The Different Paths To The PGA Tour

The Different Paths To The PGA Tour

The Paths to the PGA Tour

There are 3 main ways to get on the PGA Tour:

1️⃣ top 9 at Q school for PGA Tour Americas (only winner gets ALL starts guaranteed)

➡️ top 10 on season long money list there which gets you a Korn Ferry Tour card for next year

➡️ top 20 on season long KFT money list which gets you a PGA Tour card for next year (some starts, not necessarily ALL starts)

*minimum time to achieve this: 2 years
*average time to achieve this: 5-10 years
*minimum expense to achieve this: $250,000
*average handicap needed: +5 or more

2️⃣ top 6 at Korn Ferry Tour Q School after all 4 stages

➡️ top 20 on season long KFT money list which gets you a PGA Tour card for next year (some starts, not necessarily ALL starts)

*minimum time to achieve this: 1 year
*average time to achieve this: 5+ years
*minimum expense to achieve this: $125k
*average handicap needed: +6 or more

3️⃣ Monday qualifiers (PGA or Korn Ferry Tour)

Technically, you could play two rounds of golf (pre qual and Monday q) and find yourself in a PGA Tour event 3 days later. Most weeks they give out 4 spots to Monday qualifiers, but they are eliminating Mondays quals from many PGA events next year.

The average winning score of a PGA Monday Q is 64.7 and the average score of the last qualifier is 66.4, and these are played on extremely difficult courses oftentimes playing against current PGA Tour cardholder who just aren’t ranked inside the top 125 currently.

The average PGA Tour Monday qualifier makes the cut in the event 24% of the time, and to actually earn yourself a spot in the following weeks event you need to finish in the top 10 (I think but don’t quote me, I can’t find this info anywhere but I remember hearing this somewhere before)

*minimum time to acheive this: 1 week
*minimum cost to acheive this: $1k
*average handicap needed: +8 or more

Ranking the likelihood of earning a PGA Tour card thru these 3 routes (from most to least likely)

1️⃣ PGA Tour Americas — Korn Ferry Tour — PGA Tour

2️⃣ Korn Ferry Tour — PGA Tour

3️⃣ Monday Qualifier — Top 10 — PGA Tour

Hope this helps!

  1. Great insight!!! Never EVER realized how tough a road it is to ultimately get to the tour! Hopefully you get the opportunity and make it! Would love to see your name in a PGA field someday!!!

  2. At my club the caddy master has played a few pga events. No cuts made. He was on the nation wide for a few years during those pga events. I can’t imagine how difficult that that competition is.

  3. Just watched a couple of your videos and they were an extremely helpful. Gave me a clear mental and visual idea of what this process will look like for me. I am far from a scratch golfer currently, but this showed me the long road to the PGA Tour and the hard work ahead. Thank you

  4. Midway into your vid, I was thinking “this guy should create his own tour”, the kft/pga tour ceiling naturally limits players financially. It’s almost a casino like model. 63.5/64.7 is wild. Best of luck man.

  5. I read on Golfweek that the PGA Tour Champions has discontinued Q School for 2026. That is so lame and disappointing. That took away alot of 30 and 40 year olds' dreams of turning pro at age 50. Not everyone picked up golf at age 6-7.

  6. Really good breakdown. What i dont understand is, when you watch a pga tour event, the lowest scores that dont make the cut are always well over par, so how did those guys get on the tour, when they would have had to get well under par every week through Americas tour and korn ferry tour?

  7. Let me get this straight – you lose money, but pay tax on your winnings!? How is that fair to pay tax on a $10k win if you spent ~$40k to be there? You've lost money, by any metric. Madness but inspiring you're giving it a crack anyway 👍🏼

  8. just watching the first minute or so I am in shock…I don't play ball golf, I play disc golf as an amateur…and I am stunned that the road to get to the PGA is so freaking long???? you can just get a sponsorship with a disc golf manufacturer and be on tour as early as 18 years old on the Disc Golf Pro Tour…good grief…you could spend the first 10-15 years of your adult life working to play a PGA tour event and never make it…unreal
