COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Freshman Trenton Stuart shot a 4-under-par 68 in his collegiate debut Saturday to share the individual lead and help the UC Davis men’s golf team into a tie for third after the opening round of the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational at Eisenhower Golf Club.
The Aggies finished at 3-under 285, tied with Wyoming, Denver and UTEP in the 18-team field. UC Davis enters Sunday’s second round five strokes behind co-leaders Colorado and Utah Valley, which each opened with an 8-under 280.
Stuart is one of six players tied atop the leaderboard on the par-72 Blue Course, joining Utah Valley’s Dylan Winona, Colorado’s Parker Paxton, Wyoming’s Brody Leid, Denver’s Ryder Odem and UC Santa Barbara’s Dylan Ma.
Shaun Nair added a 1-under 71 to sit tied for 20th, while Treed Huang opened with an even-par 72 to share 29th. Ryan Firpo rounded out the Aggies’ counting scores with a 2-over 74, tied for 47th. Curtis Da Silva is tied for 84th after an 80.
In the separate individual tournament on the Silver Course, Cooper Greenwood also posted a 4-under 68 to tie for third. The freshman’s first collegiate round in the 60s left him three strokes behind Colorado’s Gavin Amella, who leads the 26-player field at 7-under 65.
Zhenxian Zhang shot a 2-under 70 to share sixth, and Louis Grizot finished at 1-under 71, tied for eighth. All three Aggies in the individual event finished under par and inside the top eight. Grizot won the Silver Course event last season at 10-under 206.
UC Davis continues play Sunday, Sept. 20, with the second round before the tournament concludes Monday with the final 18 holes.
