Have you ever wondered how much temperature effects the distance your golf ball travels? Well we have… so we sent Sam De’Ath to the Golf Monthly Performance Lab and armed him with three different types of golf ball, a fridge and an oven to see exactly how a very hot and very cold golf ball compares to one at room temperature!
► What do you think of this test? Will you now think twice about leaving your balls in your car when it’s very hot or cold? Let us know in the comments below! 💬

During winter I chuck my ball under my arm to keep it warm.
Very interesting thank you.
My take away here is that I need to keep my bag, clubs and balls inside the house in winter before going out to play golf.
It’s winter here in Australia and the mornings can be 7 deg C. The grips are cold and stiff and the balls are cold if they have been in the car overnight.
Fortunately by mid morning it’s usually back up to 15-18 C so no worries then.
Also don’t use cheap balls, my ball is the TM Tour Response which is a 3 piece construction but with a softer cover so it definitely is affected by the low temps.
Thanks for the information.
very much correlates to my experience… I've played quite a bit recently with temperatures in the 35 to 40 range and (if you just look at the distance in the air, roll out being maxed out by the dryness) found that the balls were not flying further than usual, actually a tad shorter. That's indeed contrary to what I believed previously.
Humidity is. The biggest killer
The other side being the air is thicker and denser in winter, so balls suffer aerodynamically also, maybe test outside in summer and then again in winter to get overall picture…
Love this 👌 The Winnersh office has never looked so swanky!
Sam’s a machine!
A worthless test. You said “Does cold weather really make your golf ball go shorter” A cold golf ball doesn’t represent weather. Air temperature and moisture content are the bigger factors. Hope this comment isn’t as misleading as your thumbnail title. Annoying! How did you get on with physics at school?
