Aronimink’s setup team finalized the pin sheet before Scottie Scheffler
and Rory McIlroy knew their tee times. Three weaknesses. Three decisions.
Made before Round One.
John Gosselin, director of agronomy at Aronimink Golf Club, and Kerry
Haigh, PGA of America chief championships officer, locked the setup
framework in March and April — before any favorite touched the property.
The terrace greens averaging eight thousand, two hundred square feet test
approach precision above everything else. Scheffler ranked fortieth in
strokes gained approach this season after three consecutive years at first.
The course was waiting for him.
Rory McIlroy shot sixty-two here at the 2018 BMW Championship. He opened
Thursday’s first round with a seventy-four and five bogeys in his final six
holes. Cameron Young carries the closing power to handle the new
four-hundred-ninety-yard eighteenth, but bentgrass greens mowed and rolled
to championship stimpmeter range expose the one weakness that has followed
him: putting. Golf course superintendent Dave Stofanac and his crew were
executing the setup protocol John Gosselin’s team designed. The Donald Ross
course is asking different questions than the 2018 BMW did. That is the
entire point.
The Golf Course Superintendent’s view of every course is not the view the
broadcast gives you. That’s The Daily Greenskeeper.

Kerry Haigh's team and John Gosselin's team read the pin sheet in a room
together weeks before Round One. The favorites weren't in the room.
Scheffler was first in strokes gained approach for three straight years.
This course was built around approach precision into terrace greens. His
stat slipped before anyone set up this test — so the weakness the course
targets was already there when the tee was dug last fall. Is that a
structurally fairer test than a setup designed to respond to current
form — or is it a harder one?
