Rory McIlroy has sent a warning to Patrick Reed after cutting his lead in the DP World Tour’s Race to Dubai. McIlroy entered the week almost 1,000 points behind the American but is now within touching distance.
McIlroy fell further behind Reed in the Race to Dubai standings at last week’s Irish Open, finishing tied-41st while Reed was the runner-up to Shane Lowry. However, the gap has closed significantly at the BMW PGA Championship this weekend.
Reed withdrew from the tournament due to injury after a shocking second-round front nine on Friday. Meanwhile, McIlroy carded a four-under-par 68 on Sunday to finish second to J.J. Spaun at Wentworth.

Rory McIlroy targets record eighth Race to Dubai title
Rory McIlroy took advantage of Patrick Reed’s withdrawal from the BMW PGA Championship with a huge points tally in the Race to Dubai. Although the Northern Irishman remains second, he has cut Reed’s lead to just 308 points with several tournaments remaining.
McIlroy has admitted he is “excited” to chase down Reed in the final events of the 2026 DP World Tour season. The reigning Masters champion will play in India and Abu Dhabi before the Tour Championship in Dubai in November.
“Yeah, I’m excited. I have three events until the end of my DP World Tour season,” McIlroy said after the final round at Wentworth. “I’m not sure what Patrick’s schedule looks like coming up, but I feel like I have enough opportunities.
“And I’m going back to the golf course in India that I played at for the first time last year, so I’ll know it a little bit better, and then going to Abu Dhabi and Dubai, where I had a lot of success in my career. Excited for the opportunity, and it would obviously be amazing to match [Colin Montgomerie’s] record.”
Given his success in the Middle East in previous seasons, McIlroy must be considered the favourite to win the Race to Dubai. Having surpassed Seve Ballesteros’s six titles last year, an eighth Race to Dubai crown would see McIlroy equal Colin Montgomerie’s incredible record.
