I Couldn’t Give Him What He Deserved…
He gave up his first tournament ever to caddie for a total stranger. I promised him more money than he’d have made playing — then spent the next 18 holes trying not to let him down.
With less than an hour until my tee time, I walked up to guys warming up for their own pro-am and asked if any of them wanted to drop out and caddie for me instead. My rules: I make par, you get $50. Birdie, $150. Bogey costs you $25. First guy said no. Then I met Max — 23, scratch golfer, playing in his very first tournament ever — and he said yes.
I was in the middle of a swing change. Striping the ball, but pulling almost everything left, all day. I didn’t make a single birdie the entire round, and Max never once made me feel bad about it. So on 18, with everything on the line, I gave him one last putt with everything I had left.
Was it my best round? Not even close. Did he deserve every dollar? Absolutely.
