How far do hickory golf clubs actually go… especially when the irons have NO GROOVES?
I’ve always wondered what sort of distances these old clubs really produce, so today I’m putting them to the test using TrackMan.
We’re going through the hickory set, looking at carry distance, total distance, ball speed and club speed to find out just how much performance golfers were getting from clubs made more than a century ago.
And remember — some of these iron faces are completely smooth. No grooves whatsoever.
The numbers genuinely surprised me.

No Groove Golf Clubs Tested on Trackman
Hi Steve, I enjoyed your video and I thought you might find this handy.
Generally hickory players play with this type of setup:
Brassie 12-15° (42-43 Inches)
Driving Iron – 20-23° (39.5 Inches)
Mid-Iron/2 Iron 26-29° (38.5-39 Inches)
Mashie 37-40° (37.5 Inches)
Mashie Niblick 42-45° (36.5-37 Inches)
Niblick 48- 51° (36-36.5 Inches)
Some Extras to fill some gaps:
Spoon 18-21°
Cleek 18°
Jigger/3-4 Iron 32-34°
You'll probably find that most of your clubs have a flat lie angle by a few degrees compared to the same length modern clubs, so if you have the equipment to check/adjust then it might be worth it as then you'll get more consistent results (Or at least then you know it's one less variable, the biggest being that the shafts all have their own personalities!)
Your Driver / Brassie needs re-glued and the whipping re-done.
The Mashie is an 8 iron with standard non jacked loft.
You might be able to get the lofts of the clubs by using your phone – an i-Phone has an inclinometer for angles. I checked the lofts of my clubs with my phone,
