Justin Rose: “I’m Not Here to Make Up the Numbers”

Justin Rose returns to TPC Southwind as the defending champion of the FedEx St. Jude Championship—and with no interest in simply extending his PGA TOUR career for the sake of appearances.

Rose says he is not prepared to remain on Tour merely to make up the numbers or wait for the Champions Tour. His motivation is to stay elite, compete in the biggest tournaments and place himself in situations capable of producing lifetime memories.

If he can no longer reach that level, Rose admits he would question why he continues making the sacrifices required to spend so much time away from his family and friends.

For now, that question does not need answering.
Rose remains energised by the challenge and enjoys resisting the normal narrative surrounding a player at this stage of his career:
“I’m enjoying bucking the trend.”
He also returns to Memphis with exceptional memories from the previous year.

Rose closed strongly on Sunday, reached a playoff and adopted an unusually aggressive strategy on the 18th. The hole would not normally be an automatic driver for him, but the wind and conditions convinced Rose to continue attacking. The decision helped deliver a timely victory during the FedExCup postseason.

His 2026 season began impressively.
Rose won the Farmers by seven shots in what he described as one of the most enjoyable and least stressful victories of his career. That result appeared capable of launching a major year.
He then played excellent golf at the Masters—but believes that opportunity escaped him.

Since then, Rose has produced solid performances without finding the sustained run he expected. Three weeks away from competition offered time with his family, a genuine mental reset and enough preparation to return sharp for the final FedExCup push.
TPC Southwind demands a different setup from the links courses Rose had recently been preparing to play.
During links season, he relied more heavily on two-irons and long irons. In Memphis, his attention shifts toward a mini-driver and five-wood, allowing him to maintain useful distance while increasing control from the tee.

Rose considers TPC Southwind a strategic course rather than one that requires overwhelming power. The priority is putting the ball in play and earning the right to become aggressive with the approach.

The Bermuda rough reinforces that strategy.
Rose describes a dramatic contrast between the perfect lies in TPC Southwind’s fairways and the unpredictable, gnarly grass immediately beside them. That missed-fairway penalty is one reason he has placed the mini-driver in the bag.

The fifth hole illustrates the challenge.
Rose says the tee shot offers a window between two bunkers, but players are tempted to cheat the corner and shorten the hole. A miss to the right creates immediate trouble. Even from the fairway in practice, Rose faced approximately 225 yards into the wind and hit a four-iron toward a narrow green—precisely the kind of target that becomes harder as the club gets longer.

The Memphis heat presents another competitive test.
Rose believes preparation must begin before the tournament rounds. Hydration on Tuesday and Wednesday matters because once a player falls behind, recovering during the week becomes difficult.

He is even considering using an umbrella as a parasol. Rose estimated that conditions beneath it felt approximately 20 degrees cooler during his practice round and said it could become particularly useful if temperatures approach 100 degrees over the weekend.
This year’s postseason also feels mentally cleaner because there is no Ryder Cup selection hanging over the players.

Rose says a Ryder Cup year creates additional scrutiny. Players attempting to earn one of the captain’s selections know their form is being monitored, even while telling themselves to focus only on controllable factors.ç

In a non-Ryder Cup year, the objective is simpler:
The FedExCup—and the three tournaments immediately ahead.
