Half of the United States Presidents Cup team was determined Sunday with the results of the BMW Championship won by Wyndham Clark, and all six men who will compete at Medinah Country Club near Chicago Sept. 24-27 have competed for America in the event previously.
No surprise that World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler led the US team points list to earn his third consecutive Presidents Cup appearance. He will be joined, in order of points, by Cameron Young, Clark, Sam Burns, Russell Henley and Collin Morikawa. Points were accrued starting with the opening event of the 2025 PGA Tour season.
Clark rose from seventh to third with his third win of the year Sunday, a three-stroke victory over fellow American Patrick Cantlay at Bellerive Country Club. Ben Griffin entered the week at No. 5 in the standings but finished T-44 to fall to No. 8. Morikawa, who tied for fourth at Bellerive, hung onto the sixth spot, while Chris Gotterup, who also tied for fourth, rose one place to seventh in the standings.
“These six players have earned the opportunity to represent the United States, and I couldn’t be prouder to have them on our team,” said US captain Brandt Snedeker. “Scottie continues to set the bar, and Cam, Wyndham, Sam, Russell and Collin have consistently proven themselves against the best in the game. Beyond their talent and experience, they’ve shown they can perform when the pressure is the highest. That’s what makes them such a strong foundation for our team.”
“This week was, one, trying to win, but two, also trying to build momentum, make Presidents Cup,” said Morikawa, who shot four rounds in the 60s at Bellerive, including a final-round 68 to end up at 12-under 268. “Yeah, really happy. Kind of just how I grinded throughout the week.”
Following this week’s Tour Championship, Snedeker and International captain Geoff Ogilvy will make their six captain’s picks at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1.
The International team’s six automatic berths, determined by world ranking, won’t be finalised until after the Tour Championship, but it’s highly unlikely much will change. The half-dozen who have the inside track to Medinah are, in order, Si Woo Kim, British Open champion Ryan Fox, Hideki Matsuyama, Min Woo Lee, Tom Kim and Adam Scott, who at age 46 would be making his 12th appearance.
None of the next nine players—including Corey Conners, Nico Echavarria, Sungjae Im and Jason Day who round out the top 10—are in the Tour Championship field at East Lake in Atlanta.
“It’s super satisfying if that should happen,” Scott said after finishing T-15 at Bellerive. “One, to be on the team in any form is really satisfying. To qualify would be pleasing. I won’t owe Geoff [Ogilvy, the International captain] a drink for a pick, but I really want to qualify on my own. It’s a shame it’s going that way, but one of these days someone’s going to weigh whether they should pick me or not. I don’t want to put anyone in that position. So I’m happy that I’ve played well generally this season.”
