With a bunker on one side and water on the other, this par 5 can look intimidating from the tee. Dan Young’s plan was to favor the left side while giving himself enough room for his typical fade to move safely to the right.
Why the left side?
Because that position creates the best angle to play the second shot up the right side, setting up a much better approach into the green.
That’s how you play a par 5 backward. Every shot should create an advantage for the one that follows.
