Area golf courses were busy over the weekend as they hosted the Grand Slam Amateur of Golf Tournament which was presented by First National Bank of Coleraine.
More than 440 golfers filled Wendigo, Sugarbrooke, Pokegama and Eagle Ridge Golf Courses for the Grand Slam of Golf. The Grand Slam of Golf is one of the largest amateur tournaments in the state of Minnesota as it uses four golf courses in Grand Rapids and the surrounding areas.
Golfers came from far and wide to golf 18-holes that featured three different formats at three of the four courses on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday afternoon.
The tournament went down to the wire and then some. Clint Cornell and Arie DeGrio defeated Gary DeGrio and Jeff Nielsen in a sudden death playoff that went three holes. Cornell and DeGrio finished the tournament with a three-day total of 200.
The women’s portion of the event was won by Kimbra Kosak and Kaley Kosak as they held of Leah Grozdanich and Jan Maki by two strokes on the final day. Kimbra and Kaley Kosak combined to shoot 216 to pick up the win.
Competitors appreciated the work of Tournament Director Brad Gallop and First National Bank of Coleraine’s Mark White, who helped bring the tournament to the area.
