Play was suspended just minutes after the opening tee shots, with flooded bunkers and heavy rain leading to further delays and more than four hours of lost playing time.
Northern Irishman Tom McKibbin made the most of the limited action, reaching five under par through 13 holes to take a one-shot lead.
Patrick Reed, Paul Waring, Eugenio Chacarra, Luke Donald, Jeff Winther and Matthieu Pavon were also among those in action before the weather intervened.
