ORLANDO, Fla. — Bishop Moore junior golfer Jack Mokris has set multiple school records while helping the Hornets boys golf team win its first team state championship in school history.
Mokris already holds the school record for scoring average in a season at 70.2 and the lowest round on a par-70 course with a round of 62.
During the Titan Invitational this season, he also broke the school record for the lowest round on a par-72 course by shooting a 63.
“It’s one of the ways to prove that I’m one of the best players here,” Mokris said. “It definitely proved that I’m a great player and I can compete against the best of the best.”
Hornets’ head coach Marvin Synder said Bishop Moore has had strong golfers in its history, including professional golfer Sam Ryder.
“For a school as old as we are, we’ve had some good golfers come through,” Synder said. “Sam Ryder graduated from Bishop Moore back in 2008 and his names aren’t in the records books.”
Mokris was the individual runner-up at the state tournament while the Hornets won the team title.
“It was amazing,” Mokris said. “Super grateful to be a part of that team. I was the individual runner-up, which kind of stunk. But I think winning the team championship made up for everything.”
Synder was named the Florida Dairy Farmers coach of the year.
He said Mokris’ individual runner-up finish has become motivation.
“Jack loves to win, he loves to be competitive. But, he’s a good teammate,” Synder said. “I think he grows from failure. Some of his best rounds are after he had a bad round.”
Mokris said he is focused on getting what he called “revenge” this season.
He also manages type 1 diabetes, which he was diagnosed with before starting high school. He said blood sugar changes can affect his play during rounds.
“It’s very stressful because the high or low blood sugar affects my game,” Mokris said. “But having people around is super great and I’m super grateful for it.”
Mokris said he keeps food and glucose tablets with him on the course.
“If I’m not low or high, I’ll have some beef jerky, some protein bars,” Mokris said. “But if I am low, I have some glucose tablets that picks me up real quick.”
