A golf club’s unusual act of kindness gives teen caddie a life-changing tip

At 14, Daniella Penaloza lost her father and her love of golf. At 17, an unusual act of kindness turned a caddying job at Old Barnwell into a $125,000 tip.

Old Barnwell’s caddies are kids from Aiken, South Carolina. One of them is Daniella Penaloza, who lost her father in 2022, put down her clubs, and found her way back to golf carrying other people’s bags. This spring she stood in front of a room of golf bigwigs and answered the question that had followed her for four years: how are you going to pay for college? This is the story of how the lowest-ranking employee at a private golf club became one of its most indispensable people โ€” and how that club used an uncommon act of kindness to deliver her a $125,000 tip.

  1. Amazing story and definitely had me tearing up! especially knowing there are many wonderful kids across this country experiencing. this is what I think of when i hear "grow the game"…using golf as a tool to help others, helping people that otherwise could not be involved in golf get involved, and passing on lessons for life!

  2. I worked at Old Barnwell as a starter for the first two years and the way you explain Nick is so true. Heโ€™s a hell of a person and runs the most amazing concept at Old Barnwell.

  3. This truly is an amazing story and Iโ€™d be lying if I said I did not cry a bit. Listening to this young woman speak makes me confident that they chose the right person for one of those scholarships. She will definitely touch so many more peopleโ€™s lives and Iโ€™m sure in an amazing way! Congratulations and good luck!!
