Feel like I’m coming over the top too much still

I’ve been an on-off golfer for the better part of 25 years, never playing consistently and never taking a lesson. Got taught by my dad who was also a pretty terrible golfer.

I’m a 16.5 hcp and am starting to seriously work on my swing for the first time in my life. Until recently I was all arms. Admittedly still a lot of arms but I’m getting better. I’ve always had a slice and got the impression it was because I was coming over the top which tracks given I would also pull shots occasionally I assume when I closed my club face too much. What can I do to remedy this? Any good drills recommended based on my swing? When I try to drop my trail arm on the downswing I start to top/thin the ball like crazy and it ends up slicing more!

  1. Yes a good amount OTT. You can see on your second shot your face is also closed. Slow your swing down and feel your hands go into your right hip pocket prior to swinging through

  2. You’ve got a bit of chicken wing going on with your right arm.

Grab a headcover, tuck it under your right armpit, and swing. Don’t let the headcover drop.

  3. Best easy thing that helped me was to imagine the contact point of your ball as 6 o’clock. Really focus on trying to hit through the ball from 7:00 to 1:00 instead of 6:00 to 12:00

  4. One thing that really helped was feeling like the lower body and the upper body are disconnected. When you swing your hips turn at the same rate as your torso.

Get the feeling of firing your hips from the top of your swing while keeping your back to the target as long as possible – then let the momentum lead your torso rotation and swing.

I avoid dropping the trail arm and instead focus on feeling the club coming down at a 45 degree angle, which relies less on getting perfect timing

  5. Massively OTT.

Feel like your back stays facing the target and you pull the club down behind you as your hips swing forward and open. Head stays back.

That will give you a decent feel for how you should be swinging the club.

A drill you can try is setup with the strongest grip you can (or keep a normal grip with the face shut like 25 degrees) and do some slow motion swings thinking about how you would need to move in order to get the face square at impact. I bet it’ll feel totally different.

  6. The single swing thought that fixed this for me was to bring my hands towards the target, not the club face. IDK if it helps you but it helped me a while back.

  7. You’re all arms. Turn your hips back more in the back swing. You’re not getting and lag. Follow through looks good. Just turn more on your backswing
