Pallett, McCollum’s round featured 2 birdies on holes 11 and 16.
Pallett said, “Sophia has had a great career and has cemented as one of the all-time bests.”
“Even with her, it takes a team to win the trophy,” Pallett said. “I am very proud of the team today and their performance.”
Olivia Ambler followed behind McCollum after shooting a 86, good for fifth, and Ella Vorhies finished 10th with a score of 93.
Ambler’s round, Pallett said, was highlighted by birdies on the fifth and 12th holes, and was better than her score from the previous season by six strokes.
Ambler also won an “All-Tournament Team” medal for her efforts.
Voorhies also earned an “All-Tournament Team” medal, and got a birdie on the 11th hole.
Abigail Davis finished 14th with a round of 97, and Kayleigh Brown wound up with a score of 126, putting her in 33rd place.
Pallett said, “Olivia, Ella and Abby played great today to go along with Sophia.”
“When we have four girls playing well, we are going to be tough to beat,” Pallett said.
Montague’s low scorer was Addi Smith, who came in third with a round of 84.
Molly Mulder tied the Rockets’ Ambler for fifth with a round of 86.
Marguerite O’Connell finished 12th after a round of 94; Brynlee Kessler finished 13th with a round of 96, and Callie Peterson finished 29th following her round of 119.
For the Vikings, their low scorer was Riley Shafer, who finished fourth with a round of 85.
Avarie Bentz came up with a 93 to finish in a 10th-place tie with the Rockets’ Voorhies.
Coming in 17th was Kadee Tenbrock, whose 101 put her in 17th.
Kelsie McClure shot an 106 to finish 19th, and Ryleigh Hershey finished 22nd with a round of 112.
Vikings Head Coach Bill Borgman said, ”We shot 385, slightly above our average play.”
“We had two golfers in the Top 10, which is exciting to see,” Borgman said.
“We have two more matches left in the season before regionals,” Borgman said. “We’re looking for a good solid finish to the year.”
Pallett said, “We got off to a great start today and were able to hold off the defending champs (Montague).”
“Coach Kerr (Montague’s Head Girls Golf Coach Phil Kerr) and his team should be proud of the way they kept battling today,” Pallett said. Pallett concluded by saying, “They are a great program and are fun to compete against.”
Kerr said, “We got off to a tough start; our back nine was incredible but just wasn’t enough to make up the ground that we gave up to Reeths-Puffre early on.”
“They played great throughout the lineup and deserved to win,” Kerr said. “Really proud of how my girls fought.”
