Chris Gotterup has suggested that it would be cool if Donald Trump decided to attend the Presidents Cup amid reports of him heading to Medinah this week.
Trump made history during the 2017 Presidents Cup by becoming the first incumbent President of the United States of America to present the winning captain, Steve Stricker, with the trophy. Team USA won 19-11 that week at Liberty National.
Brandt Snedeker may well be hoping that he gets the same opportunity over the coming days, as he looks to become the latest American captain to win the event.
Of course, Donald Trump did make sure to steal the spotlight during the opening day’s play at last year’s Ryder Cup as he attended the afternoon session at Bethpage Black. And it is expected that he will be in Illinois this week for the latest edition of the Presidents Cup.
Chris Gotterup is one of the rookies on Snedeker’s team, with the youngster winning three times on the PGA Tour this season. And speaking to the media ahead of his debut, Gotterup commented on the prospect of Trump being at the event.
“Yeah, I think everyone, you know, whoever the President is, if they care enough to come watch us play golf, that’s pretty cool,” he said.

“So I know we’re excited, and we’re going to go try to put on a good performance for everyone.”
Another rookie, Jacob Bridgeman was also asked about the possibility, and last week’s Biltmore Championship Asheville winner seemed a little bit more excited about the prospect.

“Yeah, I’m assuming hopefully we’ll have a bunch of Presidents out. That would just be amazing to meet them and have them rooting us on, pulling for our country, and it makes it feel even more patriotic,” he said.

It is going to be interesting to see how Gotterup performs on the Presidents Cup stage. He has already shown on a number of occasions during his career that the big moments seem to bring the best out of him.
The question is which player is he going to be paired with. He is incredibly good friends with Bridgeman, while he hails from a similar area to Cameron Young.
And while he admitted that he is a very different player to Young, he suggested that he would be more than happy being sent out with The Players Championship winner.
“Kind of funny, we were talking it about it this week that we never really overlapped in the Met section at all, but it feels like we should have,” he said.
“Yeah, he’s one of the guys that I’ve gotten to know better and play with a bunch in Florida. We work with similar people on our teams and stuff.
“Yeah, we definitely play different, but similarly. It’s kind of funny, like I feel like he does the opposite of what I do, like big high draws, and I’m kind of hard low cuts.
“So I think we make a good potential pairing together.”
This week certainly has the potential to be yet another breakout moment for Gotterup as he represents his country for the very first time.
However, he will know that he is probably going to have to produce something special if he hopes to upstage President Trump.
