First time walking a course

And now I get why people do it, pace of play was pretty solid. 10k steps on this 9 hole course.

  1. Feels like people forget walking in general exists.

I take the bus to my new job now, no transfers just a 2-3 min walk to each stop, about 10-15 longer than driving myself. Also started walking to a new gym nearby. And of course, walking 9 hole courses.

Genuinely feels so mentally relaxing when you take a second to reel everything in and really feel the environment, wherever it may be.

Apart from golf, people really need to learn to walk more.

  2. Walking courses that were designed to be walked is a pleasure. Walking courses that were built for carts is a slog. Unfortunately, too many courses built in the last 30 years feature massive gaps between holes. There’s one nearby that has multiple gaps of over 400 yards between green and next tee box. Hopefully course architecture goes back to more walkable designs. I doubt it will, however.

  3. For a second I thought you were a guy in a wheelchair walking the course anyway and I was like, damn son…

  4. That looks like some nice grass. We used to play barefoot on some of the nicer courses when I was a kid, it was awesome. Glad you enjoyed the walk.

  5. Walking courses is the best. Dave Stockton has a whole thing on it, how you pay more attention to the course, walk past irrigation drainages and know that’s where greens will slope to et cetera. Also people complain about the cost of golf but if you walk on a weekday it’s often a really good deal

  6. I just had heart surgery earlier this year, and for the first time in over 6 years I can walk 18 again.

I do it everytime now and my score is better when I do, too.

  7. The game is really meant to be played walking. Gives you time to actually remove yourself from the result of the previous shot, whether bad or good. Keeps you loose and warm as well. I find that my back is less sore after walking 18. I wish golf carts weren’t the norm in the U.S.

  8. Is this an American thing? I’m in the UK and they’re predominantly used as a disability aide.

Admittedly in condition where buggies can damage the course you even need to show a doctors note/blue badge to be given one.

To be fair, UK hadn’t built many new courses so maybe that’s why we don’t use them so much, the courses were all designed to be walked

  9. All those who have the physical capacity to do so should always walk the golf course with a push cart and never drive a power cart.

It’s not just for the priceless exercise and calories burned, but it’s also a huge part of the mental and physical challenge of playing a round of golf, especially in hot, sweltering weather.

Some players prefer to carry their clubs for the entire round, which is fine if they feel strong enough to do so.

But anything less than walking the golf course should be frowned upon.

    Next.

  10. I always walk unless its a work thing and a cart is provided. I was down in Simi Valley a couple weeks ago on vacation and walked a course there with a rental push cart like that. It was super nice and made for very easy walking. First time I’ve ever seen a cart like that.
